Europe » Spain » Canary Islands » Gran Canaria February 1st 2009

we arrived in Gran Canaria without any problems and, failing to find public transport to Aguimes, we took a taxi. It is not all that far. This is a very pretty town with some very strange statues. There is naked woman playing the cello who has a tape recorder inside her so she can broadcasr music (which doesn't all have cello in it), there is a donkey and a camel (the camel is right beh9nd our hotel room) and a dancing couple where he is dressed as a woman and he is dressed as a man. There is poetry on many walls. Today we went walking. We went uphill for about four hours. There were many lizards and birds of prey. The view from the end of the road was stunning. It took less than 3 ... read more

We headed out from home at 18:00 Friday. The M4 was totally blocked. We left at Reading and headed up the A4, making Marlborough at around 9:15. We were later told that shortly after we got off the M4 the police closed it. Having missed dinner at the Sun Inn we headed out for Italian food. I had a stinking cold. Back in the room, discovered I had bought the recharger for the Eee but not the bit that adapts it for use with UK plugs. Today, after an excellent breakfast, we headed for Savernake Forest which is truly spectacular. We just wandered around, looking at ancient oaks and beeches. Some of the more ancient oaks have names and others do not. It was warm and sunny and still. We hardly saw anyone. I would highly ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Ayvalik September 25th 2008

The trip from Foca to Ayvalic was mainly uneventful. Most of it on a very good, modern highway. We didn't find a wireless connection in Ayvalic although, to be honest, we didn't look too hard. Ayvalic is serious relaxation. Well, apart from the traffic which is terrifying. We finally found a place to park the car then a hotel where no English was spoken (very good for my Turkish and my confidence in using it). After settling in we walked to the causeway to Ali Bey Island then back which made most of the taxi and dolmus drivers think we were crazy. We just wanted to see that area which is where many of the cheaper properties are. We had ayran and shared an Ayvalic tost (a very mixed tostie with many nice things in it) ... read more

We are in Foca as I write although we have had problems establishing wireless connections here. The drive from Mordogan was pleasant then Industrial then we missed the turning and it got a bit scary, then we found our way back and after more industrial and roadworks it got OK. The side road from the motorway is pretty. We have both taken a liking to Foca - this is ancient Phocea... It has a working fishing fleet including trawlers and several schools. It is a 'real' place and not a resort. It is also pretty and very friendly. (Oooh the 'you can eat now' firework just went boom). The weekly market was today and it's huge and lively. We could live here. Today we drove to Yeni Foca 22km up the road. The drive was spectacular. ... read more

Middle East » Turkey » Aegean » Izmir September 21st 2008

After breakfast we made ur way slowly by foot and public transport to the airport for a very hassle free flight to Izmir. Drama ensued as the hire car firm told us that the agent had cancelled our booking due to a problem with our payment (for which I have a receipt) but we could have a car if we paid the directly. I phoned the agent and within ten minutes the misunderstanding between the agent and the hire firm was cleared up. Took a bit longer to get the car and I will need to watch my credit card transactions carefully for a while. We set off in this virtually brand new Clio. The motorway was easy enough but the last 20 Km to Mordogan is on a virtually unmade surface with some dramatic drops ... read more

We took a trip out to the Istanbul Harley Dealership. It was OK. They had no dealer shirts my size, a pity, they were expecting new stock to arrive soon . Got some goodies anyway, a HOG Istanbul pin badge and the HD Turkey guide including maps and stuff, this book will be great for we we enter Turkey on the Harley next summer. I also found this. http://www.grandrun.fr These guys are doing 12 day supported rides in some amazing places. One ride starting in Trazbon, Turkey, doing the silk road to Baku on the Caspian shore, and back, a little over 3000 km. Thy are also doing a ride through Sub Saharan Africa, Mali, Burkino Faso, and Niger, again with support vehicles. For both of these they fly you out from France and ship your ... read more

We were quite successful in the spice market. We picked up what we needed and avoided temptation to buy what we don't need. It is mildly irritating that the shop people think they know what tourists will buy and won't listen to what we actually want. Less success with my course books. I have been offered a number of texts on learning Turkish but not the one I need. This does not entirely surprise me. We totally failed at not buying a kilim. We have bought a very nice kilim. Hasan treated us to dinner. Mostly, though, we have just been drifting around the city which is so beautiful. Tomorrow we fly south where the weather is still hot. Istanbul is not cold at present, but I've bee wearing a light jacket all day and it ... read more

It is hard to believe we were in work yesterday. Arrived Istanbul not much before midnight. booked into hotel. Had a couple of beers in Just Bar then back here with a few cans to enjoy the view and watch Harry Potter movie dubbed into Turkish. today we went to the local Harley dealership and bought a pin badge. We walked back to Sultanamet and met with Hassan. Then, after chatting a long while, we walked through the hippodrome which, in Ramadan, reminded us both of Marrakesh. Then dinner and back to Just Bar for drinks. The power was down and watching the power lines get fixed was a very popular entertainment. On the terrace of Hotel Pem now with more to say but having huge keyboard problems in the dark. Will update when I can ... read more

We left Porlock this morning with a few drops of light rain but this stopped pretty soon. It was a really nice ride on the A358 through the Quantock Hills to Taunton, this a good road for bikes. Then across to the A303. Mostly we went fast on the A303, it still has a few bottlenecks, but equally some nice riding and great scenery across the Salisbury Plain. I did contemplate stopping at Stonehenge, but it was heaving with tourists. So instead of pictures, here are some links. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salisbury_Plain http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stonehenge Going fast was good. Almost exactly 4 hours after leaving Porlock we arrived home. ... read more

Europe » United Kingdom » England » Somerset » Porlock August 24th 2008

After breakfast it was raining. We were disinclined to stay in our hotel. If you ever go to Porlock, go to the Ship and not the Castle. The Ship is a fine Inn and it has Otter beer which is excellent, not to mention local. It also has a lack of Elvis impersonators and thumping cheesy disco till the early hours. Which is more than can be said for the Castle. Anyway, we took a stroll whilst deciding what to do and, very swiftly, I spotted an open top bus. We ran for it. It was going to.. Lynmouth. We got on and went upstairs where we became intimate with some wet trees. We went up onto Exmoor and when we seemed to have gone as up as possible we asked the bus to stop and ... read more
