A comfortable starting time this morning had us loop back to the storage facility after we rationalised down our luggage somewhat - especially me. Saving every gram of weight was an advantage so we cut back to the bare minimum of non-cycling clothes. Just a couple of shirts and shorts, one pair of pants and a jumper. Done! We planned to take a route that went via the river to Maple Ridge and then head south to Abbortsford. What became obvious very early was our dependence on Google Maps, without it we would have been lost. Mind you even with Google Maps we managed to sill take a number of wrong turns. We did get some great scenery along the river. Huge numbers of logs being floated down the river to the saw mill, a beautiful ... read more

As I type this entry it's 34 hours after the time I got up on Friday (5am) and its STILL Friday! We actually landed in Canada 2 hours BEFORE we took off so effectively I figure we were younger when we arrived than when we left. Not sure what that means on the way back but I'm sure it will have something to do with time travel. The flight over was in a Dreamliner 787. A very nice plan even back in the cheap seats in Economy. The flight was uneventful but 14 hours is still a VERY long time to spend sitting on a plane. We got into Canada at 7:30am. The bikes all turned up safe and sound and we made our way by taxi to a Storage Facility near our hotel where we ... read more

We head off on a different trip this time. Not the feather light purebred stallion racing bikes beneath our saddles of our previous trips, but rather the draft horse of the cycling world, Touring Bikes. There'll be no 30km/hr days as we lug upto 30kgs of bike and baggage up the Rockies, and around the roads and rail trails of Canada. It's not going to be quite as rough and ready as full on touring though, with accommodation booked for each night along the trail and some well placed rest days along the route. It's the first time touring for me and I must say I think I went a size too small on the panniers with only 2 x 15 Litre bags. I might have to bribe the boys into carrying a few items for ... read more

The ride has ended but the energy levels expended haven't. We spent the first day after completing the ride in Washington. We visited the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, the World War II Memorial, the Martin Luther King Jr Memorial, the Franklin D Roosevelt Memorial, The Jefferson Memorial, the Reflection Pool and then went and had dinner at the Elephant and Castle pub. We counted this as our official celebration dinner. After dinner we went back to Independence Mall to watch the 4th of July Fireworks. Quite impressive but lasted only about 20 minutes. Yet people had been reserving their spots on the lawn for hours earlier including a 30 minute rain shower - our first for the trip. We returned to Washington the next day and this time spent the day visiting the various Smithsonian ... read more

Thought it might be a bit of fun to explore each of the Amigos in Profile. Amigo Dave, aka Froomie, Davie, WallyDave gets the mantle of most improved on the ride. Let's just say when he started he resembled a 44 gallon drum but by watching his diet and riding 3000kms he trimmed down to about a 42.5 gallon drum. Dave also gets the title of master navigator as the app he had loaded on his phone with a complete street map of the US saved our bacon more times than we can count. Let's just say Dave's love of Walmart was unnatural and the reason he earned the name "Wally". He would almost foam at the mouth as we drove into the carpark. We called him Froomie because of the Sky kit he wore. By ... read more

It was a strange feeling waking up knowing this was the last day we would go through the morning ritual. We had agreed that we could afford to get up an hour later and leave by 8am. After all we only had 66kms each to do today. An easy day to end with. Off we went with Dave as the first driver for the day. We were actually very close to both Washington and Baltimore, two very big cities that we had to navigate between to get to Annapolis. This made it even more remarkable that we were still going down what appeared to be country roads with beautiful lush green forest, or open farms and still the odd field of the ever present corn crops. First change over was for Jeff to drive. Jeff jumped ... read more

We woke up refreshed after a night in the motel where we all had our own double beds, with clean sheets and a shower that actually has hot water. A continental breakfast later and we were on the road again. The plan for the day was . . . . . Let's just stop there. There's no point saying what the plan for the days was because it changed so often. The Camouflage ManThe day started with a 3km climb out of town. Dave, Jeff and I were on the road and Tom was in the car. Off we went. At the top of the climb Dave and I waited for Jeff to get to the top. And he never turned up. We waited a few minutes and when we didn't see him come into sight ... read more

After a stressful day yesterday we ended up in the local Walmart carpark again. No showers and we were low on fresh water so no shower in the RV either. We bought fresh water and had to make do with a rinse with soap. Disgusting. It just added to the days tension. A new morning brings new hope. We woke to a heavy mist over the mountains. Luckily there was no rain. We all got ready and drove out in the RV with the bikes on board. First order of the day was petrol and fresh water. We found both at a petrol station along with coffee. It was sickly sweet but it was COFFEE!!! The day felt better already. Time to ride! We have 7 significant climbs through the Appalachian mountains today and since I'm ... read more

We managed to leave the Walmart carpark at about 6:45am. It wasn't the best place to stay but the Walmart was open 24 hours so at least we had a toilet to use in the morning. Today was scheduled to be fairly long at 126kms each. It will be our longest day before we finish with each of the following 3 days having less kilometres. Significant today was a number of steep climbs that was capped off with a 15km descent at the end of the day. We also crossed into Maryland today. The climbs were as advertised. One at 7kms and 6% and a second at 5kms and 8%. These we expected but it was the numerous other smaller climbs that really sapped the legs. We each climbed in the order of 2000 meters today ... read more

We only have 5 days of riding left if all goes to plan. Today is relatively short at a total distance of just over 120kms. The boys decide a sleep in is in order, as a concession we all agree to try and get ready faster. We left Harrisville and meandered up HWY-50 again, hoping for better luck than yesterday. We had a fairly uneventful morning but there was a lot gravel on the side of the road which made riding a bit difficult. At one of our stops there was a metal elephant about 1.8m tall. It had a sign on it that read Trump, Making America Great Again. Better be careful what we say around here. We had to drive through Clarkson and the route took us off the highway and through town. We ... read more
