First off an apology to the town of Trinidad. We were bagging it all night, but when we rode through the Main Street we found that it was quite pretty and filled with history. The life size horse statues were in reference to the fact that the Santa Fe trail which used to be the main trail from east to west ran right down Main Street. The old buildings were beautifully maintained and we even had a chat with a local watering her flowers as we rode through town. Moral of the story is never judge a town after riding 170km in the heat feeling exhausted and having to go to 3 RV parks before finding rest for the night. We woke to the alarm at 5:30am, not much movement. Time seems to speed up in ... read more

We took the later wake up time of 5:30am by default his morning and it still took us longer than normal to get ready. The temperature was cool but nowhere near as cold as the previous 2 days. We started off slowly to get the body warm and soon realised that we had a slight head wind to counter. We were doing 20km stints for the first rotation through the RV which would take us all the way through our climb for the day. The climb was gentle, rarely getting over 5% and mostly below 4%. I know you're probably sick of me saying the scenery is magnificent (Michael Carra) but it simply is. The pass we go over takes us over 3000m for the second time - I just loving say that! A quick stop ... read more

The alarm went off at 5:30am as usual. By 5:30:05am we had decided to sleep for another 30 minutes. It was cold. Very cold. Not surprising really considering the altitude we were at. The ride out was gently pointing up and we were wearing every article of clothing we had, the temperature was 5C. What a difference a few days make. The gentle climb is great to help warm the body up, fingers and toes were the last to stop aching. For me that was after about 20kms.Today was our day to climb to our highest point up to Wolf Pass at 3300m above sea level. How epic is that. The climb was about 6% and a steady grind rather than super hard. We were unsure if the altitude would get to any of us but ... read more

What a difference a day makes. Finally out of the desert, we wake to a temperature of 6C. We all look for our long tops to put on while we get ready in the morning. Today is a tough day of climbing. We're at the gateway to the Rocky Mountains. Dressing much warmer this morning we get off at 6:30am. After a gentle start the road starts pointing up but instead of sandy or scrubby desert we are treated to magnificent vistas of pine tree covered mountains. The huge ones dotted around still showing the remains of the winter snow. As we climb to the first main mountain pass of the day Hersperus Mountain towers over us at 4000m. As we approach the pass we see a bike event in progress. It was called Ride the ... read more

North America » United States » Colorado » Cortez June 12th 2017

We woke to the alarm as usual but not the same jump to get going this morning. Everyone's starting to feel a little weary after 600kms of desert riding and sapping heat. Despite that we're ready to go at 6:30am with Tom in the RV for the first drive. Just as we take off Dave says his gears won't change properly. We all have a bit of a look and as we're adjusting it the gear cable snaps. That's a problem, a big problem. Out comes the tool kit and Dave even thought to bring spare cables but we can't get the cable out of the gear shifter. Change of plan, Dave does the driving to start with and Tommy is on the road, we think about if there,s a bike shop in Cortez where we ... read more

North America June 12th 2017

Up while still dark this morning due to the weird situation with the Timezone in Tuba City and out an hour later. We're getting good at this. The temperature is a cool 13C, oh what a feeling. The first 40km was mostly a gentle uphill with 2 spurts of downhill to add a bit of fun. The cool air makes it an easy ride. Dave swapped in and me out at the first change maintaining the gentle uphill until about 27km from Kayenta where the gentle downhill takes over. Just out of Kayenta Jeff and I swap places and the down hill fun began. We made fast time averaging well above 30km/hr and it only got better when we took a north east fork to monument valley. The wind was well and truly at our backs ... read more

North America » United States » Arizona » Grand Canyon June 10th 2017

Today was our first rest day. We packed up and headed off before anyone turned up at the office so accommodation last night was free. Our destination today was the Grand Canyon. We had to drive about 200kms to get there but was it worth it!It's hard to put into words the scale of what you are looking at. It even takes you eyes time to adjust to the images you are seeing. From south rim to north rim of the canyon is 10 miles and it's a mile deep. And all of this was created by the Colorado River. The visitor centres were great and provided heaps of information on how the canyon was formed. For instance snow melt that would fall into cracks during the day and then refreeze overnight would help slit the ... read more

Up another 30 minutes earlier this morning and on the road by 6am. The temp is 17.5C and the sun is rising in front of us as we head off, glorious. We're riding between two mountain ranges. The valley floor is kilometres wide. The first part of the day is a constant uphill ride of between 1 and 2 percent gradient. By 8am the temperature has hit 30C, it's going to be another hot ride in the desert. There are 2 main climbs today, the first is out of a town called Congress. It's a magnificent climb averaging about 4.5%. The road is wide with a large shoulder, if it wasn't for the 42C during the climb it would have been perfect. After some begging from me Dave swapped out of the van and let me ... read more

We started early this morning. Up at 5:30am and out of the park by 6:30am. Great to make use of the early morning when the temperature is much cooler although it didn't get below the mid 20s overnight. The first ride for the day was basically flat, as was the rest of the day mostly. We coasted into Blythe with a slight breeze at our backs, glorious. From Blythe we crossed the mighty Colorado River which is the border between California and Arizona. There was some meandering to be done around the freeway but soon we were on our way through the desert again. At this stage Tom, Dave and I were riding and the temperature just kept rising. We spent most of the ride at 42C, and when that gets intensified off the bitumen its ... read more

The start of a new day, bright sunshine and the promise of flat riding after some early climbing. Dave starts in the van today and we set off by 7:30am - perfect. We climb out of Santa Ysabel gaining 350 meters through the historic town of Julian and then into the most magnificent 9km decent through a massive V-shaped valley. No cars on the road allow us to enjoy the scenery as we weave around the turns - this is what we came here for! After flattening out a bit we entered the Borrego Desert State Park. Here another 4km descent took us to the bottom of a canyon which opened onto a massive valley. The canyon was almost barren with huge boulders scarring it, sticking out every where. Almost at the bottom a coyote leapt ... read more
