I didn't have a blog yesterday because we stayed at Chugach National Forest near the Portage Glacier. It is sthe 2nd largest national forest in the U.S. It is in the Portage Valley near the Portage Glacier. There are several glaciers there which I mentioned when we visited there earlier. I am attaching a picture of a glacier. This is the view from where we parked our RV. As I said we didn't have a blog because of no wi-fi. Also no water and electricity. Real fun time! We stayed there because it was near where we needed to be this morning to start our trip. After we arrived at the campground, we drove to the nearby Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. My cousin, Linda highly recommended this. The Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving ... read more

Another chilly, rainy day. Didn't do much today. I am attaching a picture of Jim, Charlie and Barbara cooking hot dogs at lunch on a fire by our RV's. We also had s'mores. It would have been better if it hadn't been drizzling rain. We went to Church tonight and then went out to eat. We ate at a restaurant on the docks next to the fishing boats. Next to us was a fish market that also cleaned the fish that the charter boats brought in. We could see the men cleaning the fish from the restaurant. There were 12 cleaning stations and they were very fast at their work. There were some very big fish. One fish, a halibut, took two men to get it up on the cleaning station. But, he made short work ... read more

Drove from Kenai to Seward yesterday. Cloudy, misty day. Yesterday afternoon, Charlie, Ruth, Jim and I drove from our RV park to Seward which is about 6 miles away. I tried to take some pictures but it was too overcast. Today was a comletely different day. Sunny and beautiful. Was about 54 when we got up today. Probably got to 60 today. Jim, Charlie and Jerry went on a hike to Exit Glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. Jim said that it was about a mile uphill. He said it was an enjoyable hike. I am attaching pictures that he took there. I had one of the nicest evenings of my entire trip tonight. I got to visit with two of my cousins, Vickie and Linda here in Seward. Their dad and my dad were brothers. ... read more

As I mentioned we went to Homer yesterday and to the Homer Spit. As I said, the spit is a narrow piece of land extending into Kachemak Bay. All along the road that goes down the middle of the spit are restaurants, fishing charter businesses and little shops. The large docks are also there. I am attaching a picture of the fishing boats at the dock. In the background of the picture, the town of Homer is located on the bluff overlooking the spit. Whenever we mentioned to anyone that we were going to Homer, they said that we had to go inside the Salty Dawg Saloon. This is a very small building. So, we went inside and there are dollar bills attached everywhere, ceiling, walls, etc. All of the dollar bills are signed by the ... read more

The end of the road. We went to Homer Alaska today which is at the end of the Sterling Hwy. on the Kenai Pennisula. This is about 80 miles from where we are in Kenai. Homer is the Halibut Fishiing Capital of the World. At the end of the road in Homer, there is a narrow piece of land called a spit that extends about 2 1/2 miles into Kachemak Bay of Cook Inlet. The spit has a road running through it with widths of the spit being approx. 50 ft. to maybe 500 ft. The harbor of Homer is at the spit. I imagine the main industry there is fishing. Big ferries come in there and also big commercial boats come in there. On the road to Homer, we stopped at Anchor Point. It is ... read more

Another cool, rainy day. Stayed in most of the day. Jim and I walked up to the office of the RV park this morning. The owner of the park has 10 acres here and his parents own 80 acres around the park. The parents moved here in the 70's. The owner's father was at the fish cleaning station with his grandchildren. He was fileting a skate. A skate is a member of the sting ray family. This one was about 3ft across. They only filet the top part of the wings. He also had just finished fileting a shark that was about 2ft. long. He offered us some, but we passed. I need to make a correction about last night's blog. I mentioned that one man had got 95 salmon and he was entitled to 35 ... read more

Had kind of a slow day today. We had light rain this morning and around 60. We went to church this morning and then out for breakfast. It took us almost 2 hrs. to get our food. Friday, on our way here, Jim turned on the air-conditioning and the blower wouldn't work. Jim thought maybe it was a fuse. He has been trying to find the problem since we got here. Yesterday, one of the men (Dan) who is involved with the Work Camp that I mentioned yesterday, came by to invite us to the dinner last night. Jim mentioned his problem. It just so happened that Dan used to have a heating/air-conditioning business in Michigan. He came by today and he and Jim finally found the problem. It was a four prong connector that had ... read more

Our RV park is located between Soldotna and Kenai on the Kenai Pennisula. This area is very busy with people coming here to fish. We drove to the town of Kenai today. I took a picture overlooking the Cook inlet joining the Kenai River. Hopefully, you can see all of the people dip netting for salmon. They are literally standing next to each other. They are on both sides of the inlet. They had their tents set up there also. The dip net season for salmon started July 10 and ends July 31. They use a 48" diameter loop net that is on a long pole. They all had on heavy waders as I am sure the water was cold. The air temperature was around 60. I am not sure of the maxium take on this ... read more

We left Palmer this morning - beautiful sunny day - around 70. Drove south of Anchorage on the Seward Highway. Absolutely beautiful drive with the mountains on one side and the water on the other. I thank God for the eyes to see all the beauty he has given us. We drove through the Chugach National Forest and came to the Portage Valley where the Portage Glacier and several other glaciers are located. Beautiful. We had lunch in our RV looking at the Portage Glacier. Don't think you could get a better view anywhere. We traveled on down the Kenai Peninsula. Again, this drive is beautiful. Lots of lakes and rivers. I noticed in the Kenai River that there were fishermen standing in the water fishing. I asked Carroll about this as he lived here and ... read more

I didn't think I would have anymore blogs from here but Jim and Jerry went on a little expedition this morning around the RV park and brought back some very nice pictures that I thought I should share. Next to our park is an organic garden. Jim thinks they probably had about 3 acres and 4 greenhouses. They were growing kohlrabi, broccoli, cauliflower, onion, spinach, zuchinni, tomatoes, cabbage, dill, peas, swiss chard and he said they had corn that was only about 1 1/2 ft. tall but was already tasseling. They had a sign that said they only sold vegetables on Friday evening from 5-7. Jim thought maybe they took the vegetables to farmer's markets . The pictures of the mountains and the lake are near our RV park. I am also attaching a picture of ... read more
