It was another early wake up call this morning as we had a full day of sightseeing in Paris to do. After a bland breakfast in the hotel this morning, we all boarded our coach to head out to the Louvre museum. It seemed that most everyone purchased the optional museum pass which allowed you to skip the line and just go the front. All 6 of us stuck together and decided to go find the major works of art like the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, and the Winged Victory. We found the Mona Lisa which was overwhelmed by tourists. I tried sneaking a photo but was caught by security. Eventually, I was able to steal one but with a bunch of heads in the shot. After finding the Mona Lisa, Suzanne wanted to ... read more

This morning was a very early wake up as we were to meet outside of the hotel with all our bags to join up with our Conitki group. I had a bit of a panic this morning trying to stuff as much crap into my backpack as possible. Apparently they were going to weigh our suitcase to ensure it was less than 45lbs. Why they do this, I have no idea. We checked out of the Imperial Hotel with my backpack bulging trying to get my suitcase below the alloted weight limit. Outside, there were about 10 others waiting to get picked up to meet at the Royal National Hotel. After waiting awhile, we realized that we probably weren't going to get picked up so we all ventured over to the Royal National. Thankfully, it ... read more

It was a pretty early wake up this morning as we had a full day of intense sightseeing to do. We re-boarded our hop on/hop off bus to make our way to Buckingham Palace, the Queen of England's residence. We watched the changing of the guards along with what seemed like a million other people. It was pretty boring and not very eventful. Afterwards everyone else wanted to take a tour of the inside of the palace. It wasn't my cup of tea, but I figured what the heck. Tours were available to the general public when the queen was not in residence. Lucky for us, she was out of town today. Once we bought our tickets and had an assigned time, Amy's stomach problems set in and she needed to quickly find a bathroom. ... read more

Our flight finally arrived in the UK at around 10am. The weather was a bit dreary as one would expect in London but everyone seemed to be in good spirits as we finally arrived in Europe!!! We were a bit on edge though, it being the 4th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks as well as the recent London Underground bombings. We made it this far and weren't about to let anything get in our way. Customs was pretty easy and within a half hour we had retrieved our bags and were ready to venture into the city. We decided to take the Underground from the airport to Russell Square. The entire journey would take a little less than an hour. Sitting there on the Underground was when the jet-lag appeared to set in. I looked ... read more

After months and months of anticipation, the trip is finally here!!!! I left home around 10am to meet up at Mar and Amy's house. Kevin was to drive me to the airport while Vern and Bill took Mar, Amy, and Patrice. Suzanne and Clay were already at the airport to catch their flight with Air Canada. We checked in at the British Airways counter and it was fairly easy with no hassles. Afterwards, all 7 of us went to the food court where we just hung out for a bit and grabbed a bite to eat. We said our goodbyes to Kevin, Vern, and Bill and entered our terminal to wait for our 3:35 flight to London!!! Boarded the plane and thankfully all 4 of us were able to sit together in the middle. We had ... read more

Kevin and I woke up really early this morning and drove up to Sylmar to meet up with Keston, Sally, Erika, Rocio, Rick, and the 3 kids. We met everybody at a Mcdonalds in Sylmar off the Interstate 5. After having breakfast, we all set off in our 2 vehicles for the 4 hour drive up to Yosemite. Just before arriving at Yosemite, we stopped in the town of Oakhurst to pick up alcohol, food, and supplies. We finally arrived at Yosemite around midday and stopped at a scenic vantage point overlooking the entire Yosemite Valley. With one of the best views in the entire park, the viewpoint was crowded with visitors making a quick stop to take their obligatory photos and soak in the scenery. Continuing our drive into Yosemite Valley, we made a ... read more

Patrice and I packed up my Pathfinder early this morning for our drive up to Monterey to check out the Monterey Bay Aquarium. We left really early at about 5am for the 4-5 hour drive up to Monterey. It was around 10am when we finally arrived and we headed straight for the Aquarium. It was not yet even noon and we were already sweating while standing in line waiting to be let in. We didn't really come dressed for the weather as it was quite overcast back home. Today in Monterey, the temperatures were going to climb into the upper 90's! We finally got in and spent the next 2 hours walking around the aquarium and checking out all the great exhibits and tanks. I've been here many times before but I always am fascinated ... read more

Europe » Spain » District of Madrid » Madrid May 31st 2004

The last day of the tour began with an early morning trip to the Spanish Royal Palace. For the past few days, Madrid had been abuzz with the excitement from the royal wedding of Prince Felipe. The wedding took place at the Catedral de la Almudena, adjacent to the Spanish Royal Palace. Now over a week since that historic wedding, here we were standing in the courtyard of where it all took place. Our tour of the Spanish Royal Palace was guided and with all guided tours, I quickly lost interest in what our guide was telling us. Inside, the palace was very much how I had envisioned. It was quite vast, lavish, and definitely built to impress. We wandered through the many rooms of the palace while admiring all it's intricate details and beautiful ... read more

Today was another early wake up as we had to reboard our bus for the drive back to Madrid. Before leaving, the entire group gathered in front of the bus for a group photo. Since we were such a small group compared to most Contiki tours, an "official" group photo was probably cancelled. We drove for most of the morning back to the capital, arriving in Madrid just before noon. We were finally back to where it all started almost 2 weeks earlier at the Hotel Praga. The rest of today was a free day as there weren't any planned activities. However, the group was going to get together later in the evening for dinner. Shea and I decided to venture into Madrid and visit a few of the famous museums. We knew that they were ... read more

Europe » Spain » Valencian Community » Valencia May 28th 2004

4 days of relaxing and lounging in the Balearic Islands have come to an end. This morning was an early wake up as we had to catch our morning ferry to take us back to the mainland. Once we all boarded the ferry, everybody pretty much crashed for the duration of the trip. Back at the port at Denia, we reboarded our Contiki coach which seemed like it had been forever since we were last on it. We continued down the coast to the city of Valencia which is Spain's third largest city. Valencia was the only one night stop during the entire tour and nobody really knew what to expect. The only thing about Valencia that I knew was that it was home to Paella. We arrived in Valencia and headed straight for our ... read more
