Nairobi - Lake Nakaru, 18 July 2012 After leaving Nairobi at 8.30am after a briefing from Wilson our Kenyan guide, who is from a coffee farming Kenyan family, we loaded up our bags into the new 4x4 bus. It has a couple of tables in it as well as power. We have a group of 16 of mixed ages. Two people have completed the trip we are just about to commence after this 14-day gorilla trek. They are from Ireland, England, NZ, Copenhagen, San Diego, Switzerland and we are the only ones from Aust. We drove for a couple of hours and stopped for lunch at a beautiful tree-covered picnic area. We had to have several guys on guard as there were baboons there who won’t give up re trying to get food. They can be ... read more

Maasai Mara 3-Day Tour 15-17 July 2012 After a quick breakfast at The Boulevard Hotel in Nairobi, our driver, Steven, picked us up at 7.30am. Steven gave us a quick briefing about the next couple of days and telling us that the road to and in the Maasai Mara National Reserve was very rough. Two months before, they had their heaviest rain for many years, leaving the roads with deep ruts from bogged vehicles. All vehicles had roofs that could be pushed up for excellent animal viewing. I was pretty excited because since Grade 7 and then again during High School history, I had learned of the Maasi People (and their jumping dance), and now I was soon to meet and see them. It took us 5 hours to get to the entry of the Reserve. ... read more

Dubai – 11-14 July 2012 Having left Brisbane close to 3.00am we had a comfortable flight of 7 hours to Singapore. The stopover was only 30 minutes before reboarding for a 6 ½ hour flight to Dubai. I grabbed about a total of 6 hours sleep, with Tom, a little less. We arrives at 2.30pm Dubai-time (7 hours behind Brisbane time). We met a very advanced airport system at the Dubai International Airport although once we got to customs, the system started to slow, taking 45 minutes to get through Customs. The Dubai International Airport is massive, obviously built for future expansion. We learned quickly that that was the case with all Dubai. After getting through Customs, we went outside the terminus and was hit by the heat – beautiful! With an abund... read more

It's 10 hours before we catch a cab to the Brisbane International Airport for a 2.30am Emirates flight to Dubai for 3 nights. The 'to do' list is nearly all done and dusted. It's cold and wet in Brisbane today so look out Dubai (at 45 degrees C), here we come.... read more

We are getting excited about our trip to Dubai & Africa, departing on 11 July 2012. Everything is ready except for the last minute preparations. Here is a map of our trip. What is not included is the path we will take while in South Africa because we are hiring a car and driving ourselves. This will mainly be through the southern part of South Africa along the Garden Route. We will have 3 days in Dubai on the way over, flying into Nairobi, travelling by land down to Cape Town where we pick up a car. After travelling around South Africa, we fly our of Cape Town, via Dubai and back home on 20 September. ... read more

Well we are back in Australia after the most amazing holiday. We have been very lucky to have experienced all that we have and did. We had a really interesting trip home. After leaving Sao Paulo in Brazil, flying out at 5.40pm on the Wednesday, we arrived in Santiago, Chile. Before our departure time to Auckland, there was an announcement that our flight was cancelled until Friday. However, a short while later we found out that LAN Airlines was trying to arrange another solution. This change was due to the volcanic ash from the Chile volcano that was creating havoc for all airlines scheduling, particularly around the NZ area. After a 3 hour wait, we boarded the plane to fly back to Australia via Tahiti. After 9 or so hours, we arrived there only to sit ... read more

South America » Brazil » São Paulo » São Paulo June 21st 2011

We had a 4 ½ hour flight from Manaus to Sao Paul, watching 1 & ¾ movies, arriving at 9.00pm. Sao Paulo is a big city, the 3rd largest in the world after Tokyo and Jakarta. As soon as we collected our bags, we could tell this city was one of the most advanced cities in South America. The bus system alone, from the airport was sophisticated and a well oiled machine. By a mixture of bus a taxi, we arrived at our hotel just before 11.00pm. On settling into our hotel, we were back in thick sheets, bar fridge, hot shower, flat-screen TV, drinking water from the taps and putting toilet paper in the toilet rather than in a waste paper basket. I don’t think I have mentioned this before, but pipes throughout South ... read more

When we were dropped off at our Hotel in Manaus by the Amazon Village guide, Alex, we found they were servicing the air conditioner in our room so we decided to find a restaurant for lunch. We received excellent advice by the hotel and had a pleasant lunch. Manaus is a Brazilian city of about 2.5 million, located on the Rio Negro a few miles before it meets the Rio Solimões to form the Amazon River proper. At Manaus the Amazon rises and falls almost twenty metres between seasons. In May and June it's at its peak, full and very wide, spreading way out into the trees. In November and December it's low but still massive. A bit about the food of Brazil: The Local cuisine is rich and varied and can be found in many ... read more
