Orange River to Cape Town, 8 September 2012 Up at 4.00am and away by 5.30am, after packing up our tent for the last time. As soon as we left, almost everyone went to sleep in the bus. After 1 ½ hours of driving (and the sun was up by this stage), we stopped at Springbock for coffee and food from Wimpys, a franchise like Hungry Jacks or McDonalds. This was breakfast for some of the group and morning tea for others. Along the way we saw that the wild flowers were out... There were purple, yellow, orange and many shades of green. Often this was seen with a mountainous backdrop. The road was excellent. We phoned ahead, orders for lunch. We ate lunch on the bus because our aim was to get to Cape Town as ... read more

Ngorongoro Crater – 2 August in morning and 4 August We arrived at the camp at the top of the rim of the Crater at about 6.00pm. We took longer than expected because we were following one of our 4x4 vehicles which was toeing another vehicle that was carrying our tents and beds. The 2 nights we were on the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, we had our tents put up for us and we were waited on. However, as the tent vehicle arrived the same time as us, we decided to help them put the tents up so that they could cook out dinner. We could feel the air getting very cold. It ended up freezing, even with the bonfire the guides built for us. So that as soon as we had our dinner (8.00pm) ... read more

On the Serengeti – 2 and 3 August Evening of 1 August- The Snake Park Camp at Arusha was dry and a little dusty. It had a bar, restaurant and a lot of cages where about a dozen African snakes were displayed, including some of the most deadly – black and red spitting cobra etc. The showers were cold (refreshing) and toilets clean – which is an important criteria in a country like Africa. We set up camp and had a shower and then got our overnight bags packed ready for the Serengeti and Ngorogoro Crater for 2 nights and 3 days. On the way we visited the Cultural and Heritage Centre which also was an outlet for the display and sale of Tanzanite, a blue stone that was mined ner by which was the only ... read more

Back to Eldoret, Kenya – 30 July 2012 On the way from Jinja to Eldoret we had the border crossing from Uganda to Kenya. The stamping of our passports to exit Uganda went smoothly. The stamping of them on the Kenya side took a lot longer. There is a ‘no-mans-land’ area in between the 2 countries check points which includes a bridge which is part of a hydro electric scheme. It is against the law to take any photos of the area. There have been a number of times that people in Uganda have wagged their finger at us when we have taken photos of them. We stopped along the way also to have lunch beside the bus/truck. Any leftover food we give to the locals. A lunch stop takes us an hour. We also stopped ... read more

Jinja, Uganda – 28 & 29 July We stopped at Kampala again on the way through to Jinja, to drop off 2 of our fellow travellers from Washington DC. Our cook Simon had to do some food shopping. I was desperate to talk to Kerrie & Adam. It was 10.00pm in Brisbane and so 8.00pm in Perth. My mobile told me I have internet access but the system didn’t work so I found a mobile phone shop and used the retail assistant’s phone to call Kerrie. We only had 10 minutes before our bus was leaving. Kerrie & Gemma answered. It was fantastic (for us) that we could also talk to Gemma, even though it was 10.00pm. Back on the bus I decided to take out my sim card and start my mobile up ... read more

Lake Mburo, Uganda – 27 July We woke at 5.00pm and away by 6.30am for our long drive to Lake Mburo National Park which is located in Kiruhura District in western Uganda. The park is situated about 30 kilometres by road, east of Mbarara, the largest city in the sub-region. This location is approximately 240 kilometres by road, west of Kampala, Uganda's capital and largest city. The roads in Uganda are something to experience (or not!). Many of the road works we came across are being funded by the European Union. Progress is being made. We travelled through several towns and villages, stopping at Mabarabab to access an ATM. We arrived at Lake Mburo at about 2.30 and did a game drive at 3.30pm after setting up camp and looking around at the bar and mini ... read more

Lake Bunyonyi Overland Resort – 25-26 July These 2 days were spent around, on and above the Lake. Lake Bunyonyi is a body of water seven kilometres west from Kabale Town, south-western Uganda. It is 25 km long and 7 km wide, covering an area of 61 square kilometres. The lake's altitude is 1,950 m, and it is surrounded by hills that are 2,200 to 2,478 m high and intensely cultivated. Its 29 islands are concentrated in the central part. These islands have few settlements; they are mostly used for tourist facilities and for a secondary and a primary school. The data on the lake's maximum depth varies; from 44 m to 900 m in parts (although a conflicting sign on the side of the Lake stated that it was 2000m at its deepest). If the ... read more

The Ugandan Gorillas – 24 July 2012 We woke up very excited – even though it was 4.30am!! Had breakfast and the group was divided up into 3 groups (8,8 & our group of 6). Each group was allocated a particular family of gorillas to visit as they restrict the numbers of people observing them. Our family of gorillas was the Nshongi family which consisted of 23 members. We got into a Toyota van and drove for 2 hours to the entry of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park where we were met by local ranges working for the Ugandan Wildlife Authority (UGA). Two English people joined our group. We were briefed by our guide on the rules for visiting gorillas. We had our Gorilla permits and had to show our passports. Permits were $US500 which all ... read more

Diary 6 - Queen Elizabeth National Park We camped at the Simba Camp Site in the Queen Elizabeth National Park, in Western Uganda for 2 nights – 21-22 July. The area had a bar, dining and lounge room, and a variety of accommodation from double rooms, rooms with multiple bunk beds and the tent area. The park covers an area of over 1978 sq kms between Lake Edward and Lake George, around the Kasinga Channel connecting the two. The park has a wide variety of terrain, including volcanic craters, some forming lakes, grassy plains and tropical forest. The Kasinga Channel has the largest concentration of hippos in the world! This park is like a more concentrated version of East African parks as far as animals are concerned, although, unless the mist-shrouded Ruwenzori Mountains are visible, there ... read more
