Windoek, Namibia, 29 August 2012 We arrived in Windoek at lunch time and booked into our rooms. We then had a pizza for lunch and caught the hotels bus into the city. Tom had a haircut and I found a card and present for Tom. Cards are certainly not a thing that the Namibians do as I had a difficult time finding a card. I also had worse trouble finding a get well card for my little granddaughter, Gemma, who is having her little bent ear corrected on 7 September. I found a DVD with African images and music on it and post cards with African animals for a get well card. We were too late to post the card for Gemma because we got there just after 4.30pm even though the locals said the Post ... read more

Ghanzi and the Kalahari Desert – 27 & 28 August We arrived in Ghanzi at 1.00pm ish to a nice, local village-like camp, near the San Bushmen village, 10 kms outside the town. To see another special features of our trip – and fulfilling another one of my childhood dream – seeing the Kalahari Bushmen who had a ‘clicking’ language (their tongue clicks as they talk), which I learned about in grade 7 and in history in 2nd year high school. We set up our tents on the sand. The upgrade opportunity was a round thatched roof hut with no windows but 1 door. However, on walking around the camp, I came across some very new single room with on suite buildings – but we kept with our tent option. There was a camp kitchen which ... read more

Gweta 22 and 23 August, Okovango Delta & Maun 24 - 26 August We arrived in Gweta in the afternoon after driving over good roads. Even the roads are improving!! Gweta is a small village in Botswana. It lies about 205 kilometres away from Maun and about 100 kilometres from Nata. Generally considered the gateway to the Makgadikgadi Pans Gweta derived its name from the sound of croaking bullfrogs which bury themselves in the sand until the rainy season arrives and they emerge to mate. The huge expanse of the Makgadikgadi Pans is bigger than Switzerland. Once a large river-fed lake, the Makgadikgadi Pans now lie saline and empty. The pans are littered with stone tools and artefacts dated from between 2,000 to 500,000 years old! During the wet season 35-75,000 zebra and wildebeest migrate into ... read more

Kabale and Chobe National Park and River 22 & 23 August After leaving Livingstone at 7.30am after a hot breakfast at the restaurant, with our new group and new guides, we had to travel only 2 hours to the border to Botswana. The border crossing went smoothly even though our guides were not looking forward to it as past times the border crossing has taken 4 hours. Immediately after the border crossing, we crossed the mighty Chobe River by a short ferry ride. The ferry only fitted our truck and one other vehicle. The Chobe River flows into the Zambezi River and eventually flows out into the Ocean through Mozambique. What is interesting about this ferry crossing is that in the middle of the river is the joining of the Zambia, Namibia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe borders. ... read more

Livingstone – 18 – 21 August 2012: is to Zambia what the town of Victoria Falls is to Zimbabwe. Also known as Maramba, it was once the capital of Zambia before it was moved to Lusaka. Livingstone is in the Southern Province of Zambia. We arrived at 1.00pm. It was our plan to arrive as early as possible as there were 4 people leaving the tour, so this gave them 1 ½ days to look around and be involved in some of the activities associated with the Falls.....and there was plenty to do – helicopter and ultra light plane rides over the falls, bungy jumping, flying fox rides and swings, canoeing, white-water rafting, game and rino walks, elephant back rides etc etc. and of course not forgetting to actually walk around the Falls. What did we ... read more

Lusaka, Zambia 17 August 2012: After a 12 hour drive, some bumpy, some not, we drove through a beautiful valley and came to a bridge that we were not allowed to take a photo of, and there was an army guy with a gun there making sure there were no photos taken!! We arrived just before sunset, to the camp site that was actually a wildlife farm. The owner several years ago decided to take in rescued and injured animals. We only saw gazelles, zebras and giraffes. Giraffes are not native to Zambia. Several of our group took their cameras out at dusk and got some lovely photos of the family of 5 giraffes. The bar had a pool table and the England/South African 3rd game of a test match was being screened on the TV ... read more

Lilongwe, Malawi, 15 August We arrived at the Mabuya Camp at 5.00pm which was well appointed with pool (too cold today), bar, WiFi, plenty of showers and toilets and shade trees. The camp was 5 minutes out of Lilongwe city CBD. In the city we went to the ATM which ‘ate’ Tom’s card. Fortunately the bank was opened so we could retrieve it. We stocked up on snacks and drinks. We went to 4 shops and all the shelves where wine was, were empty. We didn’t find out what has happened. We have, however, read in the newspapers that there is a real shortage of Kwacha notes, the local money so banks are offering 36% interest for investers and charge 40% interest for loans. Some economists are saying that businesses are suffering badly and the whole ... read more

Lake Malawi, Malawi – 12 – 14 August 2012 We left the Farm camp by 6.00am to drive south. We drove through a lot of villages stopping for diesel, at one stop, toilets for another and food for another before reaching the Tanzanian-Malawi border at 2.00pm. We apparently experienced the fastest border crossing – 45 minutes. It usually takes up to 4 hours. We all cheered when we heard that. AS were then in Malawi, we turned our clocks back 1 hour. They are on the +2 GMT, now 8 hours behind Brisbane and 6 hours behind Perth. WE arrived at the Chitimba Resort which was right on the banks of Lake Malawi. Although in Africa there is very little concrete paving etc, this accommodation site which was the standard dirt, was all swept and the ... read more

Sorry for the frequency of the Travel Blogs but I am in Cape Town with great internet service!!!! Zanzibar and Driving to the Ruaha River & Iringa 10 – 11 August: After getting up at 5.15am, having breakfast in our room, we were picked up at 6.00am as we had to catch the 8.00am ferry back to Dar es Salaam. We had to go out through immigration on the Island but there was no need to show our visa when we got onto the mainland. The ferry was very fast and the waves were BIG! 5 of our group were sea sick during the trip. I was sitting in the outside section looking backward and I was doing my blog on the computer. When the computer (which was on my lap) nearly ... read more

Travel to Dar es Salaam then Zanzibar 5 & 6 August 2012 After getting up at 4.00am as we were in for a 14 hour trip to Dar es Salaam, we left at 5.00am. We stopped at a picnic area for lunch, which included the obligatory tourist market for tourists which sold paintings, African craft and carvings. We arrived on the edge of the large sprawling city and Marietta told us that we have 2 ½ hours to go to travel very few kilometres. For the 1st time, we experienced the city’s grid-lock. Our driver switched off the truck engine many times, rather than keeping it running. As we had been travelling for 12 hours, the prospect of 2 more hours of travelling without moving very fast, made the first beer and dinner all the more ... read more
