For Chris's Grandparent's anniversary, we joined his family and headed to the Atlanta Botanical Gardens as a group. The gardens are located next to Piedmont park, and I honestly had never known they were even there. The facilities were amazing. We began our self guided 'tour' by visiting all the outside area's, and then working our way into the buildings with the more exotic plants. One even had birds running around among the foliage. The highlight for the group was the large room with more varieties of Orchids than I thought ever existed. One of my personal favorites was the children's garden area. (I will always be a kid at heart) and that the entire facility had large wooden 'sculptures' of insects scattered around for photo ops. The $12 admission might be considered a bit steep, ... read more

Myself and Chris decided that a day trip to Savannah would be a great way to spend a beautiful Saturday. I don't recommend this after having done it. We had pleny of time to see everything, however with the driving and seeing everything.. it was just a bit too much that we asked of ourselves. We arrived into Savannah around 3:30 after our visit to Tybee Island (see other entry). Armed with a map, our first stop was in Forsyth square. This is the biggest square in the town and was full of locals (there is a college nearby) and visitors. There were fields with people playing frisbee, soccer, and other games. There were even tennis and basketball courts. Trees filled with Spanish Moss hung over the sidewalks and monuments honored men from the past. There ... read more

Since myself and Chris had plans to see Savannah for the day, we also decided to see the Lighthouse as well. It was an additional 30 minute drive, but was nice to have another area to see since we were already looking at a daytrip involving 4+ hours of driving each way. (We later decided this wasn't the smartest of day trip decisions.) The lighthouse is set back from the beach, where suprisingly, many were sunbathing this day. I had only been to the area once, when I was in 8th grade, and my memory just held a cold windy day - not one fully of warmth and sunshine like this new day provided. A structure sits between the lighthouse and the ocean, it's an old fort, with a portion of it currently used as a ... read more

Central America Caribbean January 26th 2007

January is definately the time to go on a cruise - especially since we realized that there were numerous options for 4 and 5 day cruises for $199! Myself and Chris has planned on taking a cruise at the end of March or early April, but jumped at the chance to get the same cruise for over 1/2 the price! All that being said, here's my account of our 5 day "Western Carribean" cruise to Cozumel, and what would have been Costa Maya (read on...), leaving from Mobile, Alabama. We left out of Atlanta on Saturday morning, the day our cruise was to leave, and due to the 75/85 split not being as clear as it could have been, we went 30 miles the wrong direction before realizing our error. Luckily, the extra hour we added ... read more

North America » Mexico » Quintana Roo » Tulum January 23rd 2007

(This entry is a stop on the cruise that is discussed in THIS ENTRY: ) We arrived into Cozumel where we took a (very quick) ferry to Playa Del Carmen. A bus ride later, we arrived at the ruins in Tulum. I think I was expecting to only see a couple buildings, based of images I had seen online, so I was rather suprised at the amount of structures that were present. Tulum is a city with 3 walls and a cliffside/water serving as the 4th wall. There are a total of 7 entrances into the city on those 3 walls. (This is an excellent image I found that maps the structures: CLICK FOR MAP) The building that demands the most attention sits on a hill, the castillo. It was here that they believe the human ... read more

This entry will be a combination entry from 2 different trips. May 2006: World of Coca-Cola / Olympic Park January 7, 2007: Georgia Aquarium / The Varsity / Random Atlanta Pictures. ...and so I begin, with the recent trip being the first I will talk about! The Georgia Aquarium is an AMAZING facility! There are touch pools where you can get 'hands on' with Sting Rays, Shrimp, StarFish, and other critters. (I declined on touching the shrimp... that's just gross!) There are areas where you can watch sea otters and sea lions at play. You can stick your head into a dome in the penguin exibit. Not to mention Beluga whales! There are currently 3... one passed away last week unfortunately. (It had been rescued from unfavorable conditions as a part of a theme park in ... read more

North America » United States » Tennessee » Gatlinburg October 22nd 2006

It's a family tradition... one that began before I was even born when my parents honeymooned in the fun little mountain town. Many years have passed, and here I am 23 years old, and the family still continues to make the yearly drive up into the mountains to celebrate each passing anniversary that finds my parents. Gatlinburg is mostly a tourist town, clinging to the smells of hot chocolate, fudge, and the history of panning for gold, and nearby indian reservations, and the bears who wander around nearby. You can shop for mementos of the trip, people watch, or just enjoy all the touristy attractions - it seems as if Ripley's museums own half the city!... read more

In North Georgia there is a little Alpine Village called Helen seemingly lost in America, but full of good times - partly because it hosts the popular Oktoberfest festival right in the backyard of many other major cities. Walking down the streets allow for many opportunities to duck your head into Northern European shops, get your fill of fudge and other sweets, and of course digest quite a few wursts! Myself, my boyfriend Chris, and my newly married best friends, Kevin & Brittany headed up to North Georgia for the day looking to enjoy the honored tradition of Oktoberfest where it is a requirement to drink beer out of oversized cups and enjoy fellowship with complete strangers (which we did!), but along the way, we had a quick detour... Graduating from the Univeristy of Georgia brings back many good memories. This artistic town always had something new and interesting to bring to the table, I'll always remember the many nights out with friends on the town enjoying the bar crawl environment, as well as the warm sunny days studying on North Campus.
