Strudel - With a Difference
The filling was not apple, it was semolina. Let's start with dinner last night. We went across the road to the Greek restaurant, Santorini's. Another big plate of mixed meats and a strudel to finish off. We were celebrating smashing the 2,000km mark after all. It was still wet when we went to dinner, and when we came back to the hotel.
It rained all night.
We woke and it was still raining. A look at the forecast and we knew we were in for a cold and wet day. I put an extra layer of clothing on to keep warm.
It never rains in California because it's all falling in Germany - on us! I thought this was meant to be summer? Today was simple, get from A to B - safely. At least the breakfast was first rate, best we've had so far. Crispy bacon, Mmmm!
As indicated, it was raining when we left and for pretty much the whole day. It did easy from time to time and almost stopped a couple of times, but never for long stretches until late in the afternoon, well after we had gotten to Passau. As we left Deggendorf we noticed a barge on the river,
Vishofhen on der Donau
Vishofhen on the Danube. the Vera S. Dam. It was good to see the barges again.
Jeff did the navigating today, his ear piece feeding him directions while his phone sat protected in his handlebar bag. We made good steady progress on bitumen paths. We stopped for a very welcome coffee just before 10am in the town of Winzer. Next door a crane was lifting a new church bell into the belfry, which drew a bit of crowd, even in the rain. As we left the bakery we saw the Vera S Dam sail past again. In fact we leapt frogged each other until about 20kms to go when we left it behind for good.
We rode from our morning break all the way into Passau. No fun stopping for lunch in the rain and at only 54kms for the day we reached Passau by 12:30pm. The last few kilometers were a bit hairy on a major road, but apart from that we had achieved the day's primary goal, reach Passau safely. Of course there was no way they were going to let us check-in at 12:30pm, so we dropped our bags and went into town. No sight-seeing though. It was still
rainning and quite cold and we were wet all the way through. We went into a shopping centre to get warm and eat our lunch. We killed time there, getting a coffee, looking at the shops, (all of them, over 4 levels!), and watching the Matildas beat the Danes 2-0, in the equivalent of "The Good Guys". I had a mild panic attack as I left the shopping mall and got back to my bike, my phone was not in my pocket. I rushed back in and checked the coffee shop and "The Good Guys", but no luck. I had already put it in my handlebar bag and just plain forgot - well, I am 60 now!
We are staying at The Atrium. We picked a nicer hotel with a larger room size and included breakfast because we are cashing in a rest day here. Passau looks like another town steeped in history and colour. Hopefully the weather clears enough for us to actually enjoy it.
(Not many photos today due to the rain)
