Early start at 06:30am for a 50 km Tuk Tuk ride with T to Banteay Srei and Kbal Spean. Banteay Srei was a small temple with unusal pink stones and marvellous carvings. After half hour tuk tuk drive (another 18 km) we arrived at Kbal Spean. Had breakfast at the local shack and took 2km trek to the top of the mountain. Cannot describe the sounds and smells of the jungle other than: come here and feel it for yourselves! At the top of mountain we found the first stone carvings after a little bit of disappointment an Australian who had been there before directed us in the right path as we had to boulder hop down the stream to see the carvings. It was a magical moment to see the carvings under the water, the ... read more

Nat got up for an early swim at 07:30am while Mark snored. Eventually we made our way via the Pagoda (in western terms it would be considered local Budhist church) called Wat Pron Rath. We walked along Tonle Sap River and went to the Angkor National Museum. This was the most amazing museum we have visited: informative and simple in its presentation. After a 4 hour visit we returned via local streets and watched locals play volleyball, Mark then sniffed out a 50c per pint bar the one no doubt he'll be returning on a regular basis. We met up with Phillipe at the hostel and went for a meal to T's recommended local market restaurant. Food not so good, but getting to know Phillipe was wonderful. A great day!... read more

Got up at 04:30 am and went back to Angkor Complex to witness our first sunrise across the man made lake called Sras Srang. As we arrived at Sras Srang we were approached by 2 young girls aged 8 and 9 years. "Do you want coffee Mister?" "Madame do you want to buy some of my scarves?" "Please come have some of my coffee" "It's very early to drink anything right now, perhaps later" we replied. They insisted and it was ever so hard not to engage with them as they took every opportunity to practice not only their selling skills but also their English. They were enchanting, and yes, Mark had coffee and I bought batteries. For them this was a good day at the office. After a beautiful sunrise, we went to Banteay Kdei ... read more

Rest day. Chilling by the pool all day. We decided to spend a day visiting places and a day relaxing on an alternate basis. After a long hard day at the swimming pool we felt the immense need to treat ourselves to a nice meal. After an intense search in the Lonely Planet book we took up their suggestion of the Sugar Palm restaurant. It was a bit out of the way to find it but man oh man was it worth the effort!! Starters: Khmer fish cakes and spring rolls (not the fish cakes from Tesco nor spring rolls from the local chinese) followed by fish Amok which took 40 minutes to cook. I had a Caipirinha and Mark Angkor beer. We found out that Gordon Ramsey had trained there, a bit pricey but the ... read more

At 08:00am we set off to Angkor. We bought a 7 day pass and 20minutes later we had arrived at Angkor Complex. Nothing on earth could have prepare us for the beauty before us. We both felt emotionally touched by the grandiosity and splendour before our eyes! It's impossible to describe the size, the number of Temples, its civilizations and culture and reason for this entire Complex. Anyone reading our blog we advise that you seek more information of this wonder of the world. First we went to Angkor Thom complex some 10 sq km in size surrounded by a 50 m wide moat built in 1181-1219. We visited the Bayon, the famous temple of many faces, then the Baphuon, then we went into the Royal Palace, the Terraces of the Elephants and of the Leper ... read more

Reason to be in Siem Reap: to visit Angkor Temple Complex, but not today. We spent the whole day by the pool doing NOTHING just reading, sleeping, eating and drinking. We arranged with T to be picked up tomorrow to go to Angkor Complex. In the evening we walked to the city centre and stumbled into the Water Festival. The streets were beautifuly decorated (just like Christmas) and in the middle of the Tonle Sap River there were candles flowing down the river. These candles were adorned with local flowers and offreings such as food, and were placed on the river by families. Some candles would not flow from the river bank so we saw some child 'entrepeneurs' charging a few riels (local currency) to swim them out to the centre of the river. We wondered ... read more

Another adventure began. Tuk tuk to bus station for 2 dollars. Took a 7 hour bus journey to Siem Reap for 6 dollars each. It was wonderful to get out of the city and to begin to see the countryside and how the Khmer live. The beauty was stunning: very green with palm and cocanut trees and other vegetation, water buffalos, houses on stilts, children swimming where buffalo lived, enourmous rice fields and generally a wonderfull comfortable trip. Tuk tuk was waiting for us at the bus station. We met T who drove us to Siem Temple Villa hostel. After a swim in the pool we went for a Khmer meal at the Khmer restaurant and slept like babies!... read more

Mark was craving for a full English breakfast after only being away for 3 days! His Khmer "English breakfast" consisted of: 2 lovely fried eggs, something that resembled a sausage, 2 strips of raw meat (we assume bacon) and 4 baked beans on toast, not 4 portions of beans, but yes, 4 beans on toast :-) We then visited the Genocide museum S-21. This used to be a school that was used and transformed by the Khmer Rouge in 1975 to interrogate, torture and kill men, women and children. We felt humble and so ashamed to be human beings, how can these atrocities happen? Tuk tuk to the central market to purchase a few provisions for the trip ahead and went to a trendy young Khmer restaurant. We were the oldies there but who cares? As ... read more

Got up, I (Nat) didn't feel well and headed straight to a pharmacy, alka seltzer was in order! Caught a tuk tuk by the main tourist front, Riverside, gazed at the Tonle Sap river which was flowing very fast. The river was full of litter, the surrounding area smelt of carbon monoxide and many unidentified smells many of which not at all pleasant. We weren't very impressed with Riverside, too many foreigners and lots of beggars. We walked along the river front, stumbled accross a Buddhist Temple complex (we didn't realize what it was until we were sitting in a lotus position being blessed by a monk and had to donate a dollar to Buddha!). Next stop was the National Museum and Library. Here began our education of the Khmer people, their history, struggles, religion and ... read more

After a 23 hour flight we slept most of the night and woke up to the unbearable heat and the noises of tuk tuks and chickens, and people...we ventured outside and were amazed to find a city full of life and lots of mopeds! Hardly anyone walking, only us two foreigners! We walked to the Russian Market and we felt overwhelmed by tuk tuks, cars, bycicles, motorbikes from all directions, and litter everywhere. Crossing the road was an extreme sport :-) It was very hot and crumped inside the market, we bought a couple of T-shirts and walked around for some more and decided to chill out at a restaurant where our exoctic culinary experience began. I had a lovely light soup with rice and Mark had a spicey beef with rice and of course, Angkor beer! ... read more
