After our morning tour we headed to the Dining room for lunch. Sharon had watermelon gazpacho and grilled chicken breast sandwich in a bun, followed by more coffee ice cream (she forgot to mention that after climbing all of those steps out of the cave, they conveniently located a couple of cafes where we each bought a scoop of ice cream). John had spicy linguini with Andouille sausage and passion fruit mousse in white cake. We were thwarted in many of our attempts to do other shipboard activities. They were out of the daily Sudoku puzzles. And posting our blog took much more time than expected with problematic internet connections. John called his mom and finally connected, was able to say hi when that connection dropped as well. As we were leaving his iPhone showed no ... read more

This was an early morning since we had to check in for our tour by 6:50 so we had a quick bite at the Lido (just toast for Sharon and Fruit for John) before heading to the Showroom. It was still very dark out and turned out the captain had arranged to dock instead of tender at this port. However, the pier is very small and hard to dock so he had to wait for the sun to come out a bit. This made us about 30 mins late for the tours. However, seeing the pier later made it obvious why it was difficult. It’s much shorter than the ship and even then is split into 3 sections joined by temporary type bridges. We headed out on the Melissani Lake & Drogarati Cave tour with a ... read more

Europe » Greece » Ionian Islands » Corfu October 9th 2010

With some extra time in the morning before our tour would be ready, we had breakfast in the formal dining room, a nice change from the hectic pace of the cafeteria style Lido. Since we were arriving from a non-EU country there was a bit of a formality we had to go thru. Our bus picked us up at the ship and drove us to the port-Authority building. We marched into the North-West side of the building and then out the South-East side, showing our papers (driver’s license and boarding card) to no-one. We were however handed a Duty-Free guide to the various shops in Corfu. On the other side of this “passport control” checkpoint we got back on the bus which had driven around to the other side of the building. Corfu is one of ... read more

Last night was our first formal night so we dressed up for a wonderful dinner in the Dining room. John had the sea salt cod and lobster cake which he really enjoyed. Then he couldn’t decide between the Duck and Sausage Gumbo or 4 Mushroom cream soup so tried both. He said it was the best mushroom soup he’d ever had but the Duck and Sausage one beat it out for last night. Sharon had the Blackberry soup which was good except for the seeds. For the main course he had horse radish crusted halibut and Sharon had the rack of lamb. Both were very good. We both had the chocolate crème Brule for dessert. We stopped by the casino on the way to the show which probably wasn’t a good idea. Sharon won a bit ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice October 7th 2010

It was an early morning after our wonderful tour last night to catch our Venice Sightseeing Tour. We had a quick breakfast in the Lido then headed out on our tour. They used the same water taxis and dock as last night. We then walked over the first 4 bridges from last night then entered the Doges’ Palace. Venice was an Oligarchy that lasted over 1000 years. It was comprised of 300 families of power and wealth. The Doge was selected from these families and had to be over 80 years old so they weren’t around long enough to be threat. The palace was very beautiful especially the painted and gold leafed ceilings even in the Golden Staircase. We saw the rooms where the senate, the accused, the lawyers etc waited to see the Doge. The ... read more

We were in the first group to depart the Nieuw Amsterdam for the nighttime shore excursion. What better way to start a Romantic Mediterranean cruise than with an evening gondola ride in the canals of Venice with your new wife. For those of you who have been paying attention, Sharon and I were married on Saturday. After leaving the ship we boarded a water taxi that took us to a landing near the start of the Grand Canal. Even during the nighttime, vendors had their wares for sale on the open areas near the dock and on the bridges adjoining the many islands of Venice… there are 49 islands altogether and over 800 bridges. Most of these are the foot bridges you see in pictures of Venice with gondolas passing deftly beneath. But there were 5 ... read more

We’re aboard the Nieuw Amsterdam and getting ready for our evening. The bus left the hotel about 11 this morning for the short ride to the ship. There are quite a few ships in port today including the Vision of the Sea and the Queen Victoria. The bus stopped at the luggage area quite a ways from the ship where we had to identify our luggage and turn it into the porters. Then we followed our guide to the check-in area. There was no line for checking in but at 11:45 they hadn’t started boarding yet so we waited in the waiting area for about an hour till they called #10. After the X-Ray and photos it was still quite a walk to the ship. As expected the cabins were not ready so they ushered us ... read more

We’re in our Venitian hotel packing up to head to the ship in a couple of hours. We left our Malibu hotel late Monday morning and headed down Pacific Coast Highway to LAX in the rain. We arrived at the airport very early so had a leisurely lunch and afternoon of Sudoku before boarding our KLM flight. We had a direct flight to Amsterdam and then a connecting flight to Venice. We have to say that the leg room on KLM is the smallest we’ve ever seen and 6” more of leg room they were pushing before we left. John managed to sleep a bit after a glass of wine and Sharon as usual did not (though she may have dozed off for a few minutes). We arrived in Amsterdam about 11 am very tired and ... read more

Time to head out on another cruise but this one is very special since it's our Honeymoon. We had a wonderful wedding day yesterday and are relaxing in Malibu before flying to Venice (via Amsterdam) tomorrow. On Wed morning we'll be boarding the Nieuw Amsterdam for a 12 day cruise from Venice to Barcelona. John has been to several of the cities we'll be visiting but it's Sharon's first trip to this part of Europe. Our ports will include 5 ports in Italy, 1 in Croatia, 3 in Greece and finally Barcelona. We'll update this blog when we can from the ship to let you all know where we've been and the sights we've seen. We'll probably also inlcude how we're doing at Bingo and the Casino as well as our dining experiences and our comments ... read more

2/15/2010 Sad Scenic Sea Day This is probably our last post from the ship as we get off in the morning and have fly from Auckland back to LA via Sydney. It’s been a sea day and we’ll be leaving for the Master Chef’s dinner shortly. We started the day by viewing White Island which is an active volcano and then attending mass followed by breakfast in the Lido and then posted the blogs for the previous few days. We were going to attend the Disembarkation Talk but it was full so we spent time in the Casino instead (I should have gone to the talk but John was still ahead). We then headed to lunch in the Lido where John sampled the food on the Indian Buffet. I then spent some time pre-packing and John ... read more
