Indian Trains. We love them. In our time here we have taken short hops in A/C chair class, slept (on the whole very well) on the sleepers and squeezed and shoved our way in to stand in the general seating section. We had yet another different experience on the Margao-Hospet train. On the morning of departure we had no ticket, and so queuing for a standard seat was the only option. Evidently one of the most popular routes in India there were already people hanging out the doors when the train pulled in. So when the empty luggage carriage stopped in front of us we hopped in. It was very spacious, if a little hard on the old posterior. We waved goodbye to a bemused Durks, and 8 long hours later we arrived in Hampi. It was ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Vagator January 2nd 2010

There is a lot of talk from travellers about Goa. We had heard both good and bad things ranging from cheap beer and big parties to overpriced accommodation and government restrictions on bar opening hours. All of which we found to be true. It was a short two hour train journey from gokarna on which I lost my hat. We were the last to get onto our carriage and subsequently stood by the open door. I took up the very Indian trait of hanging out of the door as we chugged along but forgot I had my hat on. As I lifted my head slightly to catch the cooling breeze off it flew, just like that, much to the amusement of those that witnessed it. We were headed for vagator, in the north of goa, which ... read more

We were looking forward to getting to Om beach having heard such good things about it. The 600km journey to get there, as always in India, took a little longer than expected... First there was a train and stopover in Mangalore. A pleasant relaxed city, with good food, and a good medical system as it turned out. On the morning of our departure I took a reluctant Lewi down to the hospital. I felt that after the previous evenings discomfort he ought to have his ear checked out. Forms were filled, and patiently we waited along with 40 others in a partly constructed waiting room. Only 45mins later the doctor called us through. After a brief consultation he selected a hooked implement and, with a wince from Lew, pulled out the biggest clump of wax I ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Kannur January 2nd 2010

The small seaside town of Kannur, in the north of Kerala, was a bus and a long train journey from Allepey. The 6 hour journey cost only 20 rupees (30 pence). A staggeringly low fare considering a short bus ride into town would cost 5x that amount in England. A ticket however, doesn't guarantee you a seat and as the train pulled in we had to jostle with hordes of people to secure a place. Much the same as a train from Paddington station on a Friday night really but a lot hotter. We hadn't envisaged having any problems finding a room in Kannur town. But an hour after our train arrived at 11pm we were still trudging around the dark, dog infested streets trying to find a hotel that wasn't full. After finding literally the ... read more

It was time to leave the beautiful Andamans behind and board our flight back to the mainland. We had quickly become fans of the languid island lifestyle and were reluctant to return to the frantic pace of the mainland. But the time had come and we were headed for Chennai. It was a hot and hectic morning and after checking our bags into the station luggage room we stumbled out into the city and into an Egyptian styled bar. It was swanky and we had a couple of hours to kill before our sleeper train to Kochi so we dove in and were amazed at the choices...and the price, such an increase from Little Andaman! We had a strawberry and mint flavoured hookah pipe and a watermelon cooler. This was a popular place filled with Chennai's ... read more

Asia » India » Andaman & Nicobar Islands » Port Blair December 29th 2009

In order to get to Little Andaman we had to catch a ferry back to Port Blair, stay an evening, before a 6am departure for Hut Bay. It was a long, but enjoyable 6 hour journey with our new friends Joni and Uni. Amazingly the long journey to Little Andaman only cost 25 rupees each compared to 250 rupees to Havelock. This, perhaps, was the first sign that we were coming to a wilder, less tourist frequented island. We were again greeted by hordes of rickshaw drivers vying for our business but this time the path wasn’t so clear, we didn’t really know where we wanted to go. Joni had been to the island about five years ago and had spoken of a few beach huts by Butler Bay beach. We asked to go there but ... read more

Asia » India » Andaman & Nicobar Islands » Havelock Island December 27th 2009

The journey to the beautiful Andaman Islands was an interesting one to say the least. A jeep with no clutch, a train with cockroaches to touch and a night in Kolkata where you sweat too much. But we made it to Port Blair, getting off the plane with a sigh of relief and excitement at the island adventure that awaited us. The Andaman Islands that sit 1000km east of mainland India were not originally on our itinerary, but who needs itineraries when you’re in India. Since landing in Delhi people had told us of the little secret that is these deserted islands and after being in the cold Nepali mountains we decided to find some cheap flights and go there, which subsequently enabled us to see Darjeeling. The even colder Darjeeling left us yearning for sun ... read more

Asia » India » West Bengal » Darjeeling December 14th 2009

After a mammoth 24 hour journey of bumps and little sleep on bus and then jeep we arrived in the beautiful hill station of Darjeeling. The windy, slow ascent meant we were going to stay here for a while whether we liked it or not. Sitting at 2000m above sea level its hillside remoteness and mountainous beauty was a heady combination and a nice continuation from Nepal. Our Hotel was, predictably, at the top of the town and even our previous trekking experience didn’t help much as we lugged our heavy backpacks up. It was all worth it though as Hotel Aliment was a great spot with a big library, friendly owner and great views. Darjeeling was an India we hadn’t experienced yet. It was relaxed, the people weren’t out to get your money and it ... read more

On from Pokhara. Durks had departed to go to Mumbai to begin his teaching course, and after spending a few more days in Pokhara planning our forward travel and eating dinner with our rafting buddies we took a 8 hr bus journey to Kathmandu. The driver of this bus was a maniac and we breathed a sigh of relief when we were able to disembark. We decided to go to "Freak Street" an old hippy hangout right next to Durbar Square as opposed to the more touristy Thamel Area. But our late arrival into town meant we had some difficulty finding a room, and eventually settled for a good priced but very damp and dank smelly room. I think this brought on Lewi's hayfever which was pretty terrible, using rolls and rolls of toilet roll for ... read more

Asia December 12th 2009

Day 1- Due to Durks tight schedule we had arranged to go straight from Nayapul to begin our 3 day rafting trip. The sight of roads was very strange to us having been in the mountains for a while, but we soon got used to them as we sat by the dusty track for an hour and a half to wait for the rather late bus! On the 2 hour journey to the start point we met our group and a few people naturally stood out as people we would get along with. There was a very brief briefing when we arrived about the safety rules and helmets and lifejackets, which looked in reassuringly good condition, were given out. More importantly the guides prepared a feast for lunch and once all the plates had been washed ... read more
