Spending a week in Ethiopia, I believe that this is the most important thing to learn. Saying it should be mandatory as a visa application requirement, along with payment and a photo. Ethiopian Airlines should brain wash the passengers, one should never set a foot in Ethiopia without the basic knowledge of how to say
“NO BURNING SPICE!!” my mouth is constantly num, the food is so tasty but then it bites back, burns the inside of your mouth and the lips and then you feel almost nothing… It’s funny to see us taking the first bite, counting to 3 and starting to cry and drink water (which, of course, makes it feel a lot worse…) Now I understood why the drink the tea with 6 spoons of sugar! why can’t they understand that if the food would be less spicy life would be easier? They say that it keeps your body strong and healthy. It sure does keep my alerts on - always looking for the spicy bits…
So far Ethiopia is amazing, we’ve only been to a short trip (122 KM in 4 hours, one broken alternator belt and one flat tire) to Ambo and Wonchi Lake, the
area is amazing, it’s green, cultivated, lots of farms all over, and for it’s HUGH!! It looks like a bit of Uganda and Rwanda only A LOT bigger… the Crater Lake is beautiful, the road there got lots of points on the “worst road” competition, but it’s worth it… this adventurous day trip made us TV starts here in Ethiopia, we got interviewed by “TVO” for a TV program, a promotion for local tourism in this area. So, if you can get the Ethiopian National TV, it’s going to be on air next Saturday 5.09.09 at 21.15 Israel time. Of course, we expect job offers, TV starts extras (like running hot water and non spicy food) I have already started practicing signing my name in Amharic. Oh, about my name: I found another Nationality but Israelis and Italians that find my name relatively easy - The Ethiopians. Meraf is “chapter” in Amharic so my name is relatively accepted here...
This trip to Africa is a lot different then the first one:
• I don’t have the cultural shock I had last time - “everyone are black”. It’s obvious…
• I am not alone and so far it’s great. Thos who
know me knows that “SO FAR” is a key word here
• They have great coffee… If most of my East African days had started with a coke for breakfast, my Ethiopian days starts with “espresso please” and a happy smile
As usual, I have to apologize to all of you I didn’t get to talk to or say goodbye before I left - from one hand the last 10 days went crazy, as usual, on the other hand, it’s my first trip with a dead line so I didn’t take goodbye that seriously..
oh... it starts raining again... to be continued
