Back to civilization again, unfortunately. We had an amazing trip to the most amazing beach I have ever seen or could have imagined. Tayrona is a national park located on the north Caribbean coast. We took a bus into Santa Marta and found a connecting bus to Tayrona on Monday afternoon. Since we heard that food prices are outrageous (quite true) we brought some standard backpacker diet staples of doughy white bread, peanut butter, granola and beef jerky. All the Aussies and Kiwis give us crap until they try it in all of its deliciousness. You´re welcome, Sean. After an hour or so hike that we dominated if I might say so myself, we came to the first beach of the park, but it wasn´t good for swimming and my Colombian stalker recommended another one farther ... read more

Happy 4th of July!! I suppose I chose and odd place to celebrate it, but what can you do? One of the bars in town is actually having a 4th of July party- nice! We went there last night and met these crazy Colombians who were absolutely fascinated by gringos (even though the town is flooded with them). They took a million photos of us and were videotaping us dancing with them. Make sure you keep yous eyes peeled for the latest YouTube sensation- Gringos Gone Wild! I am currently in Taganga which is a small beach town on the north coast, about 100 (?) miles west of Venezuela. It´s touristy but like I said most of the tourists are actually Combians on vacation. This morning I dove with the shop Calypso for cheap, about $50 ... read more

All I can say is wow. Yesterday started off so innocent, with a stroll through the old city. Great colonial buildings and some nice little museums and cafes. The Aussies turned out to be insane...fun to hang out with for a while, but their never ending quest to find rock got old. I wound up meeting a group of Americans from Colorado and before I knew it 10 turned to 12 turned to 4.... yikes. Feel like I´m in college again! When we finally left the bar at 4, there was an insane downpour that flooded all the streets and we returned to the hostel to find an inch of water inside. Our room was on the 2nd floor but leaked like crazy and the power went out so we didnt even have a fan. Ugh. ... read more

Hey guys! Just wanted to let you all know that I´m here in Cartagena. The flight was fine and I actually wound up meeting an American guy in the line for customs and his friends from Baranquilla gave me a ride to a nice hotel outside of town. The were really nice and took me out to dinner and chatted with the family for a while. Worked out quite well! This morning I walked around on the beach for a while but it was cloudy and rainy so I headed into the Old Town part of Cartagena and found a hostel a little closer to the action. I checked into the place at the same time as some Aussies and have apparently found my new clan for the evening. We are planning to take a double ... read more

I can't begin to speak of the recent changes in my life. Being unemployed is very new to me and a little nervewracking, but I suppose it won't be hard to get used to once my feet hit the Caribbean sand. Though I am almost packed and will be embarking on my journey in less than 24 hours, I think I am still a bit in shock mode. I think excitement is still my #1 emotion, though I definitenly go through times of apprehension and panic. Thankfully these are few and far between. For all of those wondering, no, I haven't gone crazy and I'm not trying to rebel against anything. I got bit by the travel bug as a young child (thanks Dad & Mom!) and I hope I will never get that out of ... read more

I'm back in San Pedro Sula after 2 long years away. I had forgotten how much I truly enjoy this country and all it has to offer. One look out at the vista from our 3rd floor balcony this morning was all it took to get my adrenaline going once again. After a delayed flight and long Customs line, I finally got out of the airport aound 2 am, only to be met with a flat tire while trying to make it back to Brent's neighborhood. Naturally, the spare was no good, so our driver phoned one of his taxi driving friends who came by to save the day with a spare. It took a while, but better late than never! When we got back to Brent's place, I was feeling slightly refreshed from my nap ... read more

Hello again! One last post before we head out to dinner and some discos tonight. Well, our stay in the Tela area has been interesting to say the least. We spent Wed. night at the Mango Inn which was a nice hostel in istelf, but set off a really noisy street which thankfully quieted during a crazy thunderstorm, but started up again at about 3 when the rain stopped. Ah well. We got up early and went next door for breakfast which wasn´t bad. When we finished, a woman came in with a bag, trying to sell what was inside. We noticed it was moving and asked her if we could see. It was a huge turtle!! She was trying to get the restuarant to buy if for soup!! She wanted 200 Lempira ($10) which was ... read more

Hi everybody. Well, if you haven´t realized it yet, we´re doing fine. The hurricane hit the Nicaragua-Honduras border which is inhabited by small tribes people so it was probably the best place to hit in terms of population size. The islands were clear out of the way by the time we made it to the brewery (go figure) but it was great there anyway. The first day we went to the falls which was so spectacular that we went back later on the second day. Earlier in the morning on the second day we toured the Lago de Yojoa via rowboat which was very tranquil (aside from one of our boatmates geting sick over the side and Mike´s 30ft plunge into the water off one of the climbing points). All in all we had a great ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Honduras » Western » Lake Yojoa September 4th 2007

Hi everybody, thanks for the messages. We´re doing fine, we´re at Lago de Yojoa now at the D &D Brewery which is very nice. It´s owned by a guy named Bob who moved here from Oregon and started a microbrewery and lodge. We had a nice cabin last night, but may need to switch to a room today as a lot of people were coming out here because of the storm. As you probably know Hurricane Felix hit Nicaragua today as a Cat 5 and will be down to a tropical storm today if it isn´t already. It had been predicted to hit the island Utila where we were up until yesterday when we left and came here. Now it looks like the lake will be getting more rain than the island! Figures. The island was ... read more
