As has become the norm, let me flip back to yesterday. Dinner was at an Italian restaurant (pizza) and then, at Jeff's suggestion, we went back for another crack at the Go-Karts. I had tried to convince him for another round when we were there earlier in the day but it obviously took a bit of time for the "fun factor" to sink in for him and want some more. This time we were on the track with two others which makes for a bit more manoeuvring on the track. We both improved our lap times from the afternoon and it was just as much fun as the first time. Back at the hotel we made use of the sauna and as we returned to our rooms we heard fireworks outside being let off over the ... read more

I'm getting used to rest days. No early start, a hearty breakfast at our hotel and, most importantly, no having to pack up everything and lug it back down to the bikes. I wasn't quite sure what to do today as I had looked around town for a couple of hours last night. In the end I started by going to the one landmark I didn't see, and that was the Linz Castel. It currently houses a technology, culture and art museum. It sits high up on a hill (of course) and there are some old fortifications around it. Some great photos of the Danube and surrounds. After the castle I made my way to the Botanic Gardens. I find it strange coming from Melbourne that you have to pay to get into the gardens. It ... read more

Yes, I'm a Beatles fan and that title track came to mind as the day's weather unfolded. Nice to see you after you hiatus Mr Sunshine. Breakfast wasn't available until 8am so we got another sleep in. We were ready to leave about 9am. On the way up to the hotel yesterday afternoon there was some very aggressive and down right dangerous driving going on. Jeff felt we should take an alternate route back to the Danube for today's ride. This meant completing the climb we had started all the way to the top of the hill and then back down the other side via much quieter roads to the Danube below. So that's what we did. What we didn't realise was just how steep the 100m meters we had to climb was at 13%. Again, ... read more

Sleeping in isn't as easy as it sounds when the body is programmed to be up at 6:30am for the daily routing of getting ready to ride. Despite that we managed to sleep until about 7:15am. We sauntered down to breakfast just before 8am and duly inhaled as much food as we could - riding makes you hungry, even when you aren't riding. As in Nuremberg, I found a self guided walk which kept me busy until lunch time. Passau's old town is the rival of any of the others we've seen. A beautiful city that is at the confluence of 3 rivers, The Danube, The Inn, and The Ilz. It is also the start of the "golden stretch" of the Danube for tour boats. Everywhere I walked today there were groups of people being led ... read more

Let's start with dinner last night. We went across the road to the Greek restaurant, Santorini's. Another big plate of mixed meats and a strudel to finish off. We were celebrating smashing the 2,000km mark after all. It was still wet when we went to dinner, and when we came back to the hotel. It rained all night. We woke and it was still raining. A look at the forecast and we knew we were in for a cold and wet day. I put an extra layer of clothing on to keep warm. It never rains in California because it's all falling in Germany - on us! I thought this was meant to be summer? Today was simple, get from A to B - safely. At least the breakfast was first rate, best we've had so ... read more

Regensburg is a rustic old city full of charm and history. Being smack bang in the middle of Old Town and across the road from the cathedral was also pretty special. Coming in to town last night we went past a restaraunt and the smell coming off the grill was sensational, we both agreed that would be our dinner spot for the night. We both ended up ordering a Bavarian Grill plate, stacked full of beef, sausage and pork with a huge serving of potato salad (German style). We rolled out of the restaurant, walked around town and then just had to look up to see the twin spires of the cathedral to find our way back to the hotel. In the morning the bikes were still locked to a post were we left them the ... read more

The Gasthof Zum Hirschen was a wonderful hotel, we wished we could have stayed longer. Dinner last night and breakfast this morning were sensational. We also found a much longer road down to the canal which would have made the climb up yesterday bareable. Back on the canal for the morning stint and it's very quite, eerily so. No wind, hardly a ripple on the water and no barges, in fact no barges since Bamberg. We spoke to one person who said the water level is too low for the big barges. The big locks are not manned. You have to book ahead for locks to be operated for you. It really was like a ghost canal, but still very scenic. We had our morning break at a sleepy little town where we found a shop ... read more

If we could have spent another day (or two) in Nuremberg we would have but Istanbul waits for no-one. We had breakfast early, packed up and then did the relay down the 3 flights of stairs (53 steps) with our gear. It's almost become a joke when we turn up with all our gear, ask if there is a lift (usually no) and then see what floor our room is on. On the bright side, there were four floors of the Hotel Central City and we were only on 3! It was a bit of a slow get away, Jeff went to lube his chain, then couldn't find it (the lube not the chain). A journey back up the 53 steps to see if it was left in the room and, alas, not. He did manage ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Nuremberg (aka Nürnberg) August 3rd 2023

Move over Gent, here comes Nuremburg. Wow, just Wow! Rest day today and I spent it doing a self guided walk I found on "The Flashpacker" which took in the major sites of Old Town. Nuremberg was part of the Roman Empire and was where the emperor would come on his holidays. The city is completely surrounded by an intact huge stone wall and the Imperial Castle stands on top of the hill at one end presiding over Old Town. Not only is the wall that surrounds the city intact, so is the outer wall which surrounds that. While some of it was destroyed by bombing in WWII it has been rebuilt seamlessly since then. I could go on about the semi-wooden houses done in an eclectic mix of colours, the towers, the churches, the fountains, ... read more

Today is our last day on the Main River. We ride from the very beautiful town of Bamberg to the history filled city of Nuremberg. The day's forecast is for rain again, starting mid morning and continuing for most of the day. We hit the road at about 8:15am and while not raining there is a definite chill in the air today. As is our norm we start off very slowly, winding our way out of whatever town we're in. Just a way to warm up the legs and ease into a new day. The first few hours are dry at least. We end up riding on the canal most of the way rather than the Main River. We think this is the continuation of the canal that we will follow from Nuremberg that will take ... read more
