Saturday 9 December 2017 After a morning stop in Finnsnes, the ship continued to Tromso, the gateway to the Arctic, for a prolonged stay. At 2.15pm we docked and started our visit to Tromso. Before getting off the ship we saw the Arctic Cathedral across the water, over the bid long bridge, opposite the CBD. We were going to concentrate on the city centre. First was the Christmas Markets in the city square but all the stalls were food based, offering sample of local food. Next was the Polar Museum where we learned the history of seal hunting as well as the exploration of the North Pole. Very interesting. The display included preserved seals, life-size models of explorers and the equipment that was used. We then walked into the main shopping area, briefly stopping inside the ... read more

Crossing Arctic Circle plus Bodo & Lofoten Wall Friday 8 December 2017 The Arctic Circle marks the border to the Arctic region. Today was the day for crossing the Arctic Circle. This occurred about 7.30am. On the land was a lit-up globe which I almost missed but got to take some terrible quality photos of it in the distance!!! We continue sailing along the beautiful coast of Helgeland up to Bodo. Later this afternoon the sight of the 1,000m high Lofoten Wall appeared on the horizon. The charms of the Lofoten Islands were revealed in all the small, picturesque fishing villages with their bohemian atmosphere. Crossing the Arctic Circle is when the hunt for the Arctic light began. We are hoping for clear skies but that might not happen until arriving in Lapland. Stopping at Bodo ... read more

Trondheim Thursday 7 December 2017 The program for the day was to stop at Trondheim from 6.00am to 12 MD. We first had breakfast – you name any food and it was available, including all different sorts of fish, fresh and dried, as well as traditional Aussie food. Next was a walk into town to see the Nidaros Cathedral. We learned from Inger of the history of Trondheim. It’s another pretty town with canals and river as a vital part of life of the city. These waterways made for more spectacular views and reflections, with all the buildings covered with snow and Christmas decorations adding to the sparkle. We walked around the town, remembering the Royal Reception building which is “probably” the largest wooden building in Europe. Unfortunately, it was closed during the winter, but Tom ... read more

Wednesday 6 December 2017 Alesund We were told that Norway’s crowning glory is its fjord heartland, and that travellers are spellbound by soaring mountains, mystical forests stunning lakes and shimmering fjords. The coastline hides remote communities, fishing villages and quaint medieval towns. They said a Hurtigruten voyage is the best way to experience authentic Norway. Sailing alongside the coastline, deep into the heart of Norway’s spectacular landscape and closer to the country’s people and wildlife, was fantastic. From the moment we stepped on board, we were treated to relaxing days, sublime cuisine and the warm company of like-minded adventurers. In the morning we had the chance to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of the Nordfjord. As we sailed past the West Cape we experienced a rare venture into open sea. Then the ship navigated through skerries and ... read more

Monday 4 December 2017 Once at Bergan, arriving at 9.30am, we hopped into a taxi van with a fellow Australian who was doing the same tour as us, arriving at the Clarion Admiral Hotel. We loved Bergen when Tom and I drove there with our motorhome in 2014 so was looking forward to seeing it in the winter. On arrival, we could feel the cold but is was crisp and dry. Our hotel room wasn’t ready but Sheryl’s was, so we used her shower. It felt great after flying for 24 hours. Norway is such a tricky country to get to from Australia. There is no short path! As it was forecast to rain the next day we decided to take the funicular up to Mt Floyen. There was snow everywhere, and the site down on ... read more

Day 18: Kumarakom - Cochin - Australia 5 & 6 October 2017 Today was home time. I decided to do a workout in the gym at the hotel. That was great, even though some of the equipment didn’t work. Unfortunately, they were fixing the pool so there was no swimming allowed. Tom went down to breakfast while I was at the gym. I later went to breakfast and the rest of the day was spent packing and getting our blog and travel diary and photos up to date. We were picked up at 4.30pm by a driver in a car and taken to the Kochi International Airport. This was a 3-hour journey in the peak hour traffic of India. The final cold beer in the airport bar was an opportunity to think about the last 4 ... read more

Day 17: Alleppey - Kumarakom 4 October 2017 Kumarakom is a popular tourism destination located near the city of Kottayam famous for its backwater tourism. Debbie was keen to buy some copper pots and Moran said there might be some for sale in the markets of Kottayam. We parked the van and walked along the busy market street, moving from one shop to another. The results where that we both bought sari material and Deb also found several small copper bowls but sadly, no large ones were found. The men also found a café which sold excellent cappuccino so we all had one, including Mohan. Fishing, agriculture and tourism are the major economic activities in this area. Kumarakom's perfectly balanced tropical climate is very conducive to cultivation. The place has expanses of mangrove forests, paddy fields ... read more

Day 16: Thekkady - Alleppey (or Alappuzha) 3 October 2017 This morning, we drove to Alleppey (130 km/ 3.5 hrs approx). The drive was moving down the tea-covered slopes, again, admiring the scenery the deep valleys offered. Upon arrival, we boarded the traditional rice boat, which offered an on-suite bedroom with fan and air conditioner. It had everything we needed on board – fridge, hot water, dining room, a large balcony above the dining room, a chef, captain and 2 waiters for the 4 of us. Before we got onto the boat, Mohan took us to an alcohol outlet, all of which are owned and controlled by the government. We saw a line of men in front of the non-premium grilled-secured counter, buying cheap spirits and beer. There was also a secured premium wine outlet which ... read more

Day 15: Cochin - Thekkady 2 October 2017 This morning after breakfast, we drove to Thekkady (191 km/ 4.5 hrs approx.). It was another beautiful drive with better roads. There were rubber plantations, coffee trees, pineapples, and as we climbed higher, tea plantations. On arrival to Thekkady, we found a casual restaurant which had a lot of Indians so we knew it would have good food – and it did. After lunch we checked into our hotel. Soon after Debbie and I decided to have a massage on the recommendation of Mohar. It was one of the most ‘interesting’massage I have had. I totally undressed and was put on a firm table on my back and a large amount of heated ‘medicinal’ oil was poured over me. The lady whipped me into shape!!!! I wasn’t comfortable ... read more
