Today was another massive day for us! We got picked up from our hotel by our driver and guide and headed out to see the modern parts of Rome (tomorrow we do ancient Rome). We saw so many things today so I'm just going to talk about the highlights. One of the things we saw was an old church. It looked very plain on the outside and it's something we would have walked straight past and not bothered to look in. But the inside was amazing! There were beautifully painted roofs and sculptures. One of the sculptures was of Moses, unfortunately the translation back in the days wasn't too accurate as some of the words were quite similar, so instead of Moses having a halo, they sculpted horns on him instead (as seen in a lot ... read more

This morning we had a bit of a sleep in, we had breakfast we bought from the supermarket in our apartment and then went for a short walk around Rome. We then had a coffee at our favourite place and scored some free biscuits! After our coffee we started our first tour where we went to Vatican City. So technically we went to a different country today! We met our tour guide Flavia Pompeii (very Italian), she picked us up from the apartment and then took us to Vatican City. The city was amazing, we managed to skip the line and get in there quickly, but we got held up outside the museum as it was blocked off as the Pope had decided to use the Sistine Chapel for a few hours. We were finally allowed ... read more

This morning we had a bit of a sleep in (besides the bells waking us up again!) then we had to wrestle against an American lady to get a table for our buffet breakfast (there was so much competition at 8.30am!). After we'd won the battle for the breakfast table we then went shopping (yay!). After our morning of shopping we went to the train station and made our way to Rome. We got the train station early this time so had time so bit more time to relax. We then took a 1.5hr train ride to Rome, where the train did over 248kms/hr. When we got there we took a taxi (first time taking a taxi) to our apartment where we were going to meet Jacquie and Pete (Blair's parents). We were so excited because ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Florence May 4th 2016

This morning we found out that the bell tower right next door goes off at 7 am. ...so no sleeping in for us! In the morning we went inside the cathedral next door and got to see the inside of the duomo which has a beautifully painted roof. We'd planned to see the real statue of David but the line was too long so we did a bit of shopping instead. Later we did a wine tour in Chianti which has the beautiful picturesque hills of the tuscan region. The wine is amazing and Chianti has over 400 vineyards and is one of the oldest wine regions in the world which makes this area famous for its wine. Our bus driver was amazing as he had to drive around the windy, narrow roads and deal with ... read more

Sorry for the late post, we didn't have any internet! We are still alive!!! Anyway this morning we got up really early to catch the train to Florence. The hotel staff said it would take about 10-15mins to get from the hotel to the train..... but we found out you would have to be sprinting with no luggage to actually make it in that time! So we almost missed the train this morning based on that info, we just made it but we were covered in sweat and were out of breath. The bridges are beautiful and easy to use in Venice, except when you have large amounts of luggage to carry/lift up over multiple bridges, then they turn into you're worst nightmare! Anyway we managed to get on the train and made it to Florence. ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice May 2nd 2016

This morning we woke up early and took a boat to Murano which is one of the islands in Venice. It was pouring with rain so I bought a lovely bright blue poncho on the way which worked really well, but may have not been the classiest thing to wear in Italy! Murano is famous for it's glass artwork. We saw a demonstration of how they made their glass by either blowing into it to make the vases or moulding the hot glass to make different sculptures. Their glass work is amazing and you have to be very skilled to do that type of work. We bought our first piece of artwork on Murano which is a little elegant twisted glass sculpture. We looked at a few others as well, our favourite piece was a beautiful ... read more

This morning our room flooded in Venice! Not because of a high tide though, our shower didn't drain properly and it was so bad that it started to enter our bedroom. The hotel staff were really good though and they fixed it and cleaned it all up while we had our breakfast. It was raining this morning and there is already a huge difference in the water level in the canals compared to yesterday. So in the rain we headed out to the bell tower in St Mark's square. We'd planned to walk up but the only option was to take the lift. We got to the top and had a great view of Venice, all the roofs have orange tops and the beautiful cathedrals stood out everywhere. The bells then started to go off while ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 30th 2016

We had a big day today exploring Venice! This morning we had our buffet breakfast at our hotel (which we took advantage of!) and then started a walking tour around Venice. Our guide took us around all the parts of Venice that we probably wouldn't have got to see or know the significance of if we'd done it by ourselves. We went over the famous Rialto Bridge, walked through the local market place and visited many courtyards. We learnt that if a street name contained Rio, it used to be a canal and that Venician is a different language from Italian and when they tried to change the names to Italian spelling, the locals crossed out the extra letters to change it back. There are many pictures and sculptures of lions on the buildings around Venice ... read more

Europe » Italy » Veneto » Venice April 29th 2016

Today was just a travel day. Our hotel in Lugano was in a great place, right in the middle of the shops and restaurants. Lugano looks over a lake and has very beautiful gardens and fountains surrounding the lake. But unfortunately the train station we had to go to in the afternoon is up a massive hill....not a hill you could do easily carrying two suitcases. So we took the bus up to the top of the hill and headed to Milan and then Venice. Before we caught the train though I bought some swiss chocolate as I told blair I cannot go to Switzerland and not try some swiss chocolate! (There is no way a chocoholic like me is not going to miss out on that experience!). The train ride was ok, they switched one ... read more

Europe » Switzerland » South-East » Lugano April 28th 2016

Today we travelled through the Swiss Alps by train from Chur to Lugano. The train ride we took was a scenic train called the Bernina express. It is the most beautiful train ride I have ever taken with some of the best views I've ever seen in my life! This is the part of Switzerland I've been looking forward to the most, it it definitely did not disappoint! We have beautiful snowy mountains in New Zealand but this was completely different. The mountains the train went up and through were massive. Some of the train ride was lower so you had the beautiful green grass with the snowy mountains in the background, and as we went up it became more snowy until it was completely covered in snow (and by then we were up in the ... read more
