Today is our last day on the Main River. We ride from the very beautiful town of Bamberg to the history filled city of Nuremberg.
The day's forecast is for rain again, starting mid morning and continuing for most of the day. We hit the road at about 8:15am and while not raining there is a definite chill in the air today.
As is our norm we start off very slowly, winding our way out of whatever town we're in. Just a way to warm up the legs and ease into a new day.
The first few hours are dry at least. We end up riding on the canal most of the way rather than the Main River. We think this is the continuation of the canal that we will follow from Nuremberg that will take us all the way to the Danube, but that's still a few days away.
The riding is mostly flat as you would expect but there is a head wind. Rain spots start at about 10am. We discuss stopping at this stage but decide to keep going while we can and look for somewhere that might offer coffee and shelter. We find
that in a town called Hausen at about 10:30am. The coffee (yes, yes, and pastries) are great and, as we sit, the rain rolls in. We eventually pry ourselves out and put on our jackets knowing the rest of the day will be soggy.
We been travelling via Google Maps this morning, despite my preference for the Eurovelo Route. The routes have diverged and come togather again a number of times but they separate dramatically after our morning break. The rain is steady now, and there is a chill in the air. I need to keep warm as I don't handle the cold well. By lunch time we've covered over 40kms and we manage to find a bakery. A huge cup of coffee paired with a huge pizza slice manages to hit the spot. Our slogan has always been, "We'll train when we get there". Jeff added, "The diet starts when we get back" as a trailer.
We left the warmth of the bakery and the temperature had dropped again. Jeff was low on phone battery and couldn't use it for navigation. My phone doesn't play well with water and cuts out. I convinced Jeff to let me navigate
via my Garming GPS. It has the route preplanned in it, but does not have the maps of Europe loaded (long story). It means when I navigate I get a triangle which represents me and a brown line on a blank screen which represents the route. So this was a leap of faith for Jeff, especially as the route was a couple of kilometers away from our pesent position. I started riding and headed towards the brown line on my screen. The weather was wet and cold and I was feeling it. Repeat after me, "Stay Warm, Keep Pedalling, Follow the Line". I repeated my mantra most of the afternoon. We found our way onto the course and managed to hold true to it. Nuremburg is a big city, the last 10km's was on a main road with a dedicated bike path and constant rain (Stay Warm, Keep Pedalling, Follow the Line). Once we got in the city I had to change over to my phone because it had the address of the hotel keyed in for an end point of the day (something my Eurovelo route didn't). Thankfully the phone had survived the day's drenching and it flicked into
life and brought us the last couple of kilometers to the hotel.
A hot shower makes an enormous difference after a soggy day.
We got a taste of what Nuremberg has to offer on our way into the city. Tomorrow is a well earned rest day from riding, one we have well and truly earned after the last couple of days. I've looked up a self-guided walking tour of the Old Town which I'm planning on doing and very much looking forward to.
Not sure if I'll blog tomorrow or not, depends on the day's events I guess.
