South America » Brazil » Amazonas » Manaus June 19th 2011

We arrived at the Manaus airport at 3.00am after a bit of a milk-run, stopping at Belem which is at the mouth of the Amazon and Santarem which is due west of Belem. We were to be picked up by someone from the Hotel but this was not to be! It was obviously too late for them. We caught a ‘taxi’ which did 100kms per hour down a main street. The hotel was not my best choice but the bed was clean and the room had air-conditioning and it was only going to be for ½ a night. The next morning after a cold shower (which was very refreshing in 32 degree heat and 90% humidity) we found a place for breakfast and practiced our Portuguese and hand language (!) which all worked well. We then ... read more

South America » Brazil » Maranhão » São Luis June 17th 2011

We arrived in São Luís at about 8.30pm after a flight with TAM airlines from Salvador via Reciffe where we had a 3 ½ hour stop-over. We also stopped at Fortalaza on the way. We were met by Mike Nelson, who used to be our neighbour on Chapel Hill Road before he and Silvia moved to Brazil. It was fantastic to see them. The last we saw them was on Christmas day last year. Mike then picked up Silvia from the hospital where she was doing some data collecting for her research with the Universidade Federal do Maranhão (UFMA) in the area of Human Resource Management. We had a lot to catch up on. On arriving to their beautiful home, we had a drink and chat and climbed into bed in their air-conditioned guest bedroom. (Thank ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Salvador June 12th 2011

We THROUGHLY enjoyed Salvador! The weather is more like Brisbane's in October and the beaches are nearly as good as in Australia. Having flown in from Rio, arriving at about 2.00pm we caught a bus and travelled for 1 ½ hours to Barra which is a southern suburb of Salvador. It cost 3 Riels ($2.00 Aust) and we later learned it didn’t matter if you travelled 1 stop or for 2 hours, a bus trip always cost $R3. We had picked up a couple of maps from the tourist office at the airport so knew where we were going. We started talking to a Korean girl who was staying at the same hotel so we kept each other company and shared a taxi from where we got off the bus. The Barra Guesthouse which is ... read more

We arrived in Rio and checked into the Apa Hotel which was 2 streets back from the beach. We caught a bus from the airport which took about 1 ½ hours to get to Copacabana Beach. This was recommended to us. Once on the bus we wondered how we would know when to get off!! Tom was befriended by a guy from the USA who was keen to talk, guide and help. He does business frequently in Rio and we learn later that his girlfriend is Brazilian as we ran into them again during our stay in Rio. He told us where to get off and I knew the street to look for so all worked well. He also suggested that we take a bus trip to see the main features of the city, since ... read more

South America » Argentina » Misiones » Puerto Iguazú June 5th 2011

A 1 hour 50 minute flight from Buenos Aires with LAN Argentina Airlines got us safely to Puerto Iguacu in the late morning. We had no trouble catching the bus, direct to our Hotel Garden Stone. The owners of the Hotel were very friendly and immediately went through suggestions on how to approach the day on the Argentine side of the Falls. We were also given a map of the Falls and the town. The Hotel had a pool (cold water so no swimming for me!), outdoor kitchen, many hammocks and areas to sit in the garden. We had a private garden setting outside our room, which we used on several occasions. We found some lunch and then walked around the town as well as finding the junction of the boundaries of the 3 countries, ... read more

We arrived in Buenos Aires at 12.30pm after 22 hours in the bus from Bariloche. It was a full Cama bus so sleeping conditions were good. Pam had a particularly good sleep because I woke up and the sun was up but my watch said 5.40am so I went back to sleep. Next I knew was when Tom was tapping me on the shoulder saying it was time I woke up. I looked at my watch and saw it was still 5.40am. My watch battery had gone flat and it was 10.30am when Tom woke me!!!!! We caught a taxi to our Hotel Splendid which was 8 blocks away from the Plaza de Mayo and 1 block away from the widest street in BA, Av 9 De Julio. The avenue is one of the widest avenues ... read more

South America » Argentina May 30th 2011

We left Ancud at about 11.00am. After hopping on the bus which quickly drove onto the car ferry from Isle Cheloe and across to the mainland. We were about to travel on the most picturesque part of our journey – through the Argentina Lakes District. At Puerto Montt, we changed busses and set out across to Bariloche. I hope the photos give you some idea of the scenery. The area was so green, with dairy cows grazing, new vineyards planted, waterfalls and snow-capped mountains and volcanos. We were a bit disappointed when the sun set. Arriving at around 9.30pm in Bariloche, we certainly felt an added nip in the air from the surrounding snow. We drove to our hotel by taxi to be met by a very friendly owner of Hotel Venize in a lovely ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Chiloé Island » Ancud May 27th 2011

We arrived in Ancud from Pucon, after a 6 hour bus trip, at about 7.00pm We went to Puerto Montt where we caught a ferry onto the Chiloe Island. Once on the Island, we drove to the NW corner to Ancud. It was cold and we soon learned that it rains frequently, in fact 2,500 mm p.a. Just 100 kms south, it rains 4,500 mm per year!!! We were to stay for 3 nights (2 full days) and it rained on and off for these 2 days. The area is also king of fogs. They come over quickly and so the site of the town disappears quickly. We stayed at Hostal Lluhay, which is near the docks at 458 Lord Cochrane Ave. It sits high from the road to provide wonderful views of the quaint ... read more

South America » Chile » Araucanía » Pucón May 24th 2011

Have any of you climbed a snow-covered active volcano??? I haven't so its on the bucket list!!!!! The snowcapped Volcano Villarrica looms majestically over Pucón at 2,840 meters above sea level. Climbing to the top is non-technical and, on clear days, easy. However, we had a couple of extra challenges. We only had 1 full day in Pucon and the weather forecast was rain (which meant snow up on the volcano) and there had already been heavy snow falls during previous days. Thousands of people make the climb each year, most of them in January and February, taking in the spectacular views of Volcans Llaima, Choshuenco, Quetrupillán, Lanin, and Lonquimay in the horizon. However, this was May and heading towards winter!! The plan was that the Hotel owner would wake us up at 6.00am if the ... read more

South America » Chile » Valparaíso Region May 23rd 2011

After an overnight bus from Santiago in a full-cama bus, we arrived safely into the little village of Pucon. What a wonderful, quant little village which had a snow-country (European Alpine) feel about it. We got off the warm bus only to be met by very cold, clear weather. This was definitely coats and gloves and scarves weather! We caught taxis to the Hotel Donde German which had a combustion heater fire in both the lounge and kitchen. It was lined with wood and looked very inviting and homely. We had full access to the kitchen, which we used frequently through the 2 days we were there. The scenery from the hotel was spectacular with the active Volcano Villarrica as a back drop along with the Andean Mountain Ranges – beautiful. Can the scenery get any ... read more
