Flying from Los Angeles to Dallas was a fairly short flight, so I was ready to go exploring upon arrival. I immediately noticed just how flat the terrain was... and how few trees there were! Having just left California and the crammed space.. and growing up in Georgia with trees and hills everywhere, it was a bit strange. I was left with the feeling a baby must have when they suddenly realize they are no longer wrapped up tight in the blankets and are left with nothing but space around them. I was staying with a friend, so of course the first thing we HAD to do was go to a real Texas steakhouse! A bit skeptical at this whole "Texas is best" mentality, I do have to give them credit.. the meal wasn't so bad ... read more

It was the time of year that everyone counts down the days to... Spring Break! And being that it was my fifth year of college - I knew it would be my last REAL chance at a true spring break before joining the "real world". Having never been further West than Alabama at this point, I knew exactly where I needed to go - California! I made arrangements to stay with a good friend of mine, Chris, and managed to line up part of the trip with some fellow friends from home to fly in together and spend the first day there all in a mini-reunion. We had a blast! With only three hours of sleep, Myself, Hiral, Craig, Brad, and Theresa left for the Atlanta airport to catch our 9am flight. We arrived into Los ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Viareggio August 5th 2005

Viareggio was the closest beach to florence, only an hour by train, so I went to this beach three times! (Once in June, once in July, and once in August.. the day before I was to return to the states.) It's a pretty busy beach so if you arrive after lunch time, and it's a busy day, you might have to walk for a while down the beach to find an available bano. Bano doesn't always mean bathrooms.. in this case.. it's an area you rent umbrellas from... which you have to do if you want to be on this beach! Included in the rental are the area's facilities, which are nice. There's areas off the sand for eating, you can get little storage rooms for changing and locking up your items, access to a shower ... read more

I actually went twice while studying in Florence. Once at the beginning of July and then again at the end of the month right before returning stateside. The beach is beautiful, and nestled right up against the rocks. The "sand area" is a combination of sand and then rocks along the water's edge. I brought back a bunch of tiny rocks and plan on getting them polished because they are all beautiful and completely different colors, I've never seen anything like it! Monterosso really isn't that far from Florence, especially for the view! It takes about 1 1/2 hours worth of train rides... with a frantic transfer thrown in there as well. The first time I went, my jaw dropped as the train went along the side of the mountain.. seeing the pure blue water out ... read more

I'd had my eye on a flier at the school for a few weeks that I'd been told about for horseback riding and I knew I had to get a group together to go. It included wine tasting, 2 hours with the horses, and then A POOL! The weather had been really hot all summer, and without any air conditioning, we were all desperate for a relaxing day in a pool without a beach involved. I rounded up 2 of my roomates: Lindsey and Leslie, and got Kevin and Brittany to come up from Montepulciano with his brother Calvin, and a friend in their program down there - Anna. Our group was set! We met Sam, our contact for the day, in Florence and all hopped in the minivan to head out to the grounds where ... read more

Europe » Vatican City July 29th 2005

It was 8:30am or so when Katie, Sarah, and I found ourselves outside of the Vatican. There was a nearby free tour about to begin, but after realizing just how slow it would be, we quickly broke away. Apparantly, we beat the crowds through the whole experience because we went straight into St. Peters, and then the museum afterwards. The church was absolutely amazing. I was burning up, because I'd worn a halter top that day and had to cover my shoulders up in the heat with the sweater I had with me. It's considered disrespectful to show knees/shoulders in these places. Once inside, I was suprised at the different areas within that you could worship in, and there was also a communion being given while we were there. There were confession booths scattered about, each ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Rome July 29th 2005

It was already the end of July and time was quickly running out for me and my roommates stay in Italy. So, like any sane person would do.. we decided to challenge ourselves to seeing Rome in a day. Myself, Sarah, and Katie caught the 5:55am train from Florence to Rome and arrived 2 or 2.5 hours later. We knew we were going to be rushed for time, so we caught a cab and went straight to Vatican City/Holy See. (See my other journal entry about this.) Upon leaving Vatican city, we caught another cab (I know.. I know...) and found ourselves at the Pantheon. It's always amazing to see things in person that you've read about in school year after year.. and Rome was full of these feelings for me. The Pantheon was much like ... read more

Images taken in Berlin. Many of these are from areas where graffiti is allowed. One area seemed to actually encourage it on the "privacy fence" put up around construction, because of the skill of art present and also because there were actually youths working on pieces in the daylight.... read more

Europe » Germany » Berlin » Berlin July 9th 2005

We arrived into Berlin around 2pm after our 5 1/2 trainride in from Amsterdam (Which is the fastest train we could get!) They checked passports every 45 minutes to an hour while on the train, which didn't allow for much sleep, but I'm sure it had to do with the bombings just 2 days prior in London. After checking our passports 4 times, they stopped bothering us everytime they came through. There was a little bit of confusion once we got into the general area, but we figured out the city trains/subway pretty quickly and navigated into the area of Berlin our hostel was at. "Helter Skelter". The quality of accomodations was the lowest of our trip, but the location was decent for us and it was still a private room, which is what we were ... read more
