10 December 2010 Ubud was not going to become our base (in truth, it never was, but we did think that we might stay there a few days whilst the surf was lacking and Gregg would want to be closer to the coast) and we therefore needed to make a plan. After a bad night’s sleep last night neither of us wanted to spend another night in the same hotel and I had seriously had enough of Kuta. There are many beautiful parts of Bali and Kuta is not one of them. It is busy and dirty, but on the upside, it is generally easy to find what you need as there are shops a plenty. It is now even more developed than it was when we were last here (warungs have been replaced by ... read more

8th December 2010 We awoke at about 9am which wasn’t too bad considering the late night that we had. We were both a little dry of mouth from the drinks the night before but it was a beautiful Bali morning and we had things to do. We headed out into the heat and blazing sun, without a thought for anything but breakfast, which we located a little way up the main street to the North. A “farmer’s breakfast” for each of us (the re-fried boiled potatoes with bacon and eggs mixed in brekkie I had had in Langkawi). That done, we both felt a little more human and were really glad to note we had arrived in yet another place where there was a ceremony taking place that meant half the place was shut. We ... read more

Many things about these two days were great but they are also two days where quite a few things went wrong. 6 December 2010 Today is our last full day in Singapore as tomorrow afternoon we fly to Bali. The plan was to visit the Botanic Gardens and the Orchid Gardens and to visit the harbour. If we had time, we might pop over to Sentosa island as there is a flowrider (surf) machine that Gregg would have rather liked to have a look at. We didn’t set an alarm, deciding that we deserve to let our bodies and the sun, rather than electronics, tell us when it was time to rise. Our room has a very narrow window that runs almost from floor to ceiling and, in the absence of a curtain, we were gently ... read more

4th December 2010 Another day another country/island/city or in today’s case all three as we head to Singapore. We arose at a reasonable time for a moving day, only getting out of bed at about 8 ish, for a shower and the final pieces of packing. Our last breakfast at café 1511, mee goreng for me, and French toast for Lou. A short walk to the bus stop at the end of the road and we were off to the long distance bus station that we had arrived at a few days earlier. On the bus we got talking to a Dutch couple, who had been in Singapore and were heading to KL (like many we meet, going in the opposite direction to us!) They put us to shame when we discovered that they speak ... read more

The pink view I had no preconceptions of Malaysia. Since this was the 6th stop on our trip and we didn't know how long it would take us to get there, I hadn't given it much thought before we arrived other than absently mindedly flicking through the guidebook that we bought in Bangkok from time to time. It is a beautiful country and one which provides many contrasting destinations for the traveller. We risked a visit to the East cost (it is Monsoon season there) but only really heard rain during the night. We were, I think, very lucky. The coastal destinations are chilled out places where as the towns and cities, and Kuala Lumpur in particular, are modern pacey places which are miraculously easy to navigate. Malaysia is, undoubtedly, easy to travel in independently. ... read more

Two days in the life of the traveller can a) be a very long time indeed and b) bring about remarkable change. 2 Dec 2010 We have now both settled in to Melaka. It is fair to say that I am somewhat more taken with it than Gregg which is in no small part due to the homeliness of Café 1511’s guest accommodation. It is just unbelievably peaceful here. There is a water feature in the middle of the building and the staff always stop to say hello and give us a smile. The room that we are staying in is small but spotless and well furnished and the shared bathrooms, although a walk down the corridor away, are also beautiful and immaculate. We had planned to have a bit of a lie in this morning ... read more

30th November 2010 After a couple of lazy mornings getting up early to make our bus was not pleasant. The alarm sounded at 6:30am and although I got up swiftly and got in the shower, I can’t say that I was particularly fond of that alarm! Lou did pretty well considering how bad she is in the morning, and as we had done the packing bar the minimum washing essential items the night before things moved swiftly. We had planned a schedule to leave the hut by 7:00 and checking the watch as we walked away we were bang on target, a minor miracle it has to be said. The short walk in the early morning light to the bus stop was uneventful, and very peaceful - I for one was slightly sorry to be ... read more

28 November 2010 After four nights in KL sleeping in a very nice room but one that lacks windows, it was time to move on. Where the day was to take us was a complete mystery to me since I yesterday I left Gregg to do all of the deciding. I had heard the words ‘east coast’ and ‘surf’ and assessed that I was not suitably qualified to participate in this particular decision making process. Initially, the plan had been to find our way to the east coast and then take a boat to Tioman, however during the rainy season the boats are often suspended and we were worried that it we made it there we might end up marooned. Gregg also discovered that this is ‘the’ island to visit on the east coast and ... read more

26th November 2010 Our first full day in Kuala Lumpur, so we got up and headed, as I’m sure many tourists do, for the Petronas twin towers. Having been the night before and the “we are full” sign not being displayed but tucked behind another sign we had decided we wouldn’t rush but instead go when we got up. We also had to post yet more stuff home (it seems a never ending task - yet we don’t seem to have anything less?). We got to the mall under the towers and located the post office, which wasn’t hard. The friendly guard armed with a pump action shotgun pointed us to the counter for parcels, we queued and when we were seen we were told that they don’t have packaging materials. (Surely fairly fundamental for ... read more

24 November 2010 As you will have gathered from Gregg’s previous blog, we now know that he does not cope in a fan only room particularly well. I lost count of the number of times he got up in the night last night and was actually rather pleased when the alarm went of f at 6.30am. Slightly less pleased that I was wasn’t woken by our alarm but by the inconsiderate occupants of the room next door shortly beforehand but, hey ho, that’s life I suppose. The walls of this hostel were thin but the management had put signs on the walls asking occupants to be considerate of others…some of us were and it wasn’t actually that difficult to whisper to each other rather than bellow. Moving on, we rushed through cold showers, packed the ... read more
