Woke up really early as we had a 6 am flight to Cusco. Checked out off Samay Wasi and off we went, the plane ride to Cusco was fantasic, the sun was just waking up as well and casting a weird and beautiful glow on everything. Looking below we could see cotton wool clouds and the Andes snow covered peaks peeping out now and again. Just too beautiful for words. Got picked up again from the airport, courtesy of backpacker hostel we were staying at (Samay Wasi). Not one's to waste time, we checked and went off to explore the beautiful city around us. WOW was all I could think, the narrow alleys, the new town being built on the old Inca walls, the weathered faces of the locals. It was all too beautiful. Also we ... read more

Sadly this was to be our very last day in Lima. So we decided to go and visit the Huaca Pucllana ruins. This looked reasonably closeby on the map .... so we thought we'd catch a young walk from the hostel. Yeah right! Ended up taking us over an hour to get there ..... and much to our delight we were rewarded with a free tour of the place ..... by an actual English speaking Peruvian woman! Anshu at this point realised she had done the dumbest thing - she had hidden her money under her matress and started praying and hoping it would still be there when we got back =)) There was a museum section before the tour of the ruins and these housed, amongst other exciting things, a preseved mummy! This was the ... read more

Decided to explore and see a bit more of Lima, maybe venture into the heart of Lima, city center. We were told that it was about a 20min ride by bus. Not speaking any Spanish and virtually nobody speaking English, we thought it might be safer to catch a taxi. The cook at the backpacker volunteered to come with us to the city by bus - but we would have to wait for his shift to finish. Though we are cautious and suspicious by nature, we felt we would trust the cook to take us to the city by bus. In fact it was a good combination - as Anshu is the over suspicious and cautious one and I trust too readily =) We hung around at bit and talked to some of the other backpackers. ... read more

Miraflores is a district of the Lima Province in Peru. Known for its shopping areas, gardens, flower-filled parks and beaches, it is one of the upscale districts that make up the city of Lima. So we started the day with a good breakfast, the freshly made papaya and mango juice was to die for, very very delicious. We then quickly showered, dressed and set of to explore Miraflores district on foot. We were advised to start off by exploring Larcomar the newest shopping mall in the area (we love shopping) and only two block away, towards the ocean. We went around in circles for a while - unavailble to find this large shopping mall and our map was of no help either, we decided to give up and walk over to the railing and enjoy the ... read more

Departed from Auckland airport at 1630 hours on our flight to Lima (Peru), with a stopover in Buenos Aires. The first leg of the journey took 12 hours, with a 6 hour transit in Buenos (where we realized that no one spoke any English at all!!) We had a good laugh on the plane as we had on actually planned the trip as well as we could have. We roughly knew where we were staying on any given night. After the exhausting 6 hour transit, we started the second leg on the journey and arrived at Lima airport at 2300 hours, the journey had been about 5 hours. Managed to get some pictures on the Andes mountains while flying over Chile. Anshu collected her suitcase at the airport, only to find that the suitcase had been ... read more

South America June 21st 2007

This all started a long time ago, when I still in primary school and had a keen fascination for the lost civilizations of the world. I had a lot about Machu Pinchu, and always thought how fantastic it would be to one day visit it and see a bit of the South American continent at the same time. Finally I decided this was the year to do it and mustered up the courage to do it. Everyone I spoke to advised me that it was a bad idea for a female to travel by herself to South America. Even my travel agent had horror stories to tell on how he was drugged and mugged. This put a serious damper on my plans....but I was determined. So I asked my sister (Anshu) if wanted to come along, ... read more

BAls & I went to the snake farm, elephant riding and quad biking. Anshu was love sick and just wanted to sit by the phone in case Arun phoned. Bals and had heaps of fun and were scared for one second when we could feel the power of the python circled around our legs. They are quite powerful and could easily have crushed our bones - sheer power in their lithe bodies - enough respect. ... read more
