2/15/2010 Glowing in Tauranga Today we were in Tauranga New Zealand which was our last port before we land in Auckland on Wed. Because of the tides the ship didn’t dock till about 10 and our Waitimo Caves and Kiwi House tour left shortly thereafter. It was about a 2 hr drive thru very scenic country but we did run into some fog and rain during the first hour. It was pouring at the short rest stop we had at a café but we headed in to see if they had cokes anyway and they did. The next stop was at a dairy ranch for lunch. It was a very rustic old house that looked somewhat European with very nice gardens. Lunch included lamb, meatloaf, potatoes and several salad selections. Dessert was homemade icecream with warm ... read more

2/14/2010 Hearts and Flowers in Napier Today we’re in Napier New Zealand. When we first booked our shore excursions last Oct they didn’t have any listed for Napier yet and by the time they did we decided we might like a day without one since there were 6 New Zealand Port days in a row. So we slept in a bit and then headed up to breakfast and to do our daily puzzles. When we returned to the room I found a surprise of a dozen roses waiting for me from John for Valentine’s Day. This was in addition to the lovely heart necklace he’d already given me when we had our Valentines Dinner in the Pinnacle. We then took the shuttle into town and did a bit of shopping at the Opossum Store which had ... read more

10/13/2010 Windswept in Wellington We had an early tour today in Wellington New Zealand. While waiting in the lounge for it to be called we heard someone radio to the Shore Excursion people that the Princess ship was canceling the port. It was strange since we were looking at the ship out the windows. They ran over to watch as it went right by us. Apparently it was too windy for them to get to the dock. Well windy was right as we found out on our way down gangplank. We had to laugh later in the day when we went back and read the paragraph on Wellington in the Daily Program and it said Windy Wellington was the nickname of the town. Our tour was called Wellington Harbor and Storm Coast. The bus headed out ... read more

Fri 2/12/2010 Unprepared for Picton Downpour Today we were in Picton New Zealand. We arrived around 8 but our tour wasn’t scheduled until 1:30 so we spent the morning doing laundry, posting previous blogs, doing the daily suduko, and eating (of course). It appeared to be a nice day and the Daily Program indicated it would be in the 70’s so John decided to wear shorts and we didn’t think we’d need jackets. However, as we were waiting for our tour to be called someone said it’s pouring out there and boy were they right. So he ran down to change and grab an umbrella and my jacket. As we went down the gangplank it was very wet and people were trying to get back on from the morning tours and out for the afternoon ones ... read more

2/11//2010 Chillin’ in Christchurch Today we arrived early in Christchurch New Zealand. We had an early tour so grabbed a quick breakfast in the Lido then headed to the lounge to wait for our bus to be called. The tour was called Christchurch and Canterbury. It was raining and very overcast and a bit chilly. The port is actually the crater from a volcano so to get to Christchurch we had to make our way over the mountain and stopped at a lookout area near the top. I’m sure the views are very nice when the weather is clear but not a lot to see this day. We then headed to Riccarton House which was a farm established in the mid 1800’s by two brothers named Dean from Scotland. The older brother died in a shipwreck ... read more

Wed 2/10/2010 Wild Things in Dunedin Today we were in Dunedin New Zealand which is said to be the most Scottish town outside of Scotland. We took to the “Nature’s Wonders - Wildlife Cruise and Penguins” tour which was a full day one that left just after 8. Note it was rather chilly (about 60) but the boat provided jackets and binoculars for everyone. Along with coffee and very good cookies. It started with a boat cruise thru the harbor and out to ocean to view the many birds including Black Swan, Spotted Shag, Black Bat Gull, Royal Spoonbill, Shutty Shearwater Shag, Southern Albatross, Northern Albatross, and White Capped Albatross. One of the Albatross even landed on the water near the boat for a great photo op. We also saw some chicks in the Royal Albatross ... read more

Tue 10/9/2010 Fun in Fjordland Today was our third sea day in a row but was also the Scenic Cruising day as we sailed thru 3 fiords in New Zealands Fiordland National Park. The day started early as it was recommended we be up at 6:00 to see the start of Milford sound. There were actually almost 100 guests getting off here for a 2 day land tour. We headed up to the Crows Nest to watch the sunrise and the early views of the fiord. As the sailing continued we saw it from outside on Decks 9 and 10 and then went out to the bow to get a view from there. Note it really was a fiord even though it was named Milford Sound (i.e. sound actually means a bay). As we were leaving ... read more

Mon 2/8/10 Super Monday Down Under It was another lazy sea day aboard the Volendam in the Tasmanian Sea. We got a late start having lost another hour to get to New Zealand time so headed to the Dining Room for a late breakfast before posting the previous day’s blog. Later that morning we went to the Theater to see “Cooking with Drew” where they had the Cruise Director making a Black Forrest Cake with the Executive Pastry Chef and an audience member. It was pretty funny but no one wanted to eat his creation for some reason. We had Lunch in the Dining Room Hamburger for me and Flounder for John. We then headed back to the Culinary Arts Center for a demonstration on decorating cupcakes that looked like ears of corn, Sheppard’s pie, and ... read more

Sun 2/7/10 Meeting Kiwis in the Tasmanian Sea Today was a sea day which everyone was ready for after two busy port days in Australia. We lost an hour on the clocks overnight and will lose another tonight to get to New Zealand time. After two sea days we’ll have a day of Scenic cruising in Milford Sound. It was actually a busy work day for us starting out with Laundry which it was good we started earlier since it was very busy the rest of the day when we walked by. We had things in the dryers before we headed to mass at 8. After mass it was time for the daily Suduko and then updated the blog for Tasmania. I had a lot of trouble getting the photos downloaded so will try again today. ... read more

2/6/10 Keeping our Eyes Skinned in Tasmania These aussies really have a strange way of talking. They greet you with G’Day, tell you no worries mate, and now we have to keep our eyes skinned. This was all as we were traveling on our Taste of Tasmania Tour yesterday in Bunie. Our guide was a semi-retired govt worker/ business developer and apparently a volunteer for the guide job as were most we saw all day. We started out about 9 am with the skies slightly overcast but the sun came out later and it was a very nice day. We travelled first to the Chocolate Factory and our bus was first so we got to have Tea first. Tea meant very desserts like chocolate mint cheesecake and chocolate orange mousse cake for us. Plus a sampler ... read more
