It should not be called the Great War, but the Horrible War, as are they all. This tribute was well done; bravo, David. We have been thinking what to do to commemorate Christmas in the trenches during the upcoming holidays. I have visited Verdun and the battlefields of northern France (as well as the sequel sites, in Normandy etc). They are sobering. Let's do what we can -- vote, and write, and sing, and... travel to make friends everywhere, stretching the world!

Lest We Forget
Hi David & Janice, My husband and I have not long returned from Amiens in northern France where we toured many of the battlefields of the Somme and Belgium. Reading your blog and looking at your photos of places that we also visited, brings back many memories that are still very fresh in our minds of our experiences there back in June this year. I doubt that anyone could visit this region and not be moved by what they see and find there. Hundreds of cemeteries all throughout - from the very small, in someone's barley or potato field, with just a handful of headstones, to thousands of them, stretching away into the distance. Many of the slain just buried where they fell. No matter their size, all are beautifully kept and maintained. It just breaks your heart. The total futility of war. But, like Gallipoli that we also visited late last year, today, there is a serene peace that envelops these last resting places of so many. Lest We forget ... Jan

Scotland
Dave and I love Scotland. He had wanted to go there for years and it was not on the top of my list. Once we went I was hooked. What a wonderful country. We'd love to go back. Dave played St. Andrews and had a great time.

Searching for spectacular views
I held my breath as you went around those hairpin curves along narrow mountain roads. Cyclists are always amazing....I loved the decorated cows. Stunning views around every corner.

I don't like heights
Wow, For someone who doesn't like heights I can only imagine what it was like to go round those hairpin bends. I'll settle for seeing the photos when you're back and we can enjoy the gentle hills at Thetford GC. Incidentally, I've had lessons from Stuart Smith for a few years now. What I like about him is that he demonstrates what he teaches. He has a message for you when you next see him. Enjoy the break. You're not missing much here as you may know. Rain, floods, more rain and now gale force winds. Even our fishing lake is closed because of floods! It's unsafe. Can't see where the lake edge is. Keep smiling you two. Cheers, John
