Day 11.5 - Plans Change Part I Still in Chichester it's dinner time, Greek food - yum! We have to decide if we want to avoid Dover and Calais as we have an opportunity to catch a ferry from Newhaven (tomorrow's destination) to Dieppe in France if we want to. The conversation is robust and no decision is made over dinner. Instead we go back to our room and first try to book accommodation in Newhaven. That's where we hit our first snag - we couldn't find anything that suited us at all (2 beds, plus bike storage). The only things available were way out of town or way too expensive. We restarted the conversation about going to Dieppe on the ferry. We looked at available ferries - we could get on a ferries at either ... read more

The facilities at The Chilworth Manor were amazing. "The Club" had steam room, sauna, spa and indoor pool. Jeff and I made good use of it all to soothe our tiring muscles. We were cycling out of Chilworth by 8:30am, the route to Chichester today took us very close in to Southampton. We were in suburbia for all but a handful of kilometers. The roads were mostly very busy, thankfully we had cycle paths/lanes for a good deal of the day. We travelled 63kms and have effectively just moved the requisite distance towards Dover. Today was more about the destination than the journey. The ride was made that bit easier by the westerly we had at our backs for most of the day. We stopped for a rare photo opportunity at Portsmouth where the cycle path ... read more

Day 10 - To the Manor Born Our destination for today was Chilworth. It's an outer suburb of Southampton. We decided there's no point going all the way into Southampton which is quite a big city if we were just going to move on the next morning. Distance today is 44 miles or about 70kms. The George Inn was very comfortable (for me as I had the double bed) and a little less so for Jeff (on the roll out bed), Food at the pub was a bit hit and miss but still a nice place to stay. We left via National Route 24 which provided such magnificent riding yesterday and this morning it didn't disappoint. Quiet roads with fields all around, some with corn, some grass for hay, and other with vegies of some sort. ... read more

What a day, it had everything! Including a complimentary breakfast which meant there were no excuses for not being fully carbo loaded before we started out. It took 5kms of suburban roads, and a number of hills before we hit the Bristol-Bath Railtrail. What a great way to get to Bath, It's paved the whole way, runs slightly down hill and is lined with foliage the whole way. There were riders, runners and walkers out on it enjoying their Sunday. And it was a cracker of a day too, temperature wise. We got to Bath at about 10am and started to look around. One of the first things we did was stop to watch a Dutch band play in a square. The band was great, the drawing pin I rode over to get there wasn't. I ... read more

An early start to the day had us heading off our planned course to something that has been on Jeff's Bucket List (since yesterday) - going to the river head of the River Thames just out of Kemble. Crickdale is fairly close to Kemble so we head out that way to start the day. The last 500m is on grass and dirt (ugh!). The river head itself is an ancient wall with water holes at the bottom (photo not included). To think this is the source of the mighty river that flows through London is amazing. From Kemble we turned south west to the city of Bristol. This will be our launching place for Bath tomorrow which is only about 20kms away. We have seen a number of "road kill" on the roads but the site ... read more

Day 7 - The Loch Weir Keeper We headed off about 8:30 this morning towards Cricklade. Google Maps said it was 56kms away. The forecast was for a top of 28C, it's starting to feel a bit like summer. I was navigating today and started following the route which was anything but inspiring. We were on an "A" road with lots of traffic and very little to enjoy in the way of scenery. We stopped a short way out of Oxford to look at options and decided to go down a small lane and reach Crickdale via some minor roads. It would be longer but hopefully more enjoyable. We were instantly rewarded. Hiding just off the main road was a Toll Bridge over the Thames (bicycles were free) and as we glanced right we caught sight ... read more

Reunited in Reading, Jeff was exhausted by the time he got back with his passport. It was a late dinner (Afghan Restaurant) and then turn in for the night. when on his own yesterday, Jeff worked out he could navigate using the MapMe App without a WiFi signal and so today Jeff would be leading and doing the navigating. We left the Abbey Motel at 8:30am, destination Oxford, some 55kms away. The route via MapMe took us onto an overgrown dirt track just outside Reading, which was a little damp. We had only gone about 80 meters where our path was blocked by a fallen tree with no getting past. Some ladies walking in the opposite direction advised we could push out through the bushes into an adjoining golf course and ride past the obstruction and ... read more

It's here. The first day of the ride in earnest. Waking up early had its benefits today. We were able to pack up and get out by just after 7am. Our luck continued when they let us take our bikes on a peak hour train towards London. We were training it to the Thames (about 20kms) and then riding along the Thames as much as possible towards Oxford without much chance of reaching there tonight. That's about when our luck changed - So, What Could Possibly Go Wrong (WCPGW)? Just as we started to ride, I pulled over to adjust my camera with Jeff just behind me. By the time I was finished he was nowhere to be seen. I thought he gone on so followed, but he had gone around a corner behind me to ... read more

Another early morning. Need to get accustomed to it being light at 4:30am! Our plans for a warm up ride soon took a back seat to all that we realised we still needed to get done before we leave. I had 15 things on my list without trying too hard. We made a trip to a couple of bike shops for some last minute items. We went back to Bob's cafe where we siphoned WiFi on Sunday, this time for the coffee, not the WiFi. We also visited a Tesco Express to get some food supplies. While shopping we noticed if we had a Tesco Loyalty Membership it was a significantly cheaper shop. I tried both the Tesco App and their website to join, but it seems non-residents didn't qualify. At this point, the check out ... read more

Day 3 July 3rd - Playing Tourist The first of our two full days in London was doing what any tourist does in London - seeing the sites. We were up early, and in Jeff's case, very early (about 4:30am!!!!). While not welcomed, the early start meant we were on our way by 9am. Our train ride into London was spent reading the local papers whinge about how bad sports the Australian cricket team was after the Bairstow dismissal in the 2nd Ashes Test. It was a great win by the Aussies to go 2 up in the series and hearing the Poms whine about it made it all the sweeter! The first stop today was the London Science Museum. We spent about 2 and a half hours there and we barely scratched the surface of ... read more
