Asia » Vietnam » Mekong River Delta » Tien Giang March 31st 2015

After an hour and 1/2 bus ride we boarded a boat to an island in the Mekong River. Pictures tell the story of what we saw. Our guide explained that the women in Viet Nam cover themselves because they want to have pale skin. They even wear socks with their flip flops. The number of scooters is astounding and you do need a license here but they use both sides of the road so they don’t let foreigners drive on their own. Our guide also explained that Vietnam is experiencing prosperity and people are very positive about their future and improvement day by day. Did sense some bitterness with the North as they changed their capital city from Saigon to Hanoi and changed the name. He said Ho Chi Minh city is for paper only. It ... read more

Early breakfast and out by 8:00 a.m. for a full day of temple visits. Two temples in the morning - Angkor Thom complex and Ta Prohm Temple which was the scene of the movie “Tomb Raider.” Buffet lunch in a nice hotel restaurant and then onto Banter Srei and Angkor Wat. Weather was in the high nineties. Headed to the lounge for beer and appetizers for dinner. We were in bed by 8:30pm.... read more

Flew Cambodia airlines today to Siem Reap arriving late in the afternoon. We were given time for a little rest after checking into our hotel Le Meridian. Boarded a bus to another hotel for another magical evening of outdoor dining around a pool accompanied by Apsara & folk dancing, music and good company. Dinner was a buffet with a varied selection of mouth watering food but oh the surroundings - just beautiful. They were celebrating earth day and all the hotels participated by turning off their lights and lighting candles for 1 hour at 8:30pm. Our hotel offered complimentary drinks during that time so we had a nightcap in the candlelight and went to bed.... read more

Today’s tour started at 1:00pm with a drive by bus through Chinatown. Disembarking in the flower district, we walked several blocks through stalls and stalls of people making flower decorations. They were beautiful and looked tedious to make and sold for very little. Next we hopped on a tuk-tuk which derives its name from the sound it makes. Thankfully we survived that experience as they drive rather erratically here. It is probably more dangerous as a pedestrian, a truck backing up very nearly hit me. Was looking forward to the huge reclining buddha but he is encased by the building and it is difficult to see him all at once as there are pillars in front of him, thus the long shot of buddha from his feet. Of course a tour wouldn’t be complete without entrapping ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville March 26th 2015

Grabbed our beach towels and snorkeling gear to meet our group for a private tour of Sihanoukville, Cambodia this morning. We walked a long distance to meet our transportation as the port area is restricted. Michael from Australia greeted us and showed us to a broken down, rust bucket of a van. The harbor he brought us to wasn’t any more attractive, in fact it was worse! Strewn with garbage and completely down trodden, we marched our way through and onto the pier in the hopes of finding something better awaiting us. NOT! Still the boat was adequate and we had a great adventure on the rough ride to an island. The water was very cloudy and seemed polluted, the beach on the island was strewn with litter although we did not go ashore. We snorkeled ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Ko Samui March 25th 2015

After a relaxing day at sea, we were up and at em for a day of circling the island of Ko Samui to take an elephant ride, watch a demonstration of a monkey retrieving coconuts (trained to do so because they are faster and more adept than people), watched an elephant do some tricks and visited a waterfall nearby. A cooking demonstration was thrown in for good measure (Papaya Salad) but I don’t think we will be trying it at home. Next stop was a rubber tree demonstration- fascinating to see the liquid pour out of the tree to eventually become a tire. Big export here along with coconuts. Then it was time for lunch which was at a beautiful seaside location. Picture of the setting below but what we didn’t take was the pile of ... read more

Asia » Singapore » Singapore Harbour March 23rd 2015

We bid a fond farewell to Singapore tonight! It was a wonderful introduction to our Asian portion of the cruise. The country is in mourning as their First Prime Minister died today; he was 91 years old and had brought Singapore from an undeveloped country beautiful, modern, clean and safe place, not to mention financial and shipping hub. We toured with a group from the ship today to the river for a short boat cruise along the historic area followed by a trishaw ride through the India section of town. A stop at the infamous Raffles hotel was next for our Singapore Sling and back to the ship. Cable cars span over the ship to Sentosa Island where Universal Studios has a complex and to Haber Mountain. We just rode the cable car over to Sentosa, ... read more

After breakfast we went on a hunt for vodka, not an easy task in Singapore. After walking two malls, the deed was accomplished and we were ready to check out of the Pan Pacific hotel and board the bus to the Insignia. Our cabin was filled with luggage (4 huge bags, 2 medium and 2 small) and left little walking space, but since it was time for lunch, we left that chore for later to gain strength for the task at hand. Two hours later we were organized and pleased with the results. We were ready for 109 days of life aboard Insignia and a glass of beer.... read more

Out on the street at 8:00 am this morning as the humidity is quite oppressive. First stop was The Gardens by the Bay which is a huge complex that can be walked for free along part of a man made river with an assortment of native flora. The paying parts of the garden were a Skywalk, Flower Dome and Cloud Forest. Hours were spent enjoying what surely must be every plant in the world! So happy to see a tulip exhibit but most have not bloomed yet. Next stop Sky Park above the Marina Bay Sands Hotel - 57 stories above the ground. Best view of Singapore from here. Back to our hotel for a siesta and dinner with cruise mates we met two years ago from Ottawa, Canada who are also taking this cruise.... read more

Lucked out today when we arrived at the Singapore Flyer early in the morning. We were able to board our own capsule (usually holding 28 people) and get the most awesome view of Singapore. The humidity is so high here that after walking around we were quite wet and decided to cool off by the pool. We will be out even earlier tomorrow in order to not be overcome by heat.... read more
