Today was Clay, Suzanne, Mar, Amy, and Patrice's last day with the tour as they chose not to continue to Athens. Suzanne and Clay had a few extra days here in Rome to themselves but everyone else would be flying home tomorrow morning. Today was a full on day of sightseeing. It was yet another early wake up as we were to be met at the Vatican for our tour of the Vatican Museum. We caught the public bus to the stop for Vatican City and rushed to get in line. It was still quite early but the line was already really long. Our guide was an older woman who kept saying "Mama Mia" with every sentence. At first it was kind of humorous but eventually got quite irritating. Once inside, we had to go ... read more

We left Florence this morning and headed for Rome. I found out this morning that poor Cassie who had been suffering from severe stomach issues for the duration of the trip would be leaving early. Once we arrive in Rome, she would be heading out to the airport to fly home to Australia. I guess she held out for as long as she could. She still had a few more weeks of travelling left as she was supposed to take a cruise through the Greek islands once our tour finished up in Athens. Before Rome, we made a quick stop in the city of Modena. This town is famous for being the home of Ferrari. We had about an hour here to grab a bite to eat and if interested, check out the Ferrari museum ... read more

I awoke this morning with Patrice already gone. I didn't think she'd really wake up early just to go to a museum. Back on the coach to be dropped off in the middle of Florence for our day of sight-seeing. Our first thing of the day was to watch a demonstration on Florentine leather. It was actually pretty interesting as we were shown how to differentiate between real and fake leather. Again, as in the previous demonstrations in Venice, we were lead into the show room where they sold a variety of leather products. I actually contemplated purchasing something here but after looking at a few of the prices, I decided to check out some other places before making my decision. After the demonstration, we had an hour before our guided walking tour. We decided ... read more

This morning we were off to go check out Pisa with its famous leaning tower before heading off to Florence. I was glad to be leaving this nasty hotel which was by far the worst of the trip. I slept above the covers last night after noticing red bumps on my legs from the previous night. My suspicions were confirmed this morning when I heard other people complaining about bed-bugs in their beds as well. We arrived in Pisa around mid-day and were only given about 45 minutes to check the place out. It was quite a warm day out today and the place was crawling with tourists. The first thing you notice when walking towards the leaning tower is the many tourists doing the typical tourist pose of trying to hold back the tower. ... read more

This morning I woke up with a bunch of red bumps on my legs and feet. The first thing I thought of was bedbugs!!! It wouldn't have surprised me if it was indeed bedbugs as this hotel on the outskirts of Venice was by far the worst hotel of the trip. After a very sub-par breakfast, which was very typical of our Italian breakfasts, we all headed back on the coach for our full day in Venice. Since Venice was an island, we had to catch a water taxi which took about 15-20 minutes. It was a very quiet ride as it was still a bit early in the morning but yet people were still filled with the quiet anticipation of seeing Venice. Once the first views of the Camponile Bell Tower came into view, ... read more

It's been over a week but I can never get used to these early wake up calls. This morning we all boarded the coach to leave the cool, clean, and efficient Alpine countries and descend into warm and chaotic Italy. First stop in the morning though was for a little white water rafting excursion for a few hours. It was supposed to be Patrice, Suzanne, Clay, and I doing this but apparently Suzanne and Clay starting feeling a bit under the weather and decided to forego this optional excursion. Only about 15 of us ended up going. Once we were dropped off, we all signed our waivers and picked out our wet-suits, helmets, and booties. We all got changed and were given a few instructions on how to properly paddle as well as what to ... read more

After a big night of drinking and partying, we woke up this morning to get some physical activity in, as if we haven't been doing enough walking. Most people decided to just sleep in as they were too hung over to go mountain biking. I didn't think that the course would be overly strenuous, boy was I wrong. About 12 of us went over to the bike shop where we were met by about 30 others from another tour. We all got fitted for our bikes and off we went. We all rode single file along some very easy trails and along the sides of the road. The ride was very scenic with the green mountains being topped off by the clouds and fog. We passed some kind of sheep show which might be kind ... read more

This morning I woke up feeling all refreshed after my first real good night sleep of the trip so far. We made our way back over to Munich's city center this morning for a little more sightseeing and shopping. It was still sporadically raining when we arrived in the city. It was not even 10 o'clock and the area around the Marienplatz was already buzzing with activity. Today was the first day of Oktoberfest and we watched part of the parade march through the square. There were bands marching and wagons all decorated while being pulled by horses. People in the wagons were dressed in traditional German attire while drinking beer from their steins, and it was only 10am. One of the wagons was even playing La Bamba, how typically German. After we bored of ... read more

Today was another early morning as we have 3 countries today. We left Lucerne and made our way on the coach over to Mt. Stanserhorn. Arriving in the small town of Stans, we all got our funicular ticket that would take us all the way to the top of the mountain with views of the surrounding Alps. The entire group took this optional and we all boarded this little train that would take us to the furnicular. It was a very relaxing ride with cool crisp air mixed with the sounds of cowbells ringing in the distance. We then all got into a very tight squeezing funicular for the rest of the ride. Everytime the funicular dipped, I got a little uneazyness in stomach and some people let out a few gasps. For those in the ... read more

Today's drive was going to be the longest driving day of the tour. We left Paris for Lucerne, Switzerland. Sitting on the coach for such a long period of time is like hell and we tried to pass the time by listening to our IPOD's, reading a book, but mostly we used the time to catch up on some sleep. Me, Amy, and Patrice tried to kill some time by playing Poker. We all knew we were in Switzerland when the landscape became much more rugged, mountainous, and greener. You could just tell by looking at the cars and the homes that the Swiss enjoyed one of the highest standards of living in the world. While stopped at a rest stop, one of our tour mates, Mandy from Toronto left her wallet including her passport. ... read more
