Well today unfortunately didn’t go as planned as we had some bad news this afternoon. We arrived in Grand Turk early in the morning. Lin didn’t have any tours booked but I had a 4x4 Safari tour that didn’t leave until 12:30. So we had a leisurely breakfast in the Lido then headed off to do some shopping (Lin’s idea not mine). She was trying to find some shoes (she forgot her walking shoes) but the shops right at the dock don’t have that type of thing. It was very hot (someone said over 100 and it seemed that way to me) so we decided to stop by Margaritaville to cool off (ok I had a coke and Lin had an Ice Tea). We were the only ship in port so it wasn’t very crowded. Lin ... read more

Oceans and Seas » Caribbean November 22nd 2009

Well today was a sea day and was all about what sea days should be. I started the day with posting yesterday’s blog and then headed up to mass in the Queen’s Lounge. There was quite a group at least 60 people there and the priest said there were 45 at the one Sat night. He’s from Philadelphia and seems very nice. He has done mission work in Peru and with the Zulu tribes in Africa. I’m sure he has some interesting stories. After mass I grabbed a quick breakfast since I figured Lin would still be asleep but she got up shortly after I got back to the cabin. So after she had something to eat she headed off to the Port shopping talk while I went to Bingo in the Crow’s nest. Looks ... read more

I was up pretty early so logged in to check on some emails etc and soon thereafter John was online too (3 hrs earlier due to time differences) so we skyped some more. Lin was half awake during some of the conversations and did eventually pick up on the balcony when he asked about my surprise again. She was thrilled so that was good. Finally said goodbye to John which was hard since we probably won’t be able to Skype again till I get home next Sat. We got ready and headed down to breakfast which was a pretty good buffet. I hadn’t arranged for a shuttle to the pier and figured we’d just take a cab over about 11. When we went down they had one of the shuttle drivers take us over so ... read more

North America November 20th 2009

Well the year’s almost over so guess it’s time for another cruise and another blog. My friend Lin from work and I planned this trip early this year. Originally we were looking at going Christmas week but she decided she was more comfortable with going Thanksgiving Week and it only needed 3 vacation days. Last year we did a 3 day cruise on the Eurodam which was her first cruise (and first time to even see a cruise ship) so we decided on it for the ship. It was also a Sat to Sat cruise which meant we could fly back the Sat of Thanksgiving week instead of the Sun which hopefully will be less of a hassle at the airports. Last year we had booked an inside guarantee but got upgraded to a Balcony cabin ... read more

Well guess it’s about time I finished this blog up. The show on the last night of the ship included the pianist Vladimir Zaitsev and singer Jeff Hooper. Mom and I enjoyed it very much then headed back to our cabin to do our final packing. In the morning we met Erin and Dennis for breakfast then waiting in our cabin till our disembarkation time of 8:45. It was very quiet around the ship that morning and appeared that a lot of people must have gotten off the night before. It was also strange not to have the numbers called and just leave when your scheduled time was but it worked quite well. We found a porter, our bags, and then a cab very quickly. There was no checking of passports or luggage at all. It ... read more

Well this was our last day on the Prinsendam before we disembark tomorrow morning. We arrived in Amsterdam about an hour ago while we were still eating dinner. We went thru the lock about 4:30 then had a nice sail down the canals while eating. Today was spent mostly packing, eating, talking and playing Bingo (we didn’t win). They’ve changed the show times for tonight since some people are planning to get off the ship tonight once it’s cleared. So our show is at 9 instead of 8. I told Mom she could stay up for it if she was good so we’ll head up to the lounge shortly. Packing was a bit confusing since we’re staying in Amsterdam for 2 nights so had to determine what we’ll need there. Also I realized I bought way ... read more

Today we docked in Rosyth Scotland which is about ½ hr away from Edinburgh. Mom and I had an early breakfast in the Lido then met Erin and Dennis in the Queens Lounge for our tour to the Falkirk Wheel & Antonine Wall. We almost canceled this tour when we first got on since they had changed it to a 3 man icon and added the following note “Guests will be walking thru grass knee to waist deep at the wall and this tour is only recommended for physically fit guests”. We teased my mother that would mean neck high grass for here and obviously wouldn’t work for Erin’s wheelchair. She talked to the Shore Excursion office and they indicated the Wheel was accessible and that there was a visitor center that we could stay at ... read more

Today we were in Kirkwall in the Orkney Islands which are part of Scotland. There are 70 islands but only 20 of them are inhabited. 15,000 people live on the “Mainland” with another 5000 on the other islands. We were supposed to tender into the port but it was too windy so we docked instead. Since the tour times were based on tendering they made announcements with the new tour times. We had gone up to the Lido to get breakfast just before 7 since we had to be in the lounge at 8:10 but that was changed to 8:50. Dennis was scheduled for the WWII & Scapa Underwater Adventure by Remote control Camera (Erin had canceled after finding out it wasn’t going to be accessible enough for her). However, they had to cancel the tour ... read more

Not much to post from our last sea day yesterday. It was pretty much our normal sea day pattern. Bingo was played in the Crows Nest because the cast was practicing their next show in the Queens Lounge. That meant they had the old time cage with the Bingo balls and she had to call it without a microphone and to top it off they had a drink class scheduled at the bar behind us at the same time. Well at least Mom won the first game. We’ve been teasing her that the hair cut she got earlier that afternoon made it easier to see the board! It was another formal night followed by a Ventriloquist named Don Bryan. He was very good but could update some of his material. He did a small section with ... read more

Today (Sat) we were in Reykajavik our last stop in Iceland. We docked about 7 am but our tour wasn’t leaving till 11 so since Mom and I were up by 6 we decided it was a good time to do laundry. We did run out to the store at the port to get postcards while things were drying. The jeans still weren’t dry when we got back so we decided to let them dry in the room and went up to meet Erin for breakfast. We took the Blue Lagoon Tour which started with a drive to an old church right next to the president’s house. We were supposed to have a tour inside but it was locked. There was still a nice view from there so got some photos and then we headed to ... read more
