This morning I caught one of the taxis in front of my hotel to take me to Marrakesh's international airport. My time here in Morocco had sadly come to an end. I was a little apprehensive about flying with Easyjet but the flight was just as easy and painless as with any other airline. The 2 1/2 hour flight went quickly and smoothly and in no time we were landing at Charles De Gaulle in Paris. Figuring out the train from the airport to the central city was surprisingly easy as the train went through Paris' outer suburbs. I was a little surprised to see how much graffiti was present in the suburbs and how run down some of the areas appeared. The train arrived at the Chatelet Des Halles stop after a ride of about ... read more

I woke up this morning a bit sad that the tour had now ended but I'm glad I stayed another night before flying out to Paris. Prior to coming on this trip, the plan was to use this extra day to take a day trip over to Ait Benhaddou. However, I made such good friends with some of the people on this tour that I instead chose to spend the day hanging out with them. Looking out the window this morning, the weather did not look good. The skies were looking quite ominous and appeared ready to drench Marrakesh at any moment. Troy and Melanie were not staying at the hotel tonight but were instead transferring to a riad in the middle of the medina. The plan for the morning was for them to drop off ... read more

So after surviving the overnight train, we finally made it to our final city and Morocco's tourism hot spot, Marrakesh. We pulled into Marrakesh's train station at around 9am and again we all caught taxis from the station to our hotel in the Ville Nouvelle section of Marrakesh, Hotel Le Caspien. While driving around in the taxis, it was apparent why Marrakesh was known as the red city as the walls and buildings seem to all be some sort of reddish tint. In 24 hours we had gone from the blue town to the red city! As it was still early in the morning, our rooms were not yet ready so Abdul recommneded that we go out and find breakfast somewhere. Melanie, Troy, Liz, Sophie, and I went wandering and eventually made to Avenue Mohammed V, ... read more

This morning we left the blue town to spend the day in the seaside town of Tangier. We caught the local bus which was an interesting experience as there was some fascinating characters on board. I unfortunately got stuck sitting next to a woman who appeared to be having motion sickness and was throwing up into a plastic bag. When others vomit it, usually triggers a reaction in me that causes me to vomit as well. Thankfully, her friend in a nearby seat agreed to switch seats with me and I didn't have to hear any more vomiting. We arrived in Tangier at lunch time and I was a little impressed at all the modern looking residential buildings. I was beginning to wonder why Tangier had such a bad repuation for seediness and danger. We all ... read more

After almost a week of pretty much going non-stop, we finally had a day where we can take it easy and nothing was really planned. The rain from the night before had given way to beautiful sunny skies with lingering cumulus clouds. I had gotten used to waking up early on this trip and today was no exception. At 8:00, I went down to see if anybody was having breakfast but nobody from the group was there. Apparently, everybody took advantage of the free day to sleep in! I went back to my room to relax for a bit and found the resident house cat relaxing on my door mat. I went back down for breakfast at 9:30 and found a few members of the group there. We were all discussing what to do with our ... read more

We left Fez aboard a public bus heading to the town of Chefchaouen. Called Chaoen for short, Chefchaouen is arguably Morocco's most beautiful city. It is set in the heart of Morocco's Rif Mountains and is well known for it's blue colored homes in it's medina. Abdul also gave us a little surprising heads up in regards to the availability of marijuana in Chefchaouen. He told us not to be surprised if we were offered some marijuana as the surrounding hills are known to be a hotbed for marijuana production. The bus ride was just a few hours as we drove through some very beautiful and verdant countryside. The weather took a turn for the worse upon arrival into Chefchaouen. What had been a slight drizzle throughout much of the bus ride had now turned into ... read more

Today was our full day to explore the city of Fez. It is said that Fez is the most complete medieval city in the Arab world and is considered to be the spiritual heart of Morocco. After breakfast, our guide for the day, Hakima, arrived and would be showing us around Fez. Our first stop of the day was the Royal Palace. It's golden doors were impressive as well as it's beautiful mosaic work. Unfortunately, visitors are not allowed to enter so this was basically just a photo stop. From here we walked along Rue Bou Khessissat in the Jewish Quarter known as the Mellah. This street was lined with homes of wood and wrought iron above a wide variety of shops. We simply walked around while Hakima explained a few things but nobody was really ... read more

From Moulay Idriss, we all took taxis to the nearby Roman ruins at Volubilis. Set in a fertile plain, Volubilis is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is considered to be a well preservered example of a Roman colonial town on the fringes of the Roman Empire. Abdul orgainzed for us to have a guided tour of the ruins. However, I usually tune out guides on guided tours and this tour was no exception. I was content with just walking around and checking things out at my own leisure and making up my own stories in my mind of what the various ruins were. My favorite part of the ruins were of course the brothel but also the many beautifully designed mosaics weathered from exposure to the elements for almost 2,000 years. After spending the morning ... read more

From our hotel in Casablanca, we all walked the short distance to the train station where we caught the train over to the capital city of Rabat. It was a very uneventful train ride as most everyone in the group had yet to really get to know each other. Thankfully, the ride was short and we arrived in Rabat in about an hour. Nearby was a small pizzeria place that Abdul had led us to. Here we were able to store our luggage while we had a few hours to explore the sights of the city. Troy and Melanie asked if I wanted to hang out with them, so the 3 of us took a taxi over to the Hassan Mosque. The taxi ride to the mosque was where I finally was able to put my ... read more

Morocco had long been one of my dream destinations. It has such an exotic aura to it and with my fascination with all things Islamic, I jumped at the chance of going when I found a tour company offering a trip at such a reasonable price. I booked the Northern Morocco Adventure tour with Intrepid travel, a company that focuses on responsible tourism. As usual, my travel partner Shea would be coming along on this epic adventure. Unfortunately, things don't always go as planned. A few weeks prior to our scheduled departure, her father fell gravely ill and wasn't given very much time left to live. Shea was very much conflicted with her strong desire to go on this trip but also with the importance of spending every last moment she could with her ailing father. ... read more
