Well, not that much to share with you today. Uneventful drive from Yosemite to SF - all fine until a real traffic snarl at the SF end trying to cross the bay. I paid a toll (no idea how much - that little joy is still in store), and still we were stuck in 5 lanes on a Saturday afternoon. Anyway, hotel seems ok and well located. Before we left, we headed off to the south entrance to Yosemite to check out the giant sequoia trees. Fabulous these - the largest at our location was 8.5 metres across at the base (see pic with Chris). It took a while to get there and back and added substantially to the drive, but was worth it. Before we left we took some more pics at Yosemite Bug Resort ... read more

Hi Ya'll We have seen some wonderful things over the past 4 weeks but we need to say, Yosemite tops the lot. Now admittedly the weather has been good to us, but really, this place has to be seen to be believed. Rain is expected tomorrow BTW! WE have walked all day in the park and finished up by a late afternoon drive up to Glacier Point for an oversight on this wonderful place. I seem to be making a lot of excuses, but digital photography does not do it justice. Now we supposedly have not visited inb the best time as when the winter rains come, the waterfalls flow. But there was a spate of snow a couple of weeks ago (we were in Lake Placid remember) and that snow has all melted with the ... read more

Hello again You now find us in (well more correctly just outside) Yosemite National Park. Our trip today was relatively uneventful and unspectacular. It took us past the Edwards Air force Base so we had some fun watching various manoeuvres along the way, and the most massive farm of wind generators we have ever seen, in the Southern Sierra Nevada Mountains. Our journey took us through Fresno which is a major agricultural centre - if the road proximity is any indication, it is primarily wine and citrus. In any event, the smog for about 2 hours was unbelievable. Presumably that finds its way inland from LA, but it is a disgrace and they should do something about it. I need to talk about petrol (Gasoline) - not least because we almost ran out today looking for ... read more

Well today we had a travel day - but we managed to squeeze in a 2hr (that turned out to be a 3 hr) walk in the Zion National Park on the Kolob Plateau. This had the advantage of taking us away from the masses of Europeans that have invaded Zion (this walk is a bit more remote) - and lifting us above the canyon and giving wonderful perspectives of the park. The walk on the high plains among the Ponderosa Pines and the Oak bush above the snow line was fabulous. As you will see from the pics, your correspondents also had some fun with the cameras. We drove on through Las Vegas (that was interesting among the heavy traffic even though we stayed on Interstate 15) and tonight we are staying in Barstow. Now ... read more

Gday all Another great day here. As you will see from the pics, the weather keeps being very kind to us - clear blue skies and pleasant temperature once the morning frost and ice melted! We started the day in Bryce Canyon in Southern Utah (this is one pretty part of the country). The park itself is famous for its ‘hoodoos’ - crazy rock formations that are best understood by looking at the pics. Today was a walking day so we checked out a few rim vantage points and then went down into the canyon on a 6 (or so) km trail. OK going down but a little tougher ascending. Still we managed - and more importantly, thoroughly enjoyed. The Hoodoos are a lot like ‘the Pinnacles’ (a far better name - that we flew over ... read more

So today we tour the Antelope Slot Canyon. Slot - because that is what they are. There are 2 - ann upper and a lower. We settle on an upper with a couple of hundred others. The lower is accessible only from the top and you need to climb down various ladders to get in. The upper is more accessible as you walk straight in. There is not much room in either of them, and we suffer two compromises - it is the wrong time of the year for the sun to ignite the colours properly and we have too many friends joining us. For all of that, we managed some reasonable shots that show off the colours somewhat. There are many tour çompanies that lead these tours and we chose one that is headed by ... read more

It was a pleasure to awaken to a crisp clear and still morning - with the sun just darting around one of the Mesas immediately outside our balcony. Beautiful hotel this one - run bu Navajo inside the Navajo tribal area. Great but hurried breakfast as we had booked a tour ofr 8. 45 thinking it was 7.30, and when we got down to breakfast, our guide was waiting there wondering where we were. Now this takes some explaining! To get to Monument Valley, you cross (just) from Arizona into Utah. Then in the 4 mile road to the hotel, you cross back into Arizona. There is (at this time of the year until Nov 7),1 hours time difference between the 2 states. As instructed, we had both adjusted our watches to the correct time. Problem ... read more

Just loving this road trip! Kicked off the day with the promised chopper flight over the Grand Canyon. Spectacular!! Perfect Day (bit windy that later became a hurricane but OK for the flight) - loverly clear sky. Then on the road to Monument Valley and surprised that the trip out followed the Canyon for 60 miles so more vistas (and different) to take in. The wind came up just as we crossed the Little Colorade River - at an Indian trinket stop site. Nice guy - Viet Vet. went to Melb and Sydney on R&R - (most have never heard of Melbourne.....) Arrived in Monument Valley to a Gale - but still magnificent vistas. The hotel here The View - aptly named - is on the Navajo reservation. Trip Adviser has come thru again. No alcohol ... read more

Not much to report today. Just a perfect day around and in the Grand Canyon. Weather was magnificent and this place is amazing. Now Chris and I took nearly 200 pics between us - and I have to say that none of them does it justice. You just have to see it - for the size, the colour, the variation etc. ....... However, we have cobbled together a few for your perusal - including the ones where we walked down into the canyon (and back) - and that was great fun and a little bit challenging. With that walk - along with the rim walking we did, we managed about 16 kms - so are pretty tired. Early tomoz for a chopper flight then off to Monument Valley - where we are staying in a hotel ... read more

Hello all Fun day today. Early start with a predictable fight with the rental car company as they substituted a 6 cyl Chevvy Impala with a 4 cyl Camry. Jeez I hate these guys. Hertz this time but it really makes no difference. They are all as bad as one another and they know you need the car TODAY so they screw you. Anyway, they threw in at no charge a GPS (big deal - didn’t need one) and the extra driver charge. And at least the Camry has a familiar feel about it …….. So then driving on ‘the other side’ for 440 kms. NO SWEAT! Chris was so confident she slept most of the way. Had to wake her up for the Boulder / Hoover dam visit. That thing is huge = and the ... read more
