South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz July 17th 2007

Today we went back to our market place and explored the markets a bit more, did some shopping as well, stuff was so cheap here. Towards lunch time we managed to score a sweet deal with a cabbie. He would take us to Valle de la Luna, wait for us and then bring us back to La Paz. Valle de la Luna is approx 10kms from the city center but can take 30 mins as the ride is mostly going up.Couldnt believe our luck. So we agreed to meet the taxi driver at a fixed location, we had to something to eat first. Found a lovely little restaurant with the best food that we had eated so far. Was like a buffet salads - and we had plenty of salads, soup, mains and then deserts. We ... read more

Today we started by organising to get some our laundry sorted nearby the hostel. Explored La Paz at a leisurely pace. Went in to the city and changed some money from the money vendor next to Iglesia de San Francisco (church). This imposing church is a blend of mestizo and Spanish baroque styles, and is located on the plaza San Francisco. San Francisco church was built in 1549 and is considered to be one of the foremost examples of Spanish architecture. The front is decorated with fanciful carvings of birds, masks, pine cones in a mixture of Spanish and Indian traditions. City view were simply amazing, the city seems to shaped like a large bowl, the city center being the bottom indise of the bowl. Standing in the city center looking up and around, one is ... read more

Left Puno early in the morning after saying goodbye to the lovely couple who had looked after us. Our bus was about an hour late. We finally set off. The entire journey was so scenic and beautiful, we didnt want to sleep at all. So we had our iPod on, and listened to some raggae tunes while enjoying the scenery. For three quauters of the journey we were driving along Lake Titicaca, slowly realising the immense size of the lake. First stop was the Bolivian border, no hassles crossing over. Jumped back onto the bus on the other side, was good to jump out and stretch the legs a bit. Next stop was at Copacabana, here we stopped for an hour - so everyone could have lunch. Along with being sick in Puno with cold, we ... read more

Still very sick today - spent most the morning trying to organise bus tickets to La Paz (Bolivia). The journey is roughly 8 hrs by bus, very scenic route. Couldnt find any buses. Went back to hostel via the markets on one of the three wheeled trik trik. Our hostel owner said he knew a bus company and would organise two tickets for us for tomorrow morning. That sorted we concentrated on resting and recovering from our colds. Took short walk to buy supply for the bus jounrey tomorrow. In the evening took some photos for the lovely lady owner of finger puppets she wanted to sell on the internet and then the photo with them both, they had looked after us as if we were their kids. Lovely couple. By late evening we were feeling ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island July 13th 2007

After arriving and checking into accomodation, we had a quick two hour snooze and some breakfast. We were both sick with colds, the freezing conditions were doing us no favors. By this time we realised that almost all town and cities in Peru had a central plaza (Plaza de Armes or Plaza Mayor) where the locals hang around and chatted. We soon dicovered the central plaza (Plaza de Armes in the case) and enjoyed the view, as there is always a church in the Plaza, with exquisite architecture (spanish influence). Next we headed in the direction of the lake. Lake Titicaca is the world's highest lake navigable, the waters supposed holy and of the loveliest blue colour. On our way there we encountered the army band performing as the shore of Lake Titicaca. Happily making music ... read more

What a day. Packed our bags and checked out of the hostel. Headed straight for the bus stop to buy tickets to Puno and head out. Unfortunately the strike was still on and tickets were not available in the morning. After hanging around and talking to some of the other tourist we discovered there was a bus leaving in the evening. We bought the tickets immediately as they would be in short supply. An agent before us had already bought three quarters of the seats to sell at a better price in town. Now the question was what we would do for the rest of the day. We surely could not hang around the bus stop for the whole day. We headed back to backpacker hostel, paid for half day accomodation and hang out, even had ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Cusco July 11th 2007

Today we decided not to do too much, and just walk around Cusco at a leisurely pace. As it was our last day here. As we walked towards the central plaza (Plaza Mayor), we could hear a large commotion, people were out in their hundreds with banners, chanting slogans in Spanish. We were later to find out that this was a teachers strike and the transport industry had joined in and therefore had come a halt. No buses and trains were coming in or leaving the town. The streets were pretty deserted as almost everyone seemed to have joined the peaceful protest. Some of the backpackers were pretty distraught as they had bought train tickets to Machu Picchu and were being told that they would not be refunded. We just walked around the whole day, hoping ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu July 10th 2007

Got up at 4:30 in the morning and walked over to the bus stop, still very sleepy but very excited at the same time. We are waiting for the bus to take us to Machu Picchu (the place I had read volumes about but never seen or imagined I would see). We leave at 5:30am. Arrive there we line up at the gates, cannot see anything yet of Macch Picchu, the scenery high up in the Andes peak is still so beautiful. Entry is US$40!!! What a rip off - but I dont really care as I hope quite that it will be worth it. There is a larger banner stating that Machu Picchu has won a place in the new 7 wonders of the world. We pay and enter, we walk a bit and then ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Aguas Calientes July 9th 2007

Today - we pack up our bags and lock them up at the backpacker hostel and only have our small sathels to have with us, we are hoping to get to Aguas Calientes by tonight. We have bought no tickets and some to the other backerpackers are advising us not to go without buying a ticket from Cusco and they are sold out. We are young, foolish and brave =) We catch a local bus from Cusco to Urubamba. In Urubamba we jump of one bus (combi) and into another heading to Ollantaytambo. The ride is always lovely in Peru, sitting high up in the Andes. We arrive at Ollantaytambo and decide to walk around and grab a bit to eat for lunch. It started raining just as we got of the bus so we started ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Pisac July 8th 2007

Today we went to explore the weekend Pisac market. Pisac Sunday market we are told is something worth experiencing and only 30kms from Cusco. We catch a local bus and head of for Pisac, the scenery along the way is awe inspiring. Short walk from the bus stop is the market, one cannot miss it as it is such a hub of activity. We walk on the cobbled street towards the market and encounter trader sitting along the steps on the cobbled street, enjoying the clean crisp air and the glorious sunny day. On Sundays only, campesinos from surrounding villages set up a barter market, or mercado de treque, which is an ancient Peruvian custom and an interesting example of the informal economies upon which highlanders depend. Quechuan-speaking Indians sit behind huge piles of potatoes, carrots, ... read more
