Phang Nga Bay and Coral Island - Day 6, 7 & 8
December 10th, 2007 to December 12th, 2007
I’m sitting on the plane putting this blog entry together as Steven and I are heading north to Chiang Mai. This marks the end of the hedonistic, fun-in-the-sun leg of our trip. I miss Patong already! This flight itself was a bit of an adventure as Air Asia re-scheduled our flight a few hours later which meant we would miss a scheduled event. After a few quick adjustments, we were back on target as we quickly dumped our Air Asia flight and booked a last minute flight with Thai Airways. Was actually kind of fun figuring out how to make things work out under such time pressure. Steven called it our “Amazing Race” incident.
Anyway, back to Phuket. We did have a chance to go on a few more tours though before leaving. On Tuesday, we toured through Phang Nga bay and canoed through a number of lagoons which were encircled by limestone cliffs. The caves themselves were interesting and the trip was very relaxing since we didn’t actually row the boat - our guide did. That’s my kind
of canoeing! During this excursion, we also visited James Bond Island - the island made popular in the movie Man With the Golden Gun. Wasn’t really much to see there and the island is actually very small. The locals call it “Nail Island.” They didn’t say the name of the island from which you view Nail Island but I think an appropriate name would be “Vendor Island.” When we were there, there were easily more vendors than tourists. At the end of the tour we visited a Muslim fishing village. That was much more interesting than James Bond Island as you got a chance to see a very different way of life.
The next day we took a half-day tour to Coral Island. After snorkeling off of Phi Phi island a few days before, I couldn’t wait to get back into the water. Unfortunately, Coral Island was no Phi Phi island. Despite its name, Coral Island had much less interesting coral to explore. Nonetheless, there were plenty of colorful fish to see so we made the best it.
Once we got back from Coral Island, I finally took the plunge and tried a jet ski. I’ve always wanted
to ride one of those but never had the nerve to expose myself to those frigid waters surrounding San Diego. Wow - those things are like riding a rocket. I didn’t realize they went that fast and I rented the smaller, girly one.
With only 6 days in southern Thailand, we really didn’t have enough time to explore all areas we wanted to see. Two spots we missed where Krabi and the Samilian Islands - both of which are now officially on our top 5 list for next time. Although we will miss Phuket, we are looking forward to Chiang Mai as we’ve heard so many good things about it. Until next time…
