Geo: 0.20874, 36.1395It was good to leave Uganda behind, it was strange how we kept having to traverse through Kampala and Jinga, it seemed that we were travelling without going anywhere. Kenya is a complete surprise all the time. We must be completely ignorant of what to expect so are constantly amazed at what we experience. Any way back to the story.. Into Kenya and headed towards lake Bogoria.. Magic drive up and down mountains all day with a max altitude of 2390mtrs.. In one day we have passed through something that reminded us of English countryside, followed by a huge escarpment, then something that looked like the Gammon Ranges, followed by a Desert area, and finishing with an area that was in flash flood. Houses completely surrounded by water. Crazy country.Lisa started to get a ... read more

Geo: 0.315556, 32.5656We had met a group of overlanders travelling together whilst we were in Kampala. One German, one Mexican and two Canadians, strange but true. The Mexican was travelling on a motor bike, the German was alone in the most technologically advanced Toyota Landcruiser that he could buy fully kitted with all the bells and whistles even had a Paraglider packed within. I joke not!! At one stage he needed to drill a hole and delved deep within the various storage racks within and produced no other than a top of the range cordless drill (German of course.. Bosh) the other couple Nic and Ian are travelling the same way into Ethiopia that we are intending, the other two are heading down.We intend to meet up with Ian & Nic in Nairobi once we get ... read more

Geo: 2.41079, 31.7148We drove up to Murchison Falls which is a 6m wide gap that the Nile flows through. Unfortunately the North of Uganda is still not a safe happy place (borders Sudan and the Congo) so this is as far north as we were prepared to go. Interestingly the drive up was so quiet on the road that it was relaxing and unsettling at the same time. The falls was as you would expect impressive, see pics' but it was interestingly the camp site that we will remember. We have got better at chasing off monkey packs intent on stealing anything edible. We have a stick ready to go and are on to them, this place however caught us off guard as we were the subject of wart hog attack. These guys managed to steal a ... read more

Geo: -1.20566, 29.6576Point number 14 on the permit stated…. Gorilla tracking can be challenging and you need to be reasonably fit … the place we were heading to is called Bwindi Impenetrable forest.. the funny thing is we did not notice these important points prior to heading out to track mountain gorillas. In hind sight the two adjectives we needed to be aware of were … mountain & impenetrable…The brochure also says… Bwindi is 327 square km of tangled vegetation draped over a deeply fissured landscape of steep slippery valleys and high draughty ridges… I cannot think of a more apt description. Sadly, there are only 760 Mountain Gorillas left in the world, so this also does not make them easy to find.Spike you would have been impressed, this is the hardest climbing I have ever ... read more

Geo: -1.25418, 29.9928Had an early morning start as we had to drive 50km in very mountainous terrain, average altitude is 1900mtrs. The drive took us into some magnificent country through little villages. Unbeknown to us tourism into this area is relatively new thus people were having a good look.. one lady even ran away then stopped to have a look, I gave her a big wave and all was forgiven. The track is very good considering the terrain we were lucky our drive in was dry.. however once we arrived at the camp site the clouds rolled in and a thunderstorm started.. hence writing this blog in the early afternoon. The roof top tent is holding up well and has not leaked at all.The forest we are going to walk in was part of the forest ... read more

Geo: 0.314269, 32.5729The Capital of Uganda, surly such a small country would have a sedate capital city.. It was a lazy 135km to Kampala so we headed out and made it in good time.. wow this is an old city thus the small streets are crazy and do not always pop out where the map indicates.. Found a great Indian restaurant and headed to the Uganda Wildlife Authority to book a visit to the Gorillas easy, we are booked in for Tuesday. Very exited. The group we will try to find has 34 females and 3 Silverbacks.. Found a shopping mall and stocked up and headed to the Backpackers Camping Ground.. wow nice setting with trees and a few stinky backpackers.. one in particular I think has been in Africa too long.... read more

Geo: 0.447036, 33.2115Customs & Immigration into Uganda was a breeze, we decided to stop over at a town called Jinga which was a short drive thus ensuring the day did not blow out into a last minute dash before night fall to find a camp.Unbeknown to us Jinga is the designated start of the Nile river, humm should have known that!! We camped at Eden Rocks Campsite perched on top of a cliff overlooking the first set of rapids as the Nile blasts out of lake Victoria. Awesome.. Also unbeknown to us the camp site was the resting place for volunteers to help with the SoftPower thing.. yep meant nothing to me either.. I bumped into an Australian Lady who had just arrived for a 6 week volunteer stretch to teach locals how to fire pottery ... read more

Geo: -0.0935, 34.7556We had been tipped off by Customs officials in the Serengeti that the gate we had chosen to exit would put our exit route to the border through an unsafe region. The Masai were fighting with their neighbouring tribe which was enough of an incentive for us to use a more Southern Gate. This meant an extra 145 Kms on Serengeti roads, tackling oncoming safari vehicles and serious corrugations but we both agreed this was the lesser of two evils. We eventually made it back to tarmac and stopped in a roadside camp to prepare ourselves for the border the next day. We have learnt that borders are best tackled when we are fresh, organised and psychologically prepared for the bureaucracy. The following day we headed for the Kenyan border. Tanzania has not been our ... read more
