Today we rented a longtail boat for the morning so we could get out to explore Phi Phi Ley. We were hoping to get to Maya Bay before all of the day-trippers from Phuket and Krabi arrived. The beach itself is quite small and fills up with people and boats rather quickly. We ended up getting there about 10 minutes before the crowds. As a result, some of our pictures show a quiet beach while the rest show more of a zoo. Either way it was fun. Phi Phi Ley is so scenic. We explored the area and snorkled further out in the bay. Our driver took us completely around the island so we could see the other bay (LoSama) which is more fully enclosed with limestone cliffs than Maya Bay, but which lacks a real ... read more

Today we got up early to board the ferry to Phi Phi Don island. The ferry ride itself was relaxing despite being very packed with a lot of backpackers. We arrived at our Phi Phi Cabana hotel and was given a room with a great view of the bay. We then explored the main drag before heading up to the main viewpoint. The view from the top was incredible although it was low tide and so one of the bays wasn't completely full of water. At the viewpoint we met a couple from Europe who had just come to Phi Phi from some islands down by the Malaysian border. Nice couple. We talked to them as they fed some wild monkeys at one of the viewpoints. Tomorrow we have a couple of tours planned: a snorkeling ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Krabi January 23rd 2009

Our final full day at Ao Nang proved to be just another day of fun in the sun. We toured several local islands and did some snorkling along the way. It is amazing how clear and warm the water is here and the sand is like powder. For the record, we visited Pranang Beach (we saw this beach yesterday),Tup island, Chicken Island (aptly named - see photo), and Poda island. Krabi is such a tropical paradise! Tomorrow we are off to Phi Phi island for another three days of snorkling and exploring. Steven and I spent a day on Phi Phi last year and decided then that we would have to come back during our next trip to Thailand. We can't wait! Here are today's pictures...... read more

Hi All, Well after 4 flights and almost 30 hours of travel, we finally made it to our first destination - Ao Nang Beach Thailand. Our hotel is very nice and is right in the middle of things. Our first day we walked about the town to get a feel for the place. Much more low-key than Phuket but still plenty to do and see. The beach at Ao Nang itself is ok but you can take a short long-tail boat ride to the areas nicer beaches. On day two we purchased a boat ride to Railey Beach West. Wow - Now this is a nice beach! Amazing cresent beach with towering limestone cliffs plunging into turquoise water. Very relexed, mellow vibe as well - just what we were looking for. From Railey Beach West, you ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok December 23rd 2007

Well, we are finishing up these last blog entries from back home in San Diego. It was hard to find the time to update the blog during the final days of our trip since we bounced around from city to city. Nonetheless, for completeness, here is a synopsys of the final days of our trip. Vientiane, Laos - December 17th to December 18th We left Luang Prabang and headed for the Laotian capital of Vientiane. Vientaine struck me as just another prototypical Asian city. It wasn great, it wasn horrible, it just...was. We visited a few sites in Vientiane such as Wat Sisaket, Wat Ho Phra Keo, That Luang (Royal Stupa - now it used as a symbol of Laos), Patuxai (Anousavary - Victory Monument) and Wat Xieng Khouang (Budda Park) which was about 45 minutes ... read more

December 16th, 2007 to December 18th, 2007 Day 11 - Luang Prabang We left Chiang Mai on a quick flight to Luang Prabang Laos. Steven was born in Luang Prabang and still has relatives who live there. We originally visited the town a couple of years ago and I couldn’t wait to once again feel the magic of this place. I remember it as such a quaint, remote, spiritual place with such a relaxing, slow pace. Temples every where, monks wondered the streets in their orange robes; the Mekong river slowly washed itself downstream… It had a peacefulness that was really hard to capture in words alone. In the three years since our last visit however, the city seems to have become much more of a tourist haven. Wow - so many more restaurants, so many ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai December 16th 2007

Day 9 & 10 December 14th, 2007 to December 15th, 2007 After the short flight from Bangkok, we touched down in Chiang Mai and caught a cab to our hotel Yang Come Village. The hotel itself was very beautiful with very lush landscaping and lighting. The other nice thing about this hotel is that it is right around the corner from Chiang Mai’s Night Bazaar. The downside to our particular room was that it was full of mosquitoes. Each night we spend about an hour mosquito hunting before going to bed. We couldn’t figure out how they were getting into the room until we were about to check out when I noticed the bathroom vent did not have a screen on the outside. Anytime the bathroom light was turned on, the fan would also come on ... read more

Phang Nga Bay and Coral Island - Day 6, 7 & 8 December 10th, 2007 to December 12th, 2007 I’m sitting on the plane putting this blog entry together as Steven and I are heading north to Chiang Mai. This marks the end of the hedonistic, fun-in-the-sun leg of our trip. I miss Patong already! This flight itself was a bit of an adventure as Air Asia re-scheduled our flight a few hours later which meant we would miss a scheduled event. After a few quick adjustments, we were back on target as we quickly dumped our Air Asia flight and booked a last minute flight with Thai Airways. Was actually kind of fun figuring out how to make things work out under such time pressure. Steven called it our “Amazing Race” incident. Anyway, back to ... read more
