Geo: -22.9458, -43.1825Unfortunately our plans did not turn out as we had anticipated, with there being no cash in any cash point in Botafogo and Gus coming at 3.30 rather than 4.30 to the apartment! We caught the tube to impanema as we knew there was a working bank there.,came straight back and went to Fran's cafe again for a waffle breakfast! I may have also purchased a pair of havaianas or two :/ then packing! At least we are homeward bound this time so not such urgency on the 'packing properly' Sadly due to the early arrival of Gus and the delay in cash retrieval, James' meaty lunch was canceled! Maybe next time when we come back in 50 years..., or so he promises me!! Goodbye to the perfect flat and we will be back ... read more

Geo: -22.9458, -43.1825Today was the day we were to venture to all of the touristy things of Rio. The stuff that you HAVE to do, but know full well thousands if other people HAVE to do it on the same day!! Deserted places were never going to happen this day!! Before the day had began I got up early to watch the sunrise as it appears over sugar loaf right outside our window. It did not disappoint! After dosing for a few more hours it was up and at it! Lucia, our guide, met us outside our apartment and we had a good old matter while we waited for the minibus. After all of the pickups, we went to a beach further along the coast, where paragliding is famous! It was £100 each to go so ... read more

Geo: -22.9458, -43.1825Today, the plan was to go and see the outside of the biggest football stadium in the world (maybe 2nd now?!) and do the lonely planets little walking tour of centro (where the Cbd of rio is)The stadium was a journey way out west on the tube, but seeing as one journey cost 75p no matter how long and James wanted to see it, it seemed silly not to go have a look see! The station related to the stadium itself was closed so a kind local with gesturing and very fast Portuguese told us to go back past it the other way again and walk up. We did, in the sun it was hot, but we could see the stadium after a few minutes wandering. We took some photos if the outside and ... read more

Geo: -22.9458, -43.1825After a doze and a read and a doze and a breakfast we decided to head for ipenema beach and have a chill out there as every after last night was not most forthcoming! I say chill out, potentially bake out with some of the stickiest sand I have ever had the delight of getting on me! (Took the power shower in the flat to get it off!!) we had more of a read, got offered water and cerveja (beer) ten million times and cocaine and 'a smoke' once!! Now due to carnival most of the cash points in common areas were rinsed which meant we were on a tight budget until we found a working cashpoint ( hoping it wasn't the card being rejected!) At our 4th attempt.... Success and seeing as we ... read more

Geo: -22.9458, -43.1825Oh my god! Amazing night! It's 6am and daylight and we have just walked through the door. James is already out for the count but I am passed tiredness now! We left about 7pm to head the the sambodrome .... Where the party is at. It's in the middle of a favela as that is where carnival began! The metro was rammed .... As would be expected and costumes were also crammed in there with their performers!!! We were in sector twelve near the end of the parade but where allocated seats rather than a free for all were! The atmosphere was electric... I'll let the pics and videos show the immense spectacular that was put on. There were 8 samba schools performing, each taking about an hr with a 30min break in the ... read more

Geo: -22.9458, -43.1825As tonight has the potential to be an all nighter, today was about eating, relaxing and sleeping in an attempt to store up some energy! It had rained overnight so the temperature was a nice 25degrees when we left the flat. There was a local side football match on the beach opposite whilst we were eating breakfast and the noise of the roadworks (cant even escape them in rio!!!) drove us out to go have a looksee! Looked like hard work to me! We found some free wifi by standing outside the mall of all places but there were travellers stood on the corner glued to their phones... Key give away!! Blog updated we decided to head back to touristville to find a proper feed and indeed we did!! £14 each all you can ... read more

Geo: -22.9457, -43.182All that we had to do today was collect our tickets for the sambadrome tomorrow, which after looking at the map in waterstones yesterday was definitely walkable! Ticket collection was from ten so we tried to have a lazy morning but were both up by 7am! Bread and Nutella for breakfast and then a walk... We didn't get lost surprisingly and found the hotel straight away. there was a lady in reception to point us in the right direction and within 5 mins we had our tickets and directions for the night! Easier than we had thought! Now to get them safely home! We decided to take the metro as its only 75p for a journey and seems the quickest way to get around the city!! It also has ac which is a bonus! ... read more

Geo: -22.9035, -43.2096James was awake with the dawn this morning!! God knows why, but the view out of our window was beautiful! After he had had a shower, he was bouncing off the walls so went to forage for breakfast whilst I eventually came around! Breakfast consisted of Ačai juice (an amazon fruit..... Blooming lovely!) and a bacon and chicken sandwich which was blooming huge!!! Job was a gooden! We proceeded to unpack, sort out washing now we were staying somewhere long enough to dry it and there was a knock on the door from the company who were taking us on the favela tour in the afternoon! We showed him the email but said give us 5 mins and we can be ready.... But a min later after a phone call he apologised and said ... read more

Geo: -22.9035, -43.2096All was not as simple as we had hoped with the transfer back to rio, as us, along with about 8 other English people were not on 'the list' for the boat, although we all had date issued tickets for that precise transfer! The man got on his phone... 15 mins later of waiting in the direct sun, he said to go back into the bar area and wait... They will go do the other pickup and then return to tell us the situation! Brilliant! Luckily it wasn't just us, so we went and shared some biscuits and waited! 30 mins later he returned telling us to get on the boat! Which now was packed to the rafters and our only real option was to sit in the sun again! Oh the joy! Luckily ... read more
