Well this final (for now at least) blog is being completed at home in sunny Glen waverley. Relatively uneventful trip home - although mid stream in the long flight Chris was called upon to tend an unwell patient and predictably stepped up. Lady recovered quite well and was able to continue on in the Qantas flight into Melbourne. Very sad farewells at Auckland Airport, and for once, I do believe that certain members of the group will in fact keep in touch and catch up on occasions where circumstances permit. As promised, in this final blog, I have included Mike's Ditty for all to enjoy - and reflect on the messages contained therin. For Chis' and my part, we would like to sincerely thank Ted and Judy and all of the other participants, for making this ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas November 6th 2008

OK OK 2 in 1 day Now Puerto Varas is not necessarily our favourite place. Nothing much to do and it P1sst rain most of the day (yeah, I know, only the second day in 35 (disregarding the snowing and the blizzard)). But Helen decided that we should have a formal farewell dinner, and nobody wanted to argue. For our part, Pete, Chris and your correspondent scanned ALL of the restaurants in the area last night, and found what we thought was a beauty. Meantime, the trusty Valda happened upon the German club in the town and most others went there last night. In its own right it seems that it was quite a good night - but nobody spoke English - and nobody spoke German. Go figure! So tonight we headed off to “Chamaca Inn” ... read more

South America » Chile » Los Lagos » Puerto Varas November 5th 2008

You now find us in Puerto Varas - our last stay in the continent before heading home tomorrow night. We did the 2 day Andean crossing from Barilche tp Puerto Varas, stopping at the hamlet of Puella in between. The crossing on the Argentinian side is spectacular as you hop from bus to boat to bus to boat to bus, passing though two lakes, one huge and one smaller but originating in a glacier and therefor a bright turquise colour. Some spectcular scenery - followed up by more land based on the Chilean side. Puella is the original one horse town(we couldnt even find one!) But it has 2 hotels seemingly just for crossing traffic. We stay in the newer and better of the two. It was great - but there wer only16 people staying there. ... read more

Bariloche We arrive in Bariloche and Peter’s bags are successfully re-united with him. The flight was attractive as it skirted the Andes all the way (90 minutes) and provided some good views, but the worn windows on the ageing MD80 didn’t allow any clear photos. We check into our hotel - the Panamericano Casino and Resort. The sign on the front door indicated 5 stars, and this place may have been - but that would have been at least 20 years ago, and the place is at least 10 years overdue for a full refurbishment. All have problems with our rooms - but Helen and Richards is one of the worst, with the cigarette smell so bad the hotel conceded that it couldn’t be got out and agreed to a relocation. Colin and Natalie’s room had ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate November 2nd 2008

Calafate 2 I have first shower this morning before the others are awake, and Chris comes running in. IT’S BEEN SNOWING! I dry off and poke my head out of there to find the area covered in a white blanket of snow, but with a clear blue sky. Further dark clouds on the horizon though …… Weird because this is spring going on summer and not expected. Another good breakfast and much speculation as to what the day would deliver as we head off to our 2nd day of glacier viewing. As we leave the dark clouds turn to further snow. This is great fun as the further we drive, the heavier the snowing gets. Further speculation as to whether or not we would get out of the van when we get to the glacier as ... read more

South America » Argentina » Santa Cruz » El Calafate November 2nd 2008

And so, Calafate - First thing to say is that the internet connection in the Hotel was so spasmodic, and we were so tired from touring, I couldn’t be bothered with the blog while there. I am now diligently working in the plane (another MD80 from Austral), on the way to Bariloche. So much happened in Calafate, that I will try to keep it in sequence (and cram it into two blogs). First night arrival. Lovely hotel, high on a hill out of town. Pleasingly however, they have a half hourly shuttle, and it is just as well, as the food costs have been put together by the caterers from Iguaçu Falls! We jump on the shuttle because it is a Ted 15 minute walk (read 50 minutes) into town. The wind on this first night ... read more

South America October 31st 2008

In Buenos Aeries again today, and while there was a full day tour, it was a relaxing tour designed to allow us all to recharge our batteries. Not quite sure that it worked as we are all pretty tired. Anyway, nice bus ride thru the northern suburbs of BA to the quiet affluent suburb of San Isidro. Went thru a Museum and yes, a Cathedral there too, before jumping on a train along the coast to the river delta at Tigris. There we had a relaxing boat ride thru the canals past extremely wealthy clubs and houses as well as a wide range of weekenders to a surprise luncheon at a lovely restaurant called the White Cat. Really nice 3 courses but the highlight was a great ice cream cake with chocolate sauce. (I know, I’m ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires October 29th 2008

Ok 2 in one day! What a night. Off to the Tango show. I had read disparaging reports on the internet about this place. How wrong! Hall was great, food was magnificent, unlimited wine was included and the show with plenty of female extremities on display was more than excellent. The guys were good too but its not Kosher to mention that! Late dinner (Pete and Chris brought back 8 beers from their shopping 'spree'! so that was a good start.) Food: Crab on Guacomole CousCous (sp?) was fantastic, followed by a legendary (by now) Argentinian steak that you couldnt jump over and that melted in your mouth. Desert for me was a chocolate mousse with pistachio on top while Chris had an ice cream with mascapone cheese on a biscuit of some sort. They even ... read more

South America » Argentina » Buenos Aires » Buenos Aires October 28th 2008

Reputed to be a little like Paris, Buenos Aeries is indeed a little like the Paris I recall from my visit (in 1972!). While we were scheduled for a Tango Show dinner last night, they sensibly moved it because of a late afternoon flight from Foz Iguacu. We didnt get in until after 6.30 so it would have been a bit of a rush. A quick walk around the hotel area and Chris Peter and I settled for a meal in the local food court. Chris and Pete had a Grande Hamburger with chips and a small bottle of wine (beer in pate's case) for about $9. I went with the Parilla Ribs - 2 huge ribs cooked on a large ash BBQ with chips and beer of course, and mine was $13. Magnificent taste. These ... read more

Gday again Well today was the day that the weather caught up with us. In the National park, we are in a rain forest. We had plans to go to the Argentine side, walk over and beneath the falls, then do the jet boat ride under the water. We did all of that - and we knew that we would get wet in the boat. What we didnt know was that the skies would open up and drench us before we even got anywhere near the falls. It was all good fun but following on from last night, your correspondent was a little seedy and forgot to pack his cape. Not to worry. 12 Reais later (about $8) I had a flimsy white plastic cape like another 5000 walkers - all of whom got soaked despite ... read more
