Frankfurt is exactly what I like in my travels: a cool places with great people. After Berlin, Frankfurt and it's (-2) to 2 was nice, warm and welcoming. I could wander around the streets!! and I did, enjoying the churches and renovated buildings without the need to worry where is the next warm place I could protect myself... I even went to the Museum to watch Botticelli's art exhibition and could line up (with dozens of others) for 30 minutes in the open air and enjoy it!! oh, BTW, in Berlin I've visited “the Picasso story” (can't get the website working, google it..) and it was great, most recommended and it's great for kids too... enough with the culture thing, people might get the wrong impression of me! I met some great people in Frankfurt. Alexander, ... read more

Sachsenhausen is Berlin's concentration camp that was the model camp that set the standard for those to follow (The famous sign over Auschwitz read "Arbeit macht frei" which means "Work liberates", is a copy of the one in Sachenhausen). The camp was used primarily for political prisoners of the Nazi Regime and, after the the end of the Second world war as a soviet secret service (not only the service was secret but also the camp). I have decided to go there on a group tour. Don't know why. Maybe I was too lazy to plan, maybe I was too scared (it was my first time), Maybe I just didn't want to be alone. Visiting the camp, in this freezing weather, taking the walk from the train station through the village to the camp, looking at ... read more

everyone can tell you how amazing Berlin is. Everyone can talk about the amazing architecture, the parks, the courtyards, the streets, the history, the nightlife. I'm not everyone very loyal to my decision to travel in difficult (challenging?) conditions I have decided to head to Berlin, again, in the coldest winter in 20 years. I remember having a previous and a wiser decision: never again to spend summer in Israel, never again winter in Europe. I don't know what happened to this decision and how I found myself in Europe in winter time. Short memory is one answer. Simply arrogance (“there is nothing I can't do. But mountains.”) would be the other. I have to admit it: -10 Celsius are below my comfort zone. My comfort zone is somewhere 25 degrees above.. the first thing I ... read more

The best thing about Italy There are few things I like about Italy. My friends, the language, the food, the cheese, the landscape, the trips, the towns, the churches, the history, the feeling I live in a movie. But the best thing ever is the fact that it's the only country, but Israel, I can present myself and saying my name to whoever I meet and people would remember it. Merav is a short for Meraviglia, marvelous in Italian. Everywhere I go I have to find ways to make people remember my name: in East Africa I was called Mzuri, the best translation I could find. In Ethiopia I was Meraf, chapter. A very important word and a man's name (took me 7 weeks to find out that Merav exists in Amharic, meaning west...) The Americans ... read more

I got back to Israel few weeks ago. I spent the first 10 days almost isolated and asleep, taking antibiotics to treat a blood infection caused by beg bugs, now I've started waking up and still can't answer this question. Ethiopia was the most complex country I have visited. It's amazingly beautiful, It has interesting and important culture and history, It drained my energies. I can't place the finger on what exactly was so difficult. I think that it was a mix of not feeling well most of the time, being hassled by people whenever I walked the streets, having unexpected problems with the food and seeing this amazing country being so neglected. It made me so sad I had closed myself to everyone. I still can't open up. I think that one of the basic ... read more

Simien mountains are amazing mountains in northern Ethiopia. The highest pic is at 4,543 Meter. Its a nice few days hike, sleeping in huts, amazing landscape, endemic flora and monkeys. fun. I was sure that my ridiculous altitude sickness would be controlled, thanks to modern medicine, so I've decided to hike. the first day was easy - the driver drove, the cook cooked, all I had to do was to relax and get used to the altitude. So I did. I've even took a short walk, and found myself (as usual) sitting and admiring the amazing green mountains... dinner, bonfire, and off to bed. it was 22.00 and I was exhausted.. The morning after, the hike had started great - it wasn't difficult, the mountains were amazing, a group of male Gelada monkeys was sitting together ... read more

What a great name to a great community... we found some info in the guide: It's a small community, isolated, secular, believes that education is the key to development so one can find adults attending primary school, they are socialists, they believe in Gender equality and children’s rights, the kids are not allowed to beg money from foreigners and visitors, the community charges the same price from locals and Faranji (white people) and the best way to support them is to buy the woven products they sell. We read, we were amazed, we thought it's interesting and surprising so we go on the bus. OH YEAH!!!! I'm inlove!!!! Yes, my next trip to Ethiopia is planned!!! AWRAMBA I have to check that they really stand for what they declare. They are not secular, they believe in ... read more

We've made it to southern Ethiopia and the Omo valley, to visit the famous tribes. After the long trip south we have decided to rent a car and driver hoping to enjoy the tour. We found out that the roads are a lot better when u travel with your own car. bull jumping ceremony We felt very lucky. We've heard that there is gonna be a bull jumping ceremony. The ceremony is conducted by the hamar people and is the symbol of the transformation from kids to men. After the ceremony they are becoming MEN and are allowed to choose a woman and get married. The ceremony was fascinating: It starts with everyone in the village getting prepared: the women apply fresh butter and mud mixture on their hair, the men are applying colors on their ... read more

3 days and 350 KM ago I wanted to see the country, I wanted to get to know it better, I wanted to speak to locals I meet on the bus, I wanted to ride trucks to remote villages and stay there for a while, I wanted to travel the hard way as I am used to, I wanted to take my time and know everyone and everything. 3 days and 350 KM later, the only one I wanna know is a pilot. ... read more

Spending a week in Ethiopia, I believe that this is the most important thing to learn. Saying it should be mandatory as a visa application requirement, along with payment and a photo. Ethiopian Airlines should brain wash the passengers, one should never set a foot in Ethiopia without the basic knowledge of how to say “NO BURNING SPICE!!” my mouth is constantly num, the food is so tasty but then it bites back, burns the inside of your mouth and the lips and then you feel almost nothing… It’s funny to see us taking the first bite, counting to 3 and starting to cry and drink water (which, of course, makes it feel a lot worse…) Now I understood why the drink the tea with 6 spoons of sugar! why can’t they understand that if the ... read more
