Athens 22 to 25 June 2013 After a 5 hour ferry trip on the fast Sea Jet from Santorini, we arrived in Rafina (the smaller port of Athens) to find our Camper safe and sound. We paid 96 euros for 8 days of parking fees and in another hour we arrived at Camping Athens where we stayed for 3 nights. Athens has been populated for 7000 years so it’s a city of mixed standards. Unfortunately there is graffiti everywhere. The traffic is frantic on work days but we also experienced better traffic on Sunday and the public holiday on Monday. All 3 days we were in Athens it was 35-38 degrees and ‘cooled’ down to 23 at night. It’s reasonably dry heat. We hung our wet clothes out at night and they were bone-dry in the ... read more

Santorini 20 to 23 June 2013 As we sit on the fast ferry back to Rafina, Athens to take us back to our motor home. What a wonderful 8 days we have had. A real holiday. We can see why they label Santorini as the romantic island. We saw several weddings. The people at our hotel Annassa Executive Suits, in the town of Kamari were incredibly helpful with helping us to decide what to do and see during our 3 days on the island. When I was sorting the photos of Santorini I wondered how I was going to choose a few best photos for this blog out of 480 that I had taken (!!!!!), so I apologise in advance at the number I have actually chosen to include. Just quickly flick through them. The evening ... read more

2. Milos Island of Greece 18 to 20 June 2013 After a long and rough (several Asian girls were very sick) ferry ride on the Sea Jet 2,, leaving 45mins late (3.30pm) and going via the islands of Naxos, Koufonissia, Shinoussa, Ios, Santorini and Folegandros we arrived at the port (Adamas) of Milos at 9.30pm, we took the taxi for 300metres to our Hotel Dionisis. We were met by the lovely owner who settled us in to our room. We then went out for a walk and find a bit of dinner. It was a beautiful night, very balmy. The restaurants were lined up on the waterfront. There was even a restaurant that served only deserts – icecream, yoghurts, slices, you name it, they served it. We shoes a place that served gyros and salad in ... read more

Greek Islands 16 to 23 June 2013 1. Mykonos 16 to 18 June 2013 We are in heaven! Perfect weather (hot, cool breezes), hill-top views, killer sunsets, beautiful food, fantastic restaurant, waterside dining for people watching, southern beaches for partying, ATV motorbikes for travelling around (Euro15 for 24 hrs), lovely Greek people, and magnificent accommodation. Do we need anything more – yes, to have the family and friends around would be perfect! We organized our ferry and accommodation after we arrived in Rafina. For anyone who doesn’t want a cruise, fly to Athens, organize the ferry to the islands you want to go to at the Rafina Port – much cheaper! Even if you don’t organize your accommodation on bookings.com before you go, there are many sales people touting for your business re accommodation. So easy. ... read more

Northern & Eastern Coast Greece from 12 to 16 June 2013 Before leaving Ohrid, we spotted a place that was selling bikes so we stopped. I got a very girly bike – very unlike me but it was only to ride around towns after all. They didn’t have one for Tom so that is still on the list. After leaving Ohrid in Macedonia, we headed over the beautiful mountain range to the Greek border. Unfortunately we were challenged by the border authorities again, now on the Greece side. This authoritarian guy said to Tom “I want your International Green card for Vehicle Insurance in paper form”. We hadn’t found a place to print our electronic version. So Tom said “Sorry but we don’t have a hard copy” and again showed him the electronic version on his ... read more

Skopie and Ohrid Republic of Macedonia 10 to 14 June 2013 At the Bulgaria-Macedonia border crossing, on the Macedonia side, we were nearly turned back because we did not have the International Green Card for insurance of the vehicle. In several of the recent countries we have visited (Serbia and Bulgaria), the vehicle is more important than the people, regarding official documentation. We have to show the ownership and registration papers for the vehicle, but additionally in Macedonia we needed the insurance documents. The Customs guy told us we either had to go back to Bulgaria or pay another 480 Euro for Insurance. We knew we had already paid this in The Netherlands. I suddenly remembered I had an email from the person in Holland who we had bought the vehicle through and the email attachment ... read more

Sofia Bulgaria 9 to 10 June 2013 We crossed the Serbia-Bulgaria border with no problems. Our passports were stamped out of Serbia and then paid our 5 euro road tax for Bulgaria and we were on our way. The roads were good between towns but through towns were atrocious. We were given the GPS coordinates for a new Van Park near Sofia, by the last Park Manager. When we arrived, we found lots of Motor homes parked, some owned by tourists and some by the business which we drove in. We learned that there were no showers or toilets and was 12 kms from the city centre. We decided this was not for us so went into the city and stayed at the Sheridan. Bulgaria is yet another eastern European country with a rocky history so ... read more

Novi Sad and Belgrade, Serbia (Srbija) 4 to 8 June 2013We come to Serbia to mainly see 2 places, Novi Sad and the capital Belgrade (Beograd) and learn quickly that it is a country of much to see, beautiful cliff lined River Danube in the north, quaint little country villages, good and terrible roads, friendly people, wide rural regions, with wheat, maize and canola crops as well as row cropping. It is green and has been wet on and off. The River Danube flows down through its centre.Men are prominent in this country (only from an outsider’s observation so we may be incorrect). When we arrive at a local restaurant, particularly in the rural areas, we mainly see men socializing…loudly. We come here a little reticent but leave with confidence that they are trying to improve facilities ... read more

Egar and Budapest in Hungary 2 to 5 June 2013 After saying goodbyes to Slovakia’s northern mountains and the eastern provinces, We drove south, down through Kosice through the border crossing, into Hungary. We decided to take the secondary roads to Egar which was a lovely little town in the middle of the country’s wine industry. This is a popular tourist destination for local Hungarians with its walking malls. We could see the Turkish and Ottoman Rule era influences through the design of their buildings and churches. We stopped and walked around the town and saw beautiful outside dining and cafes with a river running through it. There were cobblestone roads and paths. Worth a stop. Travelling SW to Budapest, we stopped at a service station to buy a 7-day vignette with is like a road ... read more

Slovakia from 30 May to 1 June 2013 Even though Slovakia has had a rough history, it’s a beautiful country with mountains in the north. We are not going to the Capital, Bratislava but concentrating on the mountains. On the 30 May, we arrived later than usual at about 7.00pm, crossing the Czech/Slovac border and travelling 25 kms to Trencin, Slovakia. We stopped at the Na Ostrove Camping which was fair. The important criteria are that the showers are warm, clean toilets and there is power. We got going by 9.00am and to our positive surprise, the road that we thought we were going to travel on was actually a new highway. Our street directory showed that there was a new highway under construction but except for 200 m it was complete. Fantastic! We travelled through ... read more
