We were in no rush this morning. After deciding on our day's ride last night, Jeff threw up many more options this morning vasilating this way and that before settling back on the original route to Rushworth with a slight twist going the back way around Reedy Lake. The Saturday market in Nagambie provided an opportunity to pick up some fresh fruit before we started on our days short 31km journey. A short ride out of Nagambie we crossed the Goulbourn River for the last time across Kirwan's bridge. A magnificent wooden bridge with a bend in the middle. Built in 1890 it originally had two lanes but has only one now. The gaps between the sleepers meant we had to walk the bikes across but it was a great start to our day. Just up ... read more

Out of bed at 6:15am, bike packed from the night before. I need to get to Southern Cross Station for the 8:25am train to Seymour. In Yea, Jeff is sleeping soundly. Out the door at 7am. I want to make sure I'm not rushed getting the train. In Yea, Jeff is sleeping soundly. I ride to Southern Cross and find my way to the platform with rediculous easy, it's 7:45am and I'm wondering why I got up so early. In Yea, Jeff rouses from bed at about 8am, time for a pod coffee (luxury) The V/Line service is excellent. A place to tie up the bike and a comfy seat for me, much better than riding all the way to Seymour. I get off the train at Tallarook at 9:53am. The plan is to ride the ... read more

A phone call late yesterday meant I needed to head back to Melbourne for a few days, so this morning there were a few mixed emotions. Jeff had decided that he was going to press on alone and we'd I'd meet him in Seymour on Friday to continue. The morning was overcast and there had been steady drizzle through the night that persisted into the morning. We headed to the Golden Archers for a coffee and to map out the next few days to be sure when we could meet up again. It's funny how things work out, yesterday's "wrong'un" with the Yarra Valley Motel turned out to be perfect as we were exactly 1km form Lilydale station which was perfect for me to get home and about 100m from the start of the very water ... read more

Day 1 - There and Back Again. The big day had finally arrived. After postponing our ride numerous times due to the pandemic we were finally ready to depart. A late change of plan had us leaving around lunchtime from Fairfield rather than 8am from Docklands and I was feeling excited about starting the journey on my bike from my front door, no flying or driving anywhere, straight into it. I remember stating on one of our previous rides with unambiguous certainty that I'd never do touring where I had to carry my gear on the bike. Then after doing that last year the concession was that we spent each night in a hotel, but I'd never camp. So it was with some irony that I set out on my touring bike with panniers, front and ... read more

We had a few things we needed to do. We needed to get all our gear from the AirBnB to the Storage facility and we needed to return the hire car (from our Whistler trip) by 10am. So to kill two birds with one stone we loaded our gear (minus the bikes) into the hire car and dropped everything off at the Storage Facility and then continued on to the airport to return the car. We caught a cab back to the AirBnB and tidied up and checked out by 10:30am. We had a few hours left now to just wander as we wanted. We got on the bikes and muscle memory kicked in and our legs began to pedal. No urgency, no rush, just a gentle turn of the pedals. No one is in a ... read more

Today was Whistler Day for Tom, Jeff and I while Graeme was going to the Vancouver Aquarium for a mix of business and fun. We had originally decided on getting the bus to Whistler but decided we may as well hire a car and have discretion around when we left and returned. To make the morning more "efficient" we booked the hire car online from the Richmond airport which was only a few kilometers away. In the morning we caught a cab to the airport and tried to pick up our car. After sometime the guy at the service counter worked out that we had booked a car from Richmond - in Virginia, USA and not Richmond Airport in Vancouver. The other complicating factor was they had no cars available for us. Oh dear, nothing like ... read more

We rode the 6km from our hotel in Sidney to the Swartz Ferry Terminal in a quick 20 minutes, plenty of time to buy our tickets and put the bikes on board. The ferry is much bigger then the one that we caught from Seattle to Victoria and much cheaper too at only $18. We are visiting Edna today. Edna is the sister of Jeff's mother-in-law and lives in Surrey. We check the distance from the Tsanwassen Ferry terminal to Edna's place and back to Richmond where we are staying tonight and are quite shocked to find it's 90kms. Not something we were expecting. We realise that this is the same Surrey that we rode through on our first riding day of the trip. The ride is via a different route than we took that first ... read more

We woke to the sound of steady rain falling, thankfully it had stopped by the time we left for the ferry. It was only a short ride and we got there and on board with plenty of time to spare. The conditions were quite calm and the trip took just over two and a half hours arriving at 10:45am. We then had to collect our luggage and bikes and go through customs (as we had travelled from the US to Canada). At border security we went through as a group. The conversation went something like this . . . . Border Security Officer (BSO): So are you going to leave anything in the country? Tom: No Mark: No Jeff: No Mark: Hey Jeff, what about that present for Edna? Jeff: Oh yeah, I have a present ... read more

A relatively early start because there is a lot we'd like to squeeze in to the day. Our initial stop is the Pike Place Market. This is very touristy but it has been done very well. There are fresh flowers, arts, crafts and numerous other retail outlets including a number of magic shops. There is also fresh produce including meat and fish. One of the fish mongers makes a big deal when someone buys a salmon by hurling the fish from the display area to the wrapper about 10 feet back. It draws a big crowd and everyone has their cameras ready to roll in anticipation. We also got breakfast here at a great little shop that had amazing food. The selection was so good I changed my mind 3 times while I was waiting in ... read more

We all slept in a little with nothing planned for the morning. Tom didn't feel like breakfast (!!!) so stayed at the hotel while Jeff, Graeme and I went in search of food. Not much was open Sunday morning but we eventually found a nice bakery that was open and grabbed a bite to eat. We had seen people arriving early for the Football game and setting up cabanas in the carparks, getting BBQs out, and setting up TVs. We dropped in a on one to ask what they were doing and were immediately offered a beer (before 10am) and some BBQ chicken - well it would have rude to say No, wouldn't it? It's called "Tail Gating." Groups of friends turn up together, everyone brings food and drinks to share, they set up Tvs, BBQ ... read more
