We finally made it! We crossed the border into Alaska at Mile 1,218 on the Alaska Highway. Yesterday we spent an extra day in Whitehorse. Larry needed to get two new tires - one for his camper and one for his truck - expensive. Some of the ladies went to the quilt shop. They do a lot of quilting and they like to shop in different areas of the country for new patterns and materials. Jim and Charlie went with Larry to get the new tires. I spent the morning cleaning and doing laundry. We went to Tim Hortin's for lunch. This is a chain restaurant in Canada. It has soups, sub sandwiches and pastries. Good. We took a tour of Whitehorse. Thought it would be bigger since it has over 27,000 people. But, they say ... read more

Before we left Watson Lake, we stopped at Signpost Forest. This was started by a homesick soldier working on the Alaska Highway in 1942. It is a large park with posts that have at least 70,000 license plates, road and traffic signs and unique home-made signs. Each year more than 2000 are added. Charlie and Ruth brought a sign (made by Fred) giving Mt.Carmel and the mileage. Hopefully, the pictures will be with this blog. We stopped at Teslin. The picture of the lake here shows the largest span over water on the Alaska Highway. The Chinook Salmon spawn here in this bay. Then they travel over 1800 miles to the Bering Sea. We had lunch in Teslin. About 35 miles from Whitehorse, Larry had a tire blow out on his camper. Jim and Charlie helped ... read more

We left Fort Nelson, British Columbia this morning. Had an excitiing(?) day travelling through the Northern Rocky Mountains. I think we drove only 95 miles until noon and then finished the day with 319 miles at Watson Lake, Yukon Territory. The Alaska highway is a two lane road. It has it's good spots and bad spots. They were working on parts of it today. They tilled the road up and graded it back as gravel surface for about 5 miles. Slow going. Of course all of our rv's are covered with dust. So most of the day we were up and down and lots of curves. But, it was beautiful. We even saw some snow beside a small stream. We also saw a beautiful glacial lake that is the most beautiful green color. But the best ... read more

Not too much to report today. Just travelled today. Drove from Ft. St. John to Ft. Nelson, British Columbia on the Alaska Highway. Very few people live along this route. It is mostly evergreen, birch, and pine trees. We did see quite a bit of logging. They also have oil and gas fields here. I think if you had car trouble, you would have a time getting help. We had several steep grades up and down mountains and those that know me, know I really like mountains(not!) They were also doing road construction and I think we got a rock chip in our windshield. Glad we don't have a new motor home. I decided to do some laundry in my washer/dryer in the motor home. It costs $5.00 a load to wash and dry at the ... read more

This morning we left Grande Prairie and drove toward Beverlodge, Alberta. The country between these towns is mostly farm ground. I kept noticing a crop growing in Alberta and I also saw it in Montana. At first I thought it was soybeans but the leaves were bigger. I also saw some fields with these leaves that had yellow flowers. I asked someone and they told me it was Canola. They make Canola oil out of this. This was new to me and interesting. We stopped and took this picture with the giant bever in Beverlodge. This area is highly agricultural. Then we headed to Dawson Creek. It was misting rain and very chilly. I even put on my winter coat. This is where the Alaskan Highway begins. It is about 1500 miles long to Fairbanks, Alaska. ... read more

We had a beautiful day in Canada today. The weather was a a little cool this morning but sunny. It is now 70 at 8:15 p.m. It doesn't get dark here until around 10:30. We drove from Edmonton to Grande Prairie. We are still in the province of Alberta. They have a lot of pine trees here. Some pastures and cattle. In this area not many houses in between towns. We ate at the Canadian Brewhouse. I had an unusual pizza but very good. Had some kind of potato chips, bacon, chives, cheese and sour cream. Everything is more expensive here. We paid about $5 for a gallon of milk. I will try to add the pictures that I wanted on the blog last night. The WiFi was so slow it kept kicking me off and wouldn't ... read more

Yesterday morning we left Great Falls, Montana. Hopefully I can get a picture of our 4 rv's lined up to leave. We crossed the border into Canada at Sweet Grass Montana. We stayed last night in Granum, Alberta. No Wi-Fi. This morning we headed toward Calgary. On the way we stopped at Vulcan. For all you Star Trek fans, I took a few pictures there. I wasn't much of a Star Trek fan but I think my kids were. We travelled through the city of Calgary - lots of traffic. We had rain all last night. Wish we could send some to Illinois. We had mist all day today. We are spending the night here in Edmonton. I have been having trouble trying to figure out how far someplace is as they have the metric system ... read more

We have all of our traveling companions now. Yesterday I added a picture of Becky and Larry. That makes 10 of us traveling in four rv's. We had another beautiful day in Montana. We went to the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center. Very interestiing. We were there 3 hours and could spend days. Lewis and Clark travelled 4000 miles in 18 months - think they made very good time! We went to Fudrucker's for lunch. I had my first buffalo burger. Very good. Tonight we had another good potluck meal. We have some very good cooks in our group. Tomorrow we are heading for Canada. Don't know how often I will be able to add to the blog when we are in Canada. It is just after 10:00 and it just turned dark. ... read more

Another beautiful day in Montana. Was 47 this morning. Now 79. We had a nice potluck dinner last evening. Good food and good companionship. We went to see the four falls that are here on the Missouri river. The Missouri river empties into the Mississippi at St.Louis. These falls produce hydroelectric power. We were planning to leave tomorrow but think we will stay one more day. I had a new experience last night and this morning. As I said yesterday, we are next to an Air Force base. Last night at 10:00 they played taps and this morning at 7:00 they play revelie(sp?). Disclaimer - I am not responsible for misspelled words or typo's.... read more

I am writing this blog for three days as we did not have any internet since Sunday night. As I previously noted, we were having trouble with the motor home - thought it was transmission problems. We started out Monday morning from Sturgis, SD. We were going to Devil's Tower but Jim thought we should go on to Gillette, WY to see if we could get the motor home fixed. Our other travel companions went on to Devil's Tower. Jim and I went to the Cummins shop in Gillette. We were very happy to learn that all the problem was a clogged gas filter. Was clogged with algae. They replace the filters and we were able to go on to our campground. Meanwhile, Jerry and Carolyn's motor home got low on diseal and just quit because ... read more
