It's not often that you get to visit a country for a day. Some do it on a visa run, some so that they can tick it off their country list. For us it was because of family and volcanic mist. The eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland had caused all flights in and out of Europe to be cancelled. This quite unprecedented occurrence meant that nobody knew when they would be able to fly. Last time it happened the eruption lasted two years. Only a few days prior we had watched the shocking red shirt riots in Bangkok. We had joked at the time that they should call work and say that they could not return due to the protests in Bangkok. Then a volcano erupted. It was just meant to be. Meanwhile Hannah ... read more

Asia » Thailand » North-West Thailand » Chiang Mai April 21st 2010

As we drove through the streets of Chiang Mai, the second city of Thailand, we were surprised at how smoggy it was. I don't really understand why it is like this although probably it's a combination of pollution, heat haze, and the continuous fire setting in surrounding forests. Still, the city was lovely, we based ourselves inside the old moated area which seemed to be a maze of nice back lanes filled with beautiful temples, tasty restaurants, and friendly faces. The first hotel we stayed at was called Ping Buri and was spacious, stylish and conveniently close to the main hospital. Lewi and I took the opportunity to have our persistently upset stomachs looked at. At our follow up examination the next day the hospital staff were preparing for an afternoon Songkran party: dressed in their ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Western Thailand » Kanchanaburi April 21st 2010

Having left the scenic yet very sweaty train journey behind we caught a no less sweaty swangthaew (van-taxi) to Blue Star Guesthouse on the banks of the river Kwai in Kanchanaburi. Gordon had booked us into some beautiful wooden bungalows with air con and a balcony that overlooked lotus flower swamps. Kanchanaburi felt relaxed and at ease with itself. No touts or go-go bars just a few guesthouses, travel agents and the ever pleasurable 7-eleven nearby (as all 7-eleven's seem to be) for that refreshing Beer Chang that could be enjoyed by the river for sunset. The next day we hired two longtail boats to take us on a tour down the river. However these were no ordinary longtail boats, they were longtail powerboats. The wind was certainly in our hair as we raced along the ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok April 21st 2010

We returned excitedly to Bangkok, driving through big rainstorms on the way and settled back into our home-from-home the lovely River Guest House. Mum, Gordon, Harri, Jess and Flo would be arriving in a couple of days, it was mind blowing to think that 6 months had passed since we left home and so very shortly they would be here, with us, in Bangkok! Lew and I had some jobs to sort out before everyone arrived, applying for Vietnamese visas, extending our Thai ones, and checking up on the political situation between the Government and the democracy fighters the 'Red Shirts'. Until recently the protests had been non violent and negotiations had been taking place between the two sides, but pressure has been increased on the military controlled government to step down before New Year (15th ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » West » KaĆ“h Kong March 30th 2010

For the days around my twenty third birthday we decided to head further west from Chi Phat to the Koh Kong Conservation Corridor that stetches along the Thai border. We arrived in the capital of the area, Krong Koh Kong, expecting what Lonely Planet dubbed as 'a seedy border town' but found it to be a rather nice place. We had planned to go to a nearby island for my birthday but decided that it might be a little too deserted for any birthday celebrations. So we planned to stay and enjoy the waterfalls, mangrove forests and beaches nearby. The town had a scenic riverside/sea setting with a promenade lined with food stalls from where you could see across the long bridge to Thailand. We found Otto's guesthouse where 'you pay the least but sweat the ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Sihanoukville March 30th 2010

The southern seaside town of Sihanoukville was not what we expected. Named after Cambodia's former king, Sihanouk, it seemed to be more a town of people getting royally drunk. Bars, restaurants and tourists reigned supreme here, like coming back into Goa with every stretch of land being used. We had a hard time finding a room as most were full or overpiced but managed to get a bed at 'Cool Banana' guesthouse where after a ten hour journey from Kratie via Phnom Penh we were ready to dip in to some of the towns regal pursuits ourselves. The resort-like atmosphere was slightly disorientating having come from the peaceful town of Kratie. The disparity between normal Cambodia and beachside Sihanoukville was palpable not least because there were no Cambodians living there. Even the bars used English staff. ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » South » Phnom Penh March 30th 2010

After all the wonderful temple touring we continued our historical education of Cambodia in Phnom Penh, a mere six hours away by bus. We arrived as dusk fell and could see instantly that this was one busy city, the roads were chocker, people swarmed the streets and the nightly food markets were out in force. This felt a more real Cambodia, more than a tourist hub like Siem Reap had been. After checking into the rather plain but pleasant Capitol guesthouse we got some street eats from the thriving stall outside our door. So far food (always from street stalls) in Cambodia had been more expensive than Thailand and although it was cheaper in the capital city it was still proportionately higher priced. Nonetheless after my noodles I was in need of some dessert and spotted ... read more

Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor March 25th 2010

Another month and another country. Cambodia was in our sights on the six hour journey from Bangkok to the border. Once there we were greeted by a whole host of scam artists. "come with me for visa", "you have to have visa before you go passport control". This although not entirely wrong was a scam as they were charging about $5 more for a visa than at the actual checkpoint. The problem was that there was no signs explaining this so we just had to stay strong and push our way through to the correct visa point. Relieved to be through we then had to find a bus to Siem Reap which is a further three hours from the border. All tourists coming through were met by smartly dressed 'government officials' who supposedly were there to ... read more

Asia » Thailand » Central Thailand » Bangkok March 16th 2010

Having heard from so many people, especially Lewi, about what a vibrant, fun city Bangkok is I was excited to finally be making the pilgrimage there myself. We arrived into the southern bus terminal and took an air con bus (what luxury) to the backpackers mecca of Khao San Rd. It was a crazy sight. The cobbled street itself was narrower than I had expected and was lined with restaurants, souvenier shops, photographers, guesthouses and quite a few large fancy hotels (didn't expect those either). In front of these taking up all the pavement and half the street were all the stalls selling jewellery, clothes, fruit, pad thai, spring rolls, sunglasses and second hand books. Then in the middle of the road were all the people, two weekers, long term hippies, hawkers for pingpong shows or ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Surat Thani March 16th 2010

Having enjoyed our time in the serene jungle setting of Khao Sok it was now that time of month for a party. The party happened to be none other than the infamous Koh Pha Ngan Full Moon Party (FMP) on Haad Rin beach. Due to very high accommodation prices on the island around party time, we decided to do an all-nighter and just not sleep. So having reached Surat Thani (our base for Koh Pha Ngan ferries) we left around lunchtime equipped with nothing more than some suncream and UV face paint. No camera, bag or any belongings as that would just be asking for trouble. Due to unforeseen journey times we didn't reach the party island until sunset but that was perfect as the party was just getting started. On the long ferry crossing we ... read more
