After packing up in the morning we loaded the bikes into the RV and headed back into Chillicothe to start riding for the day. When we got there we realised our route was actually back the way we came - now that may seem like we don't know where we're going but the route instructions are actually quite complicated. Anyway, off we started on our day with a lovely ride through quite country roads. We hit HWY-50 which is our main road for the day. Nice to be on a road that we don't have to think about too much. Our plan for the day is to ride about 140kms. The temperature is quite mild which is great for riding but we do have the very slightest of head winds. The day progresses quite well, rotations ... read more

Our days are pretty predictable. We get up and go through the normal morning routine. What used to take 60 minutes now takes 90. We divide the day up into 8 sections and rotate through the RV twice to make sure we all end up with the same kms and then we get to an RV Park, do washing, cooking and communicating and then hit the sack ready to do it all over again. So what could possibly have happened today that was any different. The first section this morning took in the magnificent camp area that we stayed in. It had a massive lake in the middle and catered to many recreational needs. It was empty last night but they said it would be packed in a week when the holidays start. We had a ... read more

After going out for dinner for my birthday we had to find somewhere to stay for the night. This didn't go well. We ended up driving about 16km of our next ride leg before pulling over at a rubbish removal business and parking in his carpark. Not ideal! Up at 5:30am and it's still dark due to changing time zone, and it's actually cold. Riding before 7am and Tom is in a hurry to find a petrol station. Nature is calling and we feel it would be better if he did not avail himself of the RV Toilet. The road surface was quite rough this morning, and early on there was still a blanket of mist around until the sun managed to burn it off. The eastern part of the USA is much more densely populated ... read more

No alarm went off this morning but I still woke up just on 5:30am - the boys were rapt. I was treated to a rendition of Happy Birthday at breakfast and was given choice of which legs to ride for the day - perfect. We left just before 7am and made our way ever eastward. Crash Test Jeff decided he was riding today and there was no way we could dissuade him. He did have a generous portion of pain meds though. The road was perfect for the first 50kms, soooo smooth, and the wind gods granted me strong tail winds for my birthday. Jeff actually handled the riding very well considering. His first leg was a little conservative but after that it was like nothing had happened. He did need a top up on the ... read more

We drove into Greenville well after midnight not knowing where we were going to stay the night. We drove around and saw a sign to the hospital and figured their carpark would be as safe as anywhere so off we went. Four very tired Amigos, one a little battered all turned in for the night. The start of a new day, later than normal at 7:45am, but lets face we had had a big day. We got out of the hospital carpark quickly and made our way into town. We have settled for one section today instead of two to easy ourselves back into full swing. Dave and Tom rode first and I drove with my wing man, Crash Test Jeff ( he isn't taking too kindly to this nickname for some reason). Our total journey ... read more

You get by with a little help from your friends A bit of a late start this morning after a great night in Washington Missouri. Our stay in the carpark was uneventful, although we did get a visit from the police in the morning asking if we heard anything as a boat had been stolen over night. We drove out of the city and back on to the course route and started our first 25km leg. This included a very steep 15% hill of about a kilometre which certainly got the blood pumping. On the first driver change I got in the van while Dave, Tom and Jeff rode on. And that's when the "fun" started. I had driven ahead and parked to ensure the boys went in the right direction when I got a call ... read more

A fairly normal start to the day. The temperature was mild early on and the sky overcast but the humidity was very high. The morning was spent going on rolling hills on what appeared to be a fairly busy highway into Jefferson City. We had planned a big day of just over 200km and we reached Jefferson City just before lunch. There is a I a of the Liberty Bell there as well as a smaller version of the Capitol Building. But perhaps the most impressive tag we saw in Jefferson City was the massive Missouri River. It is a huge body of water about 300 meters across and flows quite quickly. We left Jefferson City via the bridge over the river. Our track notes said not to take the cyclist/pedestrian bridge and to ride on ... read more

Chasing the race. Up and out around 7am this morning. We had to make our way from Gunn Park back to highway 54. A slight misdirection quickly rectified only added about 1km to our riders journey. We were only 6 kms from the Missouri border and glad to be leaving the flat lands of Kansas. At the border were we stopped for photos there were a number of RAAM support vehicles. Of note there was Maria Parker who holds a number of world endurance records for cycling. Maria was off the bike to support some other riders who were about to come through. This was not officially part of the RAAM Race (I don't think). It was called Heroes on Wheels. The race was over the same course and was a being done by a team ... read more

Last night as we were sitting around we heard a gun shot echo around the RV Park. Well, it was actually Jeff's back tyre exploding off the rim. There was discussion as to if it was caused by a poor job of patching (done by Tom) or a poor job of fitting the tyre (done by Jeff). The important thing here was not who's fault it was, but that Jeff has leapt to second spot on the Puncture/Mechanical count and is looking to close in on Tom. We had to make an important decision this morning (well last night actually). I started to feel a bit of a calf strain yesterday which slowed me down a bit so we discussed having a day off for a rest. In the end the consensus was to sleep in ... read more

It's a beautiful morning, and the forecast is for about 30C (81F) although the humidity is expected to hit 98%. The sky is overcast which means we won't be riding in full sun for the first time on the trip. There is a slight wind and it's at our backs. What a cracker of a day for a ride. We've decided to do 30km stints in the morning which will get us through the town of Maize and then 14km stints in the afternoon which will get us to the town of El Dorado. We leave the pretty town of Pratt behind quickly and are soon out in the countryside once again. We're in farming country, lots of hay and corn being grown. The back road we travel on for most of the day has a ... read more
