Initially, this long weekend trip to Zion was supposed to be with a group of friends. Since none of them were able to make it, I changed it to a family camping weekend. My mom, sister, and her boyfriend all came along. For my mom, this would be her first camping experience. It will be quite interesting to see how well she deals with it. I picked up our rental car for the weekend; a Chevy HHD, on Friday after work. After packing up all our camping supplies, food, and personal belongings, there was barely enough room for the 4 of us! The trunk was packed all the way up to the roof of the car blocking my view out the rear-view mirror. The plan was to drive through the night in order to arrive in ... read more

Having a rental car for the past few days while my car was in the shop has definitely inspired me to take a mini road-trip. I had thought about a long weekend in San Francisco but settled on a quick day trip up the central coast to the Cambria area. Always up for a spontaneous adventure, Shea was more then happy to tag along. We left home in my rented Toyota Yaris at the reasonable hour of 7am for the 3 hour drive. First stop was Goleta where we stocked up on snacks and picked up breakfast before continuing the rest of the foggy drive. Thankfully, the fog started to lift once we hit San Luis Obispo around 10am. Our first stop this morning was Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Located atop a hill in the ... read more

These days, my getaways have been relegated to day trips to nearby destinations close enough for a day trip. The economic realities of the day have all but put an end to the usual 2 week European trips that I have been used to since 2000. For the past few weeks, I've had a burning need to get away but when my pocketbook was consulted, any possible ideas were quickly dashed. So at the very last minute I decided that a day trip to a nearby national park was in order. Along with Kevin, we both chose to go for an extreme day trip to Death Valley, nearly 6 hours away. The idea was conjured up about 8pm on a Friday night and by midnight we were on the road. We picked up Michelle who set ... read more

This morning was our last morning here in Zion. With nothing really planned today, we just slept in and took our time dismantling our campsite. Prior to leaving, we decided to do one last hike. Since we didn't want to get a late start on the road, we picked a rather easy trail. We picked Weeping Rock Trail which is a very short trail making it quite a popular trail. The trail wasn't very steep however 2 days of relatively strenuous hiking had caught up to us. This trail was nothing compared to The Virgin Narrows and Angel's Landing. However, we just weren't able to muster the energy for this. It was at this moment that I realized that I was on hiking overkill and was so done with Zion. But I held on, eventually making ... read more

Thanks to the old fart in the next campsite abruptly putting an end to our night, I was able to get a full night's rest in my tent. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for Kevin. Unable to sleep, he apparently got out of his tent in the middle of the night and was spinning around. That morning when we went to the bathroom, he went into a stall and proceeded to vomit the contents of his entire stomach. I had never in my life, heard so much vomit hit the toilet water! The effects of too much tequila rears it's ugly head again. I tried to control my laughter as much as possible knowing that he would start to feel better once all of that was out of his system. That morning, we ... read more

After a long day at work and a 3 hour class afterwards, Kevin and I set off at around 11pm Thursday night for a long drive to Utah. For the past few weeks, we had been planning out a long weekend trip up to Utah's Zion National Park. Our goal was to do 2 of Zion's famous hikes, up the Virgin Narrows as well as to the top of Angel's Landing. Throughout the night, we drove across California's Mojave Desert before finally arriving in Las Vegas around 5am. Unable to get any substantial sleep along the drive, I was surprisingly still in a good mood as we pulled into the Venetian Hotel. Kevin had never been to Las Vegas and wanted to stop to try his luck on some gambling. We walked around The Venetian's ... read more

Call me crazy but who gets up at 1:30am and drives 5 hours just to hike around and drive back? Only I would do something as spontaneous as that. At 10:00pm Saturday night, I was just lounging around telling myself that I should go on a mini road trip. Since it was already pretty late, I doubt anybody would have wanted to tag along on such short notice. I decided that I would drive up to Mammoth Lakes and visit the Devil's Postpile National Monument. So I went to bed hoping to get a few hours sleep before I ventured off. Leaving at around 2am, I hit the road loaded up on coffee for the 5 hour drive. It seemed as if the only people on the road at this early hour were people driving ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Puerto Rico » San Juan December 15th 2007

After 5 consecutive days where we were exploring a new port every day, today was our only day at sea. We spent much of the day exploring the parts of the ship that we had yet to explore as well as spending way too much time at the buffet. In between the ship exploration and buffet stops, we were just lounging by the pool and relaxing. Today was the only day during the duration of the cruise where we had sun the entire day. This brought everybody out to the pool. Today we finally found the elusive rock climbing wall which we had been trying to find almost everyday. We watched a few people attempt to climb it and although I had good intentions of trying it out, I decided to not embarrass myself and ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Barbados » Bridgetown December 13th 2007

Our final port of call and southern-most stop was in Bridgetown, Barbados. An independent Caribbean island nation, Barbados gained it's independence from Britain but still retains much of it's British charm. This island is best known for it's white sandy beaches, rums, and for being a playground for the wealthy especially along it's western coast. Our excursion that we chose for the day was a coastal cruise in a five-star catamaran with the opportunity to swim and snorkel with sea turtles. Since our excursion didn't begin until 9:30, we took full advantage of the chance to sleep in this morning. Once we exited the ship and met with our group, we all packed into a bus for the short 5 minute ride to our catamaran. When we arrived at our catamaran, everybody took off their ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Saint Lucia » Castries December 12th 2007

When we awoke this morning, we were docked in Castries, the capital city of St. Lucia. The island is famous for being very verdant and lush as well as for it's famous landmark, The Pitons. We signed up for a full island tour which would last most of the day. Included in this tour was a drive through the rainforest, a stop at a fishing village, a stop at a volcano, a hike to a waterfall, and a stop at the town of Soufriere. The large amount of rainfall the island receives is responsible for the lush vegetation and that was evident this morning. We left the ship to join our tour and the skies were overcast with sporadic drizzle. The group was split up into 2 vans as we drove through downtown Castries. Like ... read more
