South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago May 22nd 2011

Our bus left at 7.30am, expecting a 6 hour trip, mainly across the Andes. Wow, what a magnificent trip. The scenery was breath-taking. The Andes are so rugged. Again we saw snow-capped mountains, waterfalls and a large dam. We drove up the eastern slopes in Argentina and down the western slopes in Chile. The border crossing was the most sophisticated with our bags going through x-ray machines. They also had a sniffer dog doing his job. The Chileans are pretty strict with people not taking fruit, meat, milk and wood products over their border. It was very cold waiting for our bags to be checked because we were so high up. After we had crossed the Chile border, we came across a new road which zigzagged down the mountain through 14 hair-pin bends (see photo). ... read more

South America » Argentina » Salta » Salta May 14th 2011

After our train and bus trip we arrived in Salta and settled into our Hotel which was a 10-15 minute walk to the main square. This is the 1st time we have not stayed close to the city centre. Once in the city centre we got our orientation walk from Betzy and noticed all the one way streets and 2 walking malls. There were many shops and good quality goods inside. We walked down San Martin Avenue to the centre. The footpath was wide and level (a little different to Bolivia) and clean. There were a few stalls on the way as well as a small lake, water feature and bridge. Once in Plaza 9 Julio, the main square, Tom and I spotted a coffee spot with outside tables and chairs. It was a beautiful ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Potosí Department » Uyuni May 12th 2011

We arrived in Uyuni after a 6 hour bus trip and settled into our Hotel Samay Wasi. The town is very dry and dusty (white dust) and our hotel is the only 3-story building in the town and is quite new and comfortable. Our guide Betzy took us to a place called Minute Man for dinner which is owned by an American who has married a local girl. They run a slick outfit. There is a Hotel attached. For the first time, we ordered at the counter and paid on the spot. This meant no sorting of money at the end of the night – not that this has been a problem as we all pay for what we have ordered – there is not bill-splitting. Tom and I shared a family-sized pizza – paid 95 ... read more

After an 11 hour overnight bus trip in a fully reclining bus from La Paz t Sucre, we arrived at 7.00am on Saturday 30 April. We took taxi to our hotel which was an old, gracious colonial building which was being renovated. Our room was large with 13-14 feet ceilings. It was a bit ‘tired’ so we understood why they were renovating. We couldn’t get into our room at this early stage of the morning so we went for a walk around the historic CBD of the city. We stopped at a restaurant called Joy Ride for a wonderful breakfast. We then completed our walk back to our hotel where our rooms were ready. Sucre (population about 300,000) is the constitutional capital of Bolivia and the capital of the department of Chuquisaca. Located in the ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz May 5th 2011

We have been our of internet range or the slowness of the network has been at snales-pace in Bolivia so hence you haven't heard from us for over a week. Are you ready for the big catch up as we are now in Salta, Argentina. Pam & Tom On one of the days while in La Paz, a new challenge was before me.... to ride a mountain bike along Death Road which is/was the most dangerous road in Bolivia. Those of you who have seen the TV series “The Most Dangerous Roads in the World” may have seen shots of the Bolivian road. The difference today is that there are hardly any cars on the road as a new road was opened 5 years ago. The company Madness Adventure was recommended to 8 of us who ... read more

South America » Bolivia » La Paz Department » La Paz May 1st 2011

Due to the transport strike, we missed Copacabana and drove straight to La Paz. We got up at 4.30 am to Skype Kerrie and Gemma for her birthday. Connection wasn’t the best but at least we saw them and had a pretty good chat. We are certainly missing them. We had breakfast and then went to the bus station by 5.45am, leaving in one of the very comfy buses for La Paz. We sat up the top floor of the bus which is always a better view. Again, the scenery was spectacular along the way. We were slowed down on many occasions because there were many large rocks on the road. We were wondering if there was a bit of sabotage from the strikers, so prevent vehicles from going to Bolivia. The Peru/Bolivia border crossing was ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Lake Titicaca » Uros Island April 30th 2011

We had great fun riding in a TukTuk to the jetty to catch our boat which was going to be our transport for the next 2 days. Lake Titicaca is a lake located on the border of Peru and Bolivia. It sits 3,800 m above sea level, making it the highest commercially navigable lake in the world. By volume of water, it is also the largest lake in South America. Five major rivers systems feed into Lake Titicaca. In order of their relative flow volumes these are Ramis, Coata, Ilave, Huancané, and Suchez. More than 20 other smaller streams empty into Titicaca, and the lake has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated. Since 2000 Lake Titicaca has experienced constantly receding water levels. Between April and November 2009 alone the water level has sunk by ... read more

South America » Peru » Puno » Puno April 28th 2011

We left Cusco at 8.00 am by one of the very comfy busses which showed movies – helps pass the time away for a 6 hour bus trip. The Peruvian countryside is beautiful. Green plains edged by the Andes, along with seeing many villages. There is more snow on the mountains as elevation is higher. We saw a lot of cemeteries in the villages with some lavish headstones. Much agriculture was seen and the unfinished mud brick homes were always predominant. They are unfinished with steel reinforcing rods sticking out of the building’s roofs waiting for the next floor to be built, but never seems to happen! The main reason is that as soon as a house is finished, they have to pay taxes. One way of not paying ! Puno is a city in southeastern ... read more

South America » Peru » Cusco » Machu Picchu April 26th 2011

This was the day Tom & I have been waiting for, for many years...to see Machu Picchu (MP). We were really excited. I make no apologies for all the photos on this blog!!!!!! We, along with 7 other members of our group, decide to get up early to either be on the 1st bus (5.30 am) to MP or walk up the mountain so that we were amongst the 1st 200 so that we could get a stamp to walk up the Huayna Picchu Mountain at 10.00 am. We decided to walk. So by 4.00 am we were walking up over 1000 Inca-made steps which went straight up whereas the road zigzagged up the mountain. There we were, with head-lamps on, walking in the dark. We had to walk along the road on the edge of ... read more
