Tuesday. We woke up to better weather, grey skies and windy but dry which got better as the morning went on. Cycling along westwards we were wondering what it is that people rave about on Tiree. However, as the day progressed and we circled the island in sunshine we saw the beautiful coastline with rugged outcrops, wide sandy beaches and turquoise water lapping against the rocks and white sand and realised that here was something special. There was also plenty of birdlife to see with the usual Oyster Catchers, Tewits, Wheatears, Starlings, Snipes, linnets and ringed plovers etc. We also saw several hares playing in the long grass. The buildings appear much different to the previous islands visited with many with high arched felted roofs and several stone built ones with white painted walls like a ... read more

Today we woke up to bright sunshine once again and had a very good leisurely breakfast in our Tigh 'na ' Mara guest house run by Paula, an 'incumden' originally from Carnforth. It was still quite cool and breezy as I walked the village of Aranagour to buy some Lypsil for Bill's chapped lips. I went to the Post Office and gift shop to kill time until the store openened at 10am. The Petrol Station also opened at 9.30 for its two hour stint on four days a week and saw the rush of four cars dash in for fuel. We joined the ferry at 11am for its one hour journey to Tiree. We could see darker clouds to the South and East, which slowly came over Tiree as we landed, making it much cooler but ... read more

Sunday; a pleasant,if short stay, in Connell with an early breakfast and a ride down to Oban for the 9am ferry to Coll. We had all our winter clothes on since whilst it was bright and sunny it was bitter cold with a North wind. We got on the ferry and had a brew to warm us up only for a very Inconsiderate woman to open the door of the saloon to the outside world letting in the bitter cold. I closed the door only for it to be closed again. Not wanting to cause a scene we eventually went elsewhere but never really got warmed up again and landed on Coll feeling almost hypothermic. A visit to the pub for some lunch and we felt much better before setting out to exlore the island. We ... read more

The hills, the hills ! They seem to have taken over from the wind on this very arduous day from Whitehouse to Connell just above Oban. It was climb after climb with a few nasty ones on the road to Seil Island, which is reached by going over the Atlantic Bridge, which has a very steep arch and is very attractive. Unfortunately I could not take a photograph of it for this current blog because I need it to be on this I Pad and we had left our bags holding it in a disused telephone box near the Oban Road. The pub by the bridge is named in Gallic and means 'The House of Trousers' since when kilts were banned on the Scottish mainland the locals used to take off their kilts and change to ... read more

The wind, the wind, ah the wind. Here we go again heading north from Port Helen up to the ferry at Port Askaig. The situation was only made better by the sighting of a buzzard and the pair of Goldfinches bobbing about in front of us for quarter of a mile. We took a short cut heading East and Bill saw a Chough, which is reputed to habit these parts. However, i was just chuffed that my legs did not give up on the long slow climb which must have been almost at the highest point on Islay. Some shortcut. Exhausted with our heads still down we landed in Askaig to get the ferry to Jura with 7 minutes to spare. The lady in the office said it will be going at quarter past so Bill ... read more

Today has seen some excellent weather with clear blue skies, sunshine and two riders with bare arms and legs for much of the day. The journey to Islay took 2 hours and after a quick snack on the ferry we were off at Port Askaig and on our way to Bridgend. It was decided to take a trip to the Loch Gruinart Nature Reserve where we saw our first Hen Harrier and heard a cuckoo. Several swans took off on our arrival which was good to see with their long necks outstretched in front of them as they flew along the ground ahead of us. we are amazed how many people we meet who are, or were, local to us. The volunteer lady at the reserve came from Padiham and we met two yesterday from Chorley ... read more

The weather is getting better by the day. It rained just a little last night but was fine today and with quite a bit of sun. The morning was cold and I had to put on my longs as we got onto the Island of Gigha. The journey to the ferry at Tayinloan, of about 15 miles, was more hilly than Bill had remembered it from last year but it got our lungs working. We continue to see a lot of wildlife and today we saw more Great Northern Divers, Shags and a Buzzard or two, not to mention rabbits everywhere. The island is quite small and the farms a bit untidy but there are two bays in the North, which are quite pretty and overlook the Paps of Jura. The pub serves good snacks at ... read more

We are on the mainland of Kintyre after travelling 55 miles around the Isle of Arran. Our hosts are a couple who Bill has made contact through twitter, living in an Eco house which John has built himself. Sue is an excellent cook and we have been treated like Royalty. Arran is a very pleasant island to visit, as they all, seem to be, and we have seen plenty of wildlife, seals, shelducks, eider ducks, hares, shags, gannets, loads of oyster catchers and many more. The wind is still quite strong but now down to force 4/5 and thankfully mostly behind us today. Holy island was on our list today, but when we got to Lamlash to the ferry we were told it was not running today. However, when we told the ferryman that we needed ... read more

After a good night,s sleep in Rothesay it was off into a serious force 8 gale force wind to the ferry terminal. Lucki Luckily the ferries were still running and crossed over to Wemyss Bay without hitch and might I say very smoothly. They must have a very efficient stabilising system. We cycled down to Largs and had a coffee in Nardinis before being met by two local cyclist who rode with us until 3pm. The first island today was Great Cumbrai which is just about 12 miles around and very picturesque. The only town is Millport, which is a tourist town with nice sandy beach and is home to an annual Country and Western Festival. The sea had cut up very rough when we arrived back at the terminal and we weworse dried the ferry ... read more

Well here we are on Bute having completed our first island. The weather has been glorious with end to end sunshine, but with a strong NE wind. We stayed overnight at a Travel Lodge in Glasgow, which was not the most salubrious. We had to have towels delivered before we could shower and when we tried to shower we could not get any hot water to come through, although the tap was hot. I just love COLD showers. It was better next door at Harry Ramsden's for our evening meal, where they had to have security on the car park the area is that upper class. We took our bikes up the stairs into our bedroom for safety. We had breakfast at the Central Station and the took a very pleasant train to Wymiss Bay before ... read more
