Regensburg is a rustic old city full of charm and history. Being smack bang in the middle of Old Town and across the road from the cathedral was also pretty special. Coming in to town last night we went past a restaraunt and the smell coming off the grill was sensational, we both agreed that would be our dinner spot for the night. We both ended up ordering a Bavarian Grill plate, stacked full of beef, sausage and pork with a huge serving of potato salad (German style). We rolled out of the restaurant, walked around town and then just had to look up to see the twin spires of the cathedral to find our way back to the hotel. In the morning the bikes were still locked to a post were we left them the night before, our journey therefore continues.
Back down onto the Danube and 3.4kms out of town we click over 2000kms so far, it's a nice total to hit but not even half way yet. The morning is easy riding in good weather. We catch up to a couple we have been leap frogging the past few days and ride with them for a while.
They live in Bulgaria, he is South African and she is Irish. We chat away the morning before they have to stop to give the dog a walk. Yep, that's right, their dog rides along with them in a basket sitting on the rear pack rack.
We have morning tea in a small village and then out on the track catch up with the couple again. We ride together to a town called Straubing which is very picturesque and then part ways again.
Lunch is at a small cafe/restaraunt. We have our own food but the giant mug of coffee we order and drink sitting in the shade while relaxing tastes perfect. Today is a long day, by lunch we've covered 57kms, but we still have 35kms to go.
The forecast is rain again, but somehow the rain seems to be all around us, but not on us. Then, with about 20kms to go it changes, big time. First the wind heralds the storm front, and then the rain descends. At least the wind is at our backs, but we are very wet. The rain comes and goes in waves. Thunder and lightening for a short time
as the storm passes directly overhead. It rains all the way into Deggendorf, not relenting at all. I turn up at the reception desk looking like a drowned rat, it's a wonder they didn't turn us away.
Nothing beats a hot shower when you're cold and wet, it makes you feel human again. I don't think we'll travel far from the hotel tonight, 92kms, even if it was easy riding, is still a big day. Tomorrow we ride to Passau on the German/Austrian border so it will be our last day in this beautiful country.
Distance travelled today: 92kms
