15 January 2010 Today was one of our slow days making the majority of it less than interesting to read about. Truthfully, I think that we were enjoying the homeliness of Jeff’s pad which (together with Chris’) made such a delightful change to the various low rent accommodations that we have slept in over the last five months that we felt no real need for entertainment over and above that which it provided. Jeff lives a ten minute walk from the beach and Gregg was keen to get his board out so, sometime in the afternoon, decided to take Angus (Jeff’s dog) out for a walk in order to give him some exercise and also to check on the surf. A little later he disappeared out of the front door, board in hand, saying I ... read more

Writing this blog almost a week after the events, reminds me that we really shouldn't let things get so far behind as Lou and I have just had to both check the photos and discuss what we did to make sure we have the right days. 13 January 2011 Today after a lazy morning, we decided that we must get out of the house and explore the area a bit further on foot. So we left Jeff's place and, as we stepped outside and crossed the road, we walked around the Coomaditchy Lagoon, which I believe is a piece of protected Aboriginal land, there is unsurprisingly lagoon which has a large collection of pelicans living upon it and its little island. After walking past this and going over the crest of the hill, the vista of ... read more

11 January 2011 You cannot have lived through today anywhere near a TV or radio without having noticed that, this morning, something big started to happen in Brisbane. Last night as we were looking at the coverage of events in Toowoomba, conversation drifted towards how, or if, the flooding up stream was likely to impact on Brisbane. Chris thought it unlikely that we would end up stranded in Brisbane but said that he thought that if would be interesting to see how the damn built after the 1974 floods would be utilised/cope under the pressure of the waters further upstream. In truth, I wasn't really taking much notice as it was impossible to imagine that the scenes that we were watching online could possibly arrive in a suburb near us and, in any event, we ... read more

9th January 2011 The British, it is known worldwide, are obsessed with the weather. My wife the geographer tells me that this is mainly due to the convergence of five different air masses right above the British Isles. This in turn leads to highly variable weather. One minute it is stormy, the next it is sunny; it can be still, then blowing a gale; it can be nice and warm even hot then cold; you could even say that we can have four seasons in one day. It’s strange that an antipodean band could write about this given that it couldn’t be further from the truth down here on this big continent sized island. This may be the reason that even now when the weather is the main subject on the news, trying to find ... read more

7 January 2011 Having lasted much longer last evening than either of us anticipated, we were awoken by our alarm this morning after nearly 12 hours welcome sleep. Not wanting to break from tradition, we engaged in a leisurely morning routine whilst consulting the local bus timetable and eventually made it out of the front door. The sun was making an effort at poking through the clouds as we wondered towards Greenslopes Bus Terminus. I was expecting to emerge into a shabby bus station akin to both those reminiscent of both the UK and across Asia but this was something entirely dfferent. We were greeted with a bus station in the style of a very clean train station, complete with overpass. Not only was the station spotless but, the dual carriageway that it straddles was ... read more

5th January 2011 Why is it we struggle to get up so often, and then when you really need to wake up for something important, you awake literally minutes before the alarm that you set? Our internal clocks really are amazingly accurate things when they want to be! I awoke at 4:57am, and waited until the 5am alarm beeped then got up, and put the kettle on and got in the shower. Not only is this the earliest morning I can remember but the easiest to arise also, why is that? Anyway, morning ablutions taken care of, dressed and a cup of ginger tea down our throats and into the taxi for the twenty minute ride (at this time of day, more like an hour and a half at rush hour) to Ngurai Rai Airport. ... read more

The Pink View We have spent the last 5 days on and off wondering whether Bali needs rounding up. In many ways it doesn't - we didn't actually see that much after all. For all of that, there is much to be said of Bali but I just don't quite know where to start. Gregg and I agree, I think, that much of our time in Bali falls into the stag category - 'what happens on the stag, stays on the stag' but not because we spent a month in alcoholic oblivion. Quite the opposite. Our memory of those thirty days puts us next door to paradise and round the corner from Eden. Sure, as with every other South-East Asian Country that we have visited, there were annoyances, cultural misunderstandings and copious amounts of bottled ... read more

3 January 2010 Today is our penultimate day in Bali and we are both starting to feel somewhat sad. The Christmas decorations have found their way into the bin and we have already started packing. Mr & Mrs P never usually pack ahead of time - what is happening to us? The day started with yoga…well, it was supposed to and we were awake but just didn’t quite make the transition from bed to yoga studio in time for a class. The fortunate thing about taking classes at a yoga studio is that there is always a different class to attend if you miss one so we decided that we would go to a 4pm class and run a few last minute errands in the meantime whilst we still had the bike available to us ... read more

New Years Day 2011 After a brilliant night last night, we both slept in until nine without and problem, arising in time to go to our morning Yoga class. There were no hangovers in sight, but that didn’t stop the Balinese continuing the party with further fireworks as we arrived a Desa Seni (as Lou has all ready told you) however I did start to wonder if they had indeed stopped at all, or if we just slept through them all night as they continued? One of the mysteries that will never be solved I suppose, like the tree falling over in the woods. Anyway we both felt rather virtuous being one of only a few to make it to the 10:15am morning Yoga, the first session of the New Year. The class was not ... read more

30 December 2011 With Gregg improved and available for entertainment, life is getting back to normal - whatever that may be. Unfortunately, and again, we managed to sleep through the morning yoga class. I like to think that we are taking the opportunity to go wherever the wind blows and that, today, it wasn’t blowing in the direction of Desa Seni. Just to clarify, this is quite different from laziness. Since neither of us took the opportunity to celebrate Gregg’s birthday by raising a glass, there was a definite absence of hangovers this morning but there was rain. More rain. Grey skies and rain. Quite contrary to expectation, I can say with a confidence that we will be leaving Bali with paler skin than we were sporting upon our arrival. Since we aren’t here to ... read more
