South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Chaltén January 20th 2015

We arrived in El Chalten - Argentina ( the trekking/mountain climbing capital) I know it probably sounds redundant but this in terms of landscape beauty is over the moon.....we camped riverside right at the base of the mountains. We arrived around noon had a nutritious lunch of PBJ and apples. Boy oh boy my body is dying for fruits and veggies, all you can find is apples, the odd nectarine and carrots. We packed our backpacks with snacks and water and started off on a 7km hike to Lago Capri......reaching our destination was a little peace of heaven as it was about 30 degrees! Lago Capri is a glacier lake at the base of Mt. Fritzroy (climbers come from all over the world to summit this mountain) Not a shocker to those who know us well, ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate January 16th 2015

El Calafate is the lovely town you drive through before hitting Los Glaciers National Park where there are beautiful Lagos and sites but the highlight is the famous Glaciar Perito Moreno, it measures 35km long, 5km wide and 60m high. What makes this Glaciar exceptional is that it's advancing 2m per day were most of the worlds Glaciars are receding. It's constantly dropping chunks of ice off its face....this is called calving. We camped at the entrance of the Park so when it opened we were there the first to enter. ( a tidbit of info from other travellers) We arrived and hiked down to the bottom platform and took in the spectacular giant Glaciar in front of us in silence ( or as much silence as possible with our Mr. Max :) lol. We stayed ... read more

South America » Argentina » Tierra del Fuego » Ushuaia January 10th 2015

Fin del Mundo - End of the world Ushuaia - most southern city in the world, huge tourist city as it is the gate way to the Antarctica. Ushuaia was originally founded as a penal colony (prison) On the edge of the city is also the entrance to Tierra del Fuego National Park. The city is built on a mountain, so every street is layer/tired down to the port. We arrived in Ushuaia just in time for dinner.....their local specialty is King Crab (similar to Alaskan KC) of course Sean being the adventurous eater went for the KC. We woke to the extremely loud sound of Latin dance music, wow do these Argentines know how to party to the wee hours. It is a balmy 2degrees, we all sleep in long johns and toques! We had ... read more
