I woke a few times overnight and heard the air conditioner going, then I remembered we didn't have one, which meant it was raining persistently overnight. And the morning was no different. We left around 8:30am with the rain still falling. At least it wasn't too cold. The forecast predicted rain for most of the day with a chance of thunder storms. Not ideal. The day was meant to be all on the river today. We made good time considering the conditions and had ridden 23 of our 60kms by 10am when we rode into a town and spotted a coffee shop. We figured we could use a coffee (and cake as it turned out) and stopped for our morning break - probably for longer than we should have but it was dry inside. Jeff was ... read more

The Bike Lodge Hotel had everything a cyclist staying overnight needed, including washing machines and driers which we were in dire need of. Washing clothes in showers and basins only gets things so clean. As soon as we hit the room we filled a bag with clothes (including the days riding clothes) and took them down to set on a wash cycle and then back to the room to relax. Some time later an alarm went off and persisted. After about 10 minutes there was a knock at our door. The manager was there saying that an alarm on one of our bikes (mine) was going off. With horror I realised I hadn't taken my alarm fob out of my pocket before throwing my shorts into the wash. It must have shorted and set off the ... read more

Europe » Germany » Bavaria » Lohr am Main July 30th 2023

Today we left Ascaffenburg and the Main River to travel overland to Lohr. We have a number of hills today so we need our climbing legs on, something we haven't used for at least 2 weeks. There is no warm up, we leave town and head up. It's actually a very consistent grade of about 4 to 5% but it does go on for about 3.5kms. The climb wasn't too bad and it certainly got the legs warmed up and the ride down the other side was certainly fun - but this was just the entree. With only 200m climbed we still had the big climb ahead of us. We are both using Google Maps for navigation today but mine keeps wanting to re-route no matter what I do - driving me crazy!. We decide to ... read more

The skies looked threatening before we left Frankfurt, and with good reason. The forecast was for rain starting from around 8am and thunderstorms possible from midday through to 5pm. No time to take chances, we dressed for the weather and just as well. We left about 8:15am and had travelled less than 3kms before we were sheltering under some trees along the Main River while the rain pelted down around us. Oh dear! While the rain persisted, at least it wasn't cold. Our ride today was to Aschaffenburg (Bavaria), and a relatively short 51kms. The ride was actually very scenic and enjoyable, apart from the rain. We were riding along the river as much as behind green vegetation which hid the river from us. We also cross onto the west side of the river today. We ... read more

The rest days provide an opportunity to spend a bit of time in one spot rather than roll into town attend to what needs to be done, eat, sleep, breakfast, ride, rinse-and-repeat. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be doing this if I didn't enjoy it, but the rest days are GOLD. Frankfurt is a beautiful city. It has blended the old with the new in a more integrated way than we normally see where the old part of town is totally separate to the new part. There are lots and lots of high end shops to cater to any needs although it did take me numerous attempts to find somewhere that sold Garmin Heart Rate Monitors. Mine died after the first week of the ride and I've been trying to replace it ever since. Jeff ... read more

Let's start with the night before. As I mentioned, we were meeting up with Baerbel and Michael for dinner in their home town just across the river from Bingen. We caught the ferry over and were taken to the top of the hills behind Rudesheim which afforded great views over the Rhine (see photo). We then went on to have dinner in a local restaurant that served authentic German food. There was live music playing and the place had a great vibe. We had an amazing time with our hosts, the meal, conversation and company were all perfect. We caught the ferry back to Bingen at about 11:20pm and didn't get to bed until after midnight. This morning we both woke about 6:30am and began the ritual of packing up again - it is already getting ... read more

Today we travelled from Koblenz to Bengin. We casually walked our bikes out of our room and past reception just after 8am, loaded them up outside and we were off. The B&B Hotels are clean and functional but provide the bare minimum and the rooms are quite small. I suppose they serve their purpose when we are only there for a short number of hours. We wind our way out of the city and today we spend the whole day on the banks of the Rhine without any significant side deviations. The surrounds of the river now form a "V" shape with hills rising up on both sides. The hills are liberally covered in vineyards, sometimes it looks like the vines are almost vertical they are on such steep ground. The constant flow of barges is ... read more

Prologue: Forecast: 19C with showers from 8am until 12pm with local thunderstorms Destination: Koblenz Distance: 36kms Leave from Hotel at approx: 9am Approx arrival at Koblenz: 12pm (very conservative) Scene 1 Act 1 - The Beginning Since it's a short days ride and breakfast isn't served until 8am we take our time getting up and getting ready. Breakfast is OK without being grand but we did manage to grab a roll with meat and cheese to take with us for lunch. Scene 2 Act 1 - The Departure We load up the velos and head off in light drizzle which is likely to accompany us all day. First stop is the ferry to take us to the other side of the river, 1km down stream. Before we leave I decide to give my rear tyre a ... read more

July 24th, three and a half weeks after we left Melbourne and we finally get to ride along one of the major rivers of Europe, The Rhine. We got an early start leaving at 8am and crossed to the east side of the Rhine to start the day. Our route "took out" a big loop of the river, so for a short while we were on bike paths again, but we eventually found ourselves back on the river after a little while. There are numerous villages along the river, some bigger than others and the occasional city (like Bonn). As we get further away from Cologne and the hills either side of the Rhine come more into focus the occasionally castle or remnants of a castle can be seen. The constant are the barges transporting their ... read more

Europe » Germany » North Rhine-Westphalia » Cologne July 23rd 2023

Rest Day in Cologne. Sleep til you wake - any time is fine. Well, my body clock said 6am was fine. I lay in bed until 7:30am trying to get back to sleep and finally got up, had some breakfast and went to explore. Jeff still had some things to tidy up with his lost wallet. I love Cologne on a Sunday morning, this Sunday morning. There's a light drizzle, it seems to have cleansed the city from the Saturday night festivities the night before. All that noise and music of people enjoying themselves is the exact opposite of the calm, peaceful, empty streets I'm now walking. I walk in a preplanned direction soaking in all of the sights I had wanted to see. In the background the church bells are ringing, but now they are ... read more
